I'm still confused as to why the foul on Bash had to be reviewed for about 5 mins with about 46 camera angles, making lundstrum hang around for what seemed like ages. It only needed one look at a replay. Not content with all that fuckin about the ref then spent a few more seconds making sure everyone was outside the box, even though they already were. cheers ref, twat.

Just looked it up and it says intentionally denying a scoring oppurtunity and arguably Targetts wasn't and Egans was

So handling on the line is a yellow?

It's no longer a red if it's considered a genuine attempt to play the ball. So handling it on the line is still a red as is pulling a player down but going for the ball and catching the man is a yellow. Been this way for two or three seasons now.

Isn't it supposed to be a "clear" goalscoring opportunity? Yes, it could have resulted in a goal but he was 30 yards out, at an angle and the keeper was rushing out to meet the ball.

Can you imagine if Harry McGuire or Virgil van Dijk had done the same thing? Would it have been a straight red?

In what way was the defender trying to play the ball though? He trips Bash and gets nowhere near the ball. The main problem I have with VAR is the lack of consistency.

Never heard of this double jeopardy utter bollocks in regards to football only in not being able to be tried for the same murder twice.
But if you can't get sent off for denying a clear goal scoring opportunity in the box then you might as well roundhouse the attacker in the face😕

It's still a red card if there's deemed to be no attempt to play the ball. And obviously a roundhouse would be a red for violent conduct anyway. Or to use an example from a few posts up, deliberately handling the ball on the line would be a red.

Looked like he was going for the ball. Feel free to disagree, I'm just saying what the rules are.

The crime here is there was no attempt to play the ball. Bash was yards away, there was no possible way he could've got to the ball from the position he was in. If Scott's interpretation is backed up by his superiors they should just get rid of the rule or at least the "attempt to play the ball" aspect. If this instance is a "deliberate attempt to play the ball" then every challenge in the box is - make it unambiguous.

So what is Egan actually meant to do?
Just stand off and say "Go on right ahead"?

What is the point in having defenders if you aren't even allowed to make any contact?

I'd understand if he hacked him or if Watkins went down. But Watkins was just as guilty with the shirt pulling... where was his card? By the way if it was the other way round id still say the same thing.

I am getting really REALLY annoyed now with the rules of football in general. It just ain't fun anymore. So many inconsistencies between refs interpretations of the rules. The ref has basically given advantage to the other team when there was no malice involved. It's a bullshit rule, had the ref let play continue at least for a few seconds you could see Ramsdale coming out and gave them BOTH a yellow card for the shirt pulling. It's a 50/50 ball and let's be honest he wasn't near the goal. Why can't refs just use 'common sense' and talk to them like normal human beings!? This includes our last visit with the ghost goal.

I'm still confused as to why Lundstram took the penalty! 🤔

Whatever his decision, it was sheer arrogance to run up and brandish the red card like a victorious matador?

He’d only seen the incident from thirty yards away from behind, but despite having access to the pitch side monitor and numerous camera angles, he decided that view was all he needed.

I miss the days when a good referee was anonymous, their interfering and rule tinkering is slowly killing the game

No a defender has to use his brain don't go skin tight with one of there quicker players on the halfway line in that instance drop five yards deeper let him come with you be aware of the danger when he comes with you step up and catch him offside

Given the double jeopardy rule, do you suppose it would have been better for Egan to wait until in the the box to foul him?

Also, what about a potential rule change in that, given the same situation, you could opt to keep Egan on the pitch but at the cost of a penalty. i.e. for denying a goal scoring opportunity when outside the box.

The timing is the important thing.

If it's early in the game, the attacking side would probably prefer the defender to be sent off. If it's the 93rd minute, they'd prefer a penalty. So maybe the attacking team should get the choice (that would make things interesting!).

I thought it would be a red card at the time and it was no surprise at all, the only thing I was waiting to see was whether they'd call Watkins offside - which he wasn't.

On balance you can say it may have been six-of-one-and-half-a-dozen-of-another but there are different opinions about most incidents and in reality it was, not for the first time, an exposure of our defence's achilles heel, a long ball over the top down the middle. Playing a high line has its benefits but with that you have to accept we will get caught out.

When we do it's crackers to put yourself in a position where your challenge can be interpreted as a last-man foul, far better to let things run their course and I hope they learn from that this time.

I see nothing wrong with the rule which is there for a good reason, and the decision was reviewed anyway. I was much more annoyed about the length of time it took to confirm the penalty which directly disadvantages the side taking it.

Watkins is wrestling Egan as much as the other way and Target was nowhere near the ball so double jeopardy shouldn’t come into it

It looked to me like he hadn`t a clue Basham was there, and that actually he was expecting to shepherd it out/back to the keeper.

He wasn`t attempting to play the ball at all - its a nailed on red card.

We are certainly not (and haven`t been for a long time) getting the rub of the green from VAR/refs. You'd think it has to turnaround at some point - but by that time we may be in trouble at the bottom of the table.

As far as I was aware, if there's no genuine attempt to play the ball, then the double jeopardy rule doesn't apply.

It didn't look like Targett had any intention to play the ball...but it also just looked a bit clumsy rather than and attempt to bring the man down.

I dunno, 6 of one and half a dozen of the other I guess.
