Surely Holdsworth. He had a real hot streak one season - the one away at Swindon was a bullet diving header.

About 2.50 here:

Scored at both ends that day

I remember Pembo scored a flying header at the Lane end v Manchester City on? Good Friday? 1993.

I reminded Thompson about the Norwich own goal when he made some boring attempt to sledge me as I took guard at the crease. Soon shut him up

And the best OG ? ... any older Blades remember Reading away 82-83, Jeff King 25 yard screamer by all accounts?
Was there. Night game if I remember rightly. Sat on side stand and couldn’t believe what I was seeing!!! Just belted in from outside the box.

9 months have passed, but the quest to determine our record goalscorer has always been in the back of my mind...and I've done more work on it. I'm sure all are thrilled.

To recap, the clubhouse leader for 1982-3 to 1998-99 was Brian Gayle, with 4 OGs. Here's the 12 seasons after that, league only:

1999-2000
Rob Kozluk v Birmingham H, L1-2

2000-01
No own goals scored by Blades players

2001-02
Again, no own goals scored by Blades players

2002-03
Rob Ullathorne v Wolves A, W3-1

Robert Page also scored an own goal in the playoffs v Forest, of course

2003-04
No own goals scored by Blades players

2004-05
Leigh Bromby v Gillingham A, W3-1
Paul Thirlwell v Crewe A, W3-2

John Harley scored an OG when we beat Stockport 4-1 in the league cup

2005-06
Chris Morgan v Norwich H, L1-3
Chris Morgan v QPR H, L2-3

2006-07
Phil Jagielka v Arsenal A, L0-3
Rob Kozluk re Portsmouth A, L1-3

2007-08
James Beattie v Stoke H, L0-3
Chris Armstrong v Colchester A, D2-2

Plus Boro's winner in the FA Cup 5th round replay was an own goal by Paddy Kenny

2008-09
Matt Kilgallon v Derby A, L1-2
Chris Morgan v Birmingham H, W2-1

2009-10
Chris Morgan v Newcastle H, L0-1

2010-11
Steve Simonsen v Bristol C H, W3-2

Chris Morgan's splendid run of form ties him with Gayle for most own goals in the period covered thus far. He already owns the all time record for most red cards so this is perhaps fitting.

A few notes:

1. My favourite of all these goals is Steve Simonsen's. I had forgotten how funny it was. Check it out on youtube if you've forgotten or never seen it.
2. Is James Beattie the most unlikely own goal scorer of all time? Deano got one at Sunderland in 1989-90 so he's perhaps his only rival.
3. I am impressed to see Paul Thirlwell on the list. He is possibly the least memorable player we've had this century who played a decent number of games (Steven McGinn is his only rival for me) so it is a comfort to know that he has a second tangible "achievement" to go with his goal v Wolves.
4. Morgan's goal v Newcastle was in the infamous game where Jordan Stewart played on the wing for a time in preference to David Cotterill, probably the worst positional decision since Dave Bassett tried Brian Smith in midfield at Boro in 1988.

2011-2 to date and 1970-71 to 1981-2 coming your way soon (or in about 9 months)

Excellent work!

The Steve Simonson OG summed up our season and that whole game was a car crash.

Steve Yates is missing off that list. He scored one v Leeds in the league cup when jags scored.

It's easy to forget quite how shit we were that season but those highlights bring it all flooding back. And that's a game we won! Puts the moaning at an automatic promotion side into perspective doesn't it.
