Reasons for optimism

Well, I don't envisage Adkins as having his hands on the club bank account pommpey

depends what you claim as having his hands on the club bank account - considering he has signed 3 players (and more than likely paid a kings randsom for Sharp when it would have been better spent on a Central defender.... and considering as I mentioned we are opperating at a loss... can you take money away from a zero....

Wasn't that the rationale behing the South Stand, the Copthorne, the Business 'wing'? To generate income and revenue? It seems like there's a whole sunny business enterprise called Shefffield United plc, and then there's something regarding football with those chimps out on the pitch and those moany dickheads out there in the stands.

I agree the rationale was exactly that... however when the uk (and European economy) took a severe nose dive these ventures actually turned out to be millstones which were then draining money from the club... (very few predicted the recession or the impact it was going to have globally) so hard to blame this on McCabe or the club, it did start making money to start with (with the usual ill informed fans failing to see the benefits as it looked like it was diverting money away from the first team) the sale of Staines Fitness club I believe brought a 7 figure profit which was split 50/50.... amongst a few smaller deals... prior to the recession.

Money talks. They are professional footballers, much of them out of a job with no contract or spondoolies or sponsorship deals..

in a way I agree money does talk... however so does the SCMP... (which is linked to revenue streams) lets say our Incomings are 8m 60% of this is allowable for wages... this gives you approx £92k per week to fund your entire squad... the majority of those who are in the premiership will be on in excess of £20k a week (and what do you think they will want to compensdate them for the embarressment of being in league 1) similar the mainstay of championship players will be on £10k+

the majority also believe their own hype and have agents telling them not to sign for peanuts as the big deal is just round the corner... they will have been paid handsomely whilst in said leagues to be able to "hang on" and be in no rush to sign to anyone.

I'm not talking about booting it long. I'm talking about getting the ball, being aggressive, feeding it to the wings or through midfield and attacking the opposition. The reason we played it sidways last season is that our options up front or even 'in' front were non existent. We had no 'runners' and no route forward and Cluff wanted the Blades to retain possession, itself not a bad idea but only when you are winning.

we were constantly feeding it to the wings... it was always going to Murphy/Flynn/JMC.... it was the lack of delivery into the box that was the problem, the fact was we were and still are too short and lightweight to "impose ourselves"and in the most too slow to react, so when we lost the ball in the middle the defence were put under enourmous pressure.. if we ever won it back we tippy tappied with it until the opposition had chance to reset....

although this hasnt much to do with McCabe.... and more the managers ability to get the players to do something (everyone blamed CLOUGH for not being able to do this.... however even ADKINS cant get them to do it... so maybe it was the players that were the problem....

Chesterfield will be a tough opposition on Saturday. Ebanks-Blake could be a shrewd signing in this division.

I know. If he stays off the treatment table he will be a fucking handful.

And if we play Collins and McEvely, we might as well just give the game to them

To get back on topic, there could actually be a silver lining. There seemed (before this game) to be a gulf in thinking between us fans and the powers that be. I think we (posters here) are all pretty much in agreement that we need a CB or two and a solid keeper, and had hoped this would be addressed by now? I haven't seen anybody here argue with this point, and this game could have aligned their thinking to ours (hopefully).

Which would have been worse? Grinding out a draw and maybe a deceptive win or two and then repeating last year, desperately trying to hang on to games, giving points up in the final minutes and slowly watching the season get pissed away gradually, or one big tonking at the start of the season to force through the changes that we all know need to be made? If this game gets us the signings we need to push on, maybe it's a good thing (in the wider context of a season)?

Possible scenario but if we didn't know we needed centre halves then we shouldn't really be a football club.

Start of the season has been like turning up at Ponds Forge for a swim without yer trunks.

Its been like turning up at an ass ramming contest without a cock

I totally agree - why on earth we weren't in for Kirkland, a quality, experienced goalkeeper ...
saw on twitter that Wigan havent been able to agree a deal to get him back, wondering if we could?
