Realistic Expectations For Next Season?

Top six finish and some decent entertaining football.

The spine of the squad needs improvement with an addition here or there in wide positions. We have something to build on so it shouldn't take much to get us up there. Not if the club has anything about itself.

What we should be looking for is recruiting the best players from L1 clubs - there are plenty around, probably some up and coming from L2 and use the loan market cleverly. Just throwing money at it is not the answer (it certainly hasn't worked for us in the last 5 seasons). The most important appointment is the manager. Get the right man and everything else will fall into place. He will recruit the right players and also, as importantly, get the best out of the players we have, something I certainly don't think NA did. Is CW the right man for the job? I hope so but he must be given at least 2 seasons.

Don't expect too much on the loan front, rules have changed and its season long loans now.

You're not making sense.

The manager appointments prove that McCabe is ambitious and always learnt a lesson.

Weir to Clough
The arguement was we needed someone who can build a dynasty and plan for the long term future.
Remember we'd decided we wanted to copy Swansea/ Southampton and play a passing style.
Someone with experience of managing a big club with expectation.
So we went for Clough who was a man of pronciple having long spells dealing a great job at Burton and a decent job at Derby. Derby had just sacked Clougn and we acted quickly.

Clough to Adkins
We learned the lesson from Wolves when they bought Jackett. Basically if you want promotion then bring in the best man with the best cv regardless of cost. Adkins cv was perfect, not only had he gained promotions from league 1 but he also gained promotion from the Championship with Southsmpton.
Adkins could have easily got a Championship job so it was impressive he come here.

Adkins to Wilder
We learned that Adkins couldn't get the best out of what he got at his disposal as he struggled to motivate the team. Maybe Adkins was in his way down so we need someone on their way up. It doesn't matter if they were in a job this time as well pay the compensation. The club also learned that manager/ fan relationship is so important. Both Cloug and Adkins never gelled with the fans so bringing in a passionate Blade should be a positive.
Again Wilder could easily get a Championship job so it's impressive he's come here.

If Wilder fails i suspect we might try to Sheff Wed route and go for an unknown foreign coach.

The board are learning and making (at the time) very good ambitious appointments.
But as I've said some of our fans use a back to front logic.

Eg we all accept that Guardiola is the best manager and Messi or Ronaldo are the best players.
If the board spent 200 million to bring in those 3 and we still failed to gain promotion then many if our fans would say that the board are terrible and need sacking.

However if we brought in Gary Megson as manager meaning fans boycotted the matches with gates down to 10K, we gave him no money and had all non league players but by some miracle we gained promotion then some of our fans would say "what a fantastic board" much better than the one when we failed with Guardiola/ Messi etc.

That's the nail on the head. Half our team didn't seem to want to play for Adkins, and hence for us.

If Adkins had 8 or 9 players lined up as Robbiez says , with his past recruitment policy , I am glad the blokes gone , and none have hopefully signed on the dotted line . Adkins has quite frankly been a walking disaster .

Never let the mists of time cloud how far Adkins has set us back. He offered absolutely nothing. Results, finishing position, tactics, entertainment, cup runs, optimism, recruitment, substitutions. Even his interviews would have sent a fucking glass eye to sleep. He was David Weir over a full season.

He wasn't allowed to.
He will leave 2 players behind, one of whom has just been made club captain.

To be fair to David Weir

1 . It was his first job as a manager

2. He has found his level as a good no 2 and coach at Rangers.

Adkins unfortunately for him and especially us , he his past his sell by date , and no excuse for him . Next club to employ him ( if there is one ) , beware .

We'll probably never know but he's got a decent track record with signings (pre-us). Probably better than any other manager we had in the last decade.
 



Adkins first signing was Woolford, a guy who was struggling in a relegation team. A player not blessed with any pace and the wrong age. A left side midfielder - one of Adkins old guard. That rang the odd alarm for me as I never rated him and we all knew the key positions were CB and centre mid. I saw his debut at Cheltenham where the team struggled to overcome a plucky non league side. He played left wing back and wasn't very dynamic. Took a lot of the set plays.

I think that shows what Adkins thought of the 3rd division. Low on his perception of quality, so if he plugged a few players of that ilk into the squad it would be all plain sailing.

He "assessed" the squad - over a long time and the key conclusion he made was to bestow the Captaincy on McEvely. WTF? Massive alarm bell there - granted McEv improved over the season but if anyone had looked at the previous campaign McEv would have been one of the first candidates for compost corner.

Significant to me that Wilder has already announced a change of Captain. Almost his first breath after saying "Hi" to the media. He's already got an understanding of who is pulling their weight and who really gives a fuck.

I can see that Wilder does not suffer fools gladly. He picks a team on merit and not former reputation. You have to work hard and be at the top of your game, consistently, if you want to be in his plans. With Adkins all you had to do was smile and buy into his philosophy and think you are a goose.

Now we all think that our squad is pretty useless. Well it's not so useless that it should have finished outside the top six - and that's down to the lack of direction and piss poor assessment right from the first league game of the season where we got dicked 4-0. Teams that go up don't lose by 4. Teams that get relegated regularly do. The timid acceptance of an opening day 4-0 drubbing without repercussions was yet another alarm bell. I'm damn sure Wilder will not accept that level of commitment never mind that level of performance.

My retalistic expectations are that we will make a challenge this year as the players will have no place to hide, no room for complacency, no scope to pull the wool over people's eyes. Adkins appears to think that players will get cerebrally engaged in his motivational fluff. Wilder knows that players are relatively simple beasts - they are a lot like a bunch of teenagers that need direction and guidance. They don't really grow up in that world. You set their boundaries and make sure they know what is expected and don't let them get into a comfort zone. It's not treating them like kids (although many act like they are) it's just setting standards of behaviour and discipline so that everyone pulls together, as a team, so the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. I never got the impression that Adkins got anywhere near that - yet you could see it clearly in the opposition we played.

Wilder will instill that ethos in the squad, whoever is left and whoever he brings in. He will bring unity to it - not spout waffle and talk about it, since talk is cheap. That is why I believe that we are in for an infinitely better season than just gone. I am impressed with the lack of fluff surrounding Wilder. I admire the clarity with which he conducts himself and the authority he carries, naturally. His whole demeanour is one of leadership. He will get us promoted.


And I believe he will do it at the first time of asking.
 
Those criticising Adkins for his signings must fucking hate Clough.

In a squad packed with Clough's signings, we've got one player who could play at a higher level - Billy Sharp.

In over 4 decades, only Robson compares to Clough in such abysmal failure in the transfer market. We will continue to pay the price until the likes of Coutts move onto Shrewsbury.

We can only hope Wilder's interviews earn him enough respect to see off the reactionary masses.

Realistic expectations for next season are to challenge for promotion. We don't have a divine right to get it and there's a lot of rebuilding to be done, but a club with our resources failing to even compete is unacceptable. Even with the melodramatic slating of the players by many this season as talentless no-hopers, they weren't that far off the play-offs, if Adkins had ever got the best out of the players then he probably wouldn't have got sacked.
 
My realistic expectations? Promotion. If we really are going to rely on a fair number of the u21's then I have no idea where we'll actually finish mind.

Lets hope there's a few more ooohs and aaahs than we had this year eh. :rolleyes:
 
Genuinely I think top 6 & keeping our 33? Yr run of being In 3rd round of the fa cup is bare minimum.

But I would be happy with with 3rd/4th, to give us home advantage in the Semi Final & trip to Wembley in playoffs. Hopefully a 2nd trip with a JPT final. because automatic promotion will be tough Just look at Wigan may have been champions but at Christmas they were mid table like us

If we have 3 or 4 of the youngsters I've seen coming through, then anything other than relegation would be a bonus.

Top 6 I hope - This is still essentially a squad that managed top 6 last year.

MK dons will walk the league but Charlton and Bolton have issues so it shouldn't be too much stronger.

What we need to some good signings tho and a level of improvement from the players who regressed last year. So many of them are capable of more.

Wilder has no money apart from what he manages to generate from sales.

MK will not walk the league
They have lost Alli and Grigg
Baker is a spent force.
They have peaked and are on the way down. They will do well but will not run away with anything. I expect them to challenge the play offs but nothing more.

Wilder will add to the squad with decent, hungry players who will work their bollocks off. They will not be journeymen dropping down the leagues to get a final pay day and swan about like twats.
Those that are here will have to pull their fingers out or face training with the stiffs. Wilder will not suffer any fools. He will root out any bad apples and fuck them off. He will recognise the talent on merit and not pick on reputation alone. Those on the fringes that demonstrate their keen attitude and application will thrive in the new regime and do well. Those that want to piss about and saunter around will get a very rude awakening. We will begin to see our Blades side put in as much, if. It more, effort than the opposition. Something that has been lacking (unexcusable) this season.

When Wilder smiles in interviews it will be genuine pleasure about the performance of the team - not some inane grin or some supercilious reaction to some mildly difficult question from a soft RS reporter trying to look as though they are being a serious journalist.
 



Realistic expectations?

Erm, another season of being Sheffield United.

Could either be another Weir-esque start to the season and Wilder sacked before bonfire night or losing the play off final to a 123rd minute goal off Ched Evans' arse after he controversially signed for MK Dons.

Either way I predict more pain, frustration and misery.
