Realigning Expectations

My question is what' are our long term expectations for the club? Are we happy to be just a championship club ? If the board don't have the wherewithal to invest now will they ever ? The Prince was brought in to provide the extra finance and we were led.to believe that would be forthcoming in the Championship. We know McCabe csnt put any more in and we also know he won't sell the club. So how do we push on ?

In Wilder we trust but even he will only take us so far on limited funds ( one of the lowest budgets in the league according to a number of comments). It's been a great season so far and importantly we have tied important players down with long term contracts but that extra quality we need may not be affordable under the current regime.

A good starting point for us is to stop pretending there's millions to spend or we're"in profit" by millions. Owners investment is where any transfer monies will come from.

Well done as usual for bringing a load down from a cloud of expectation and entitlement.

You do realise there will be mass suicide now? ;)

I think the problem here is, we have started to well and now having a small blip (which may continue). Due to that there’s a sense of disappointment and a view we need to spend money and bring players in.

I wonder if we were sat mid table not looking down but not really amongst the top 6 whether there would be the same demands. The worst thing for any football club these days is to overachieve, nothing good ever comes from it and it shouldn’t be that way. Managers get culled because they raised expectations and then couldn’t replicate it the year after. It’s madness at times.

I don’t want us to sit still and be happy with being a championship club. But equally I don’t expect in our first season back for so long that we should be uprooting and tearing apart the league. We have the best manager in years with a squad that works hard and give everything...let’s enjoy the ride and see where it takes us and not heap pressure and expectation on them.

I’m still very confident of top 6.
Apart from Fulham and possibly Brentford and Wolves not seen any impressive teams this season.
Baldock returning as right wing back with Basham returning to central defence will see a big improvement.

Since we were relegated to League 1 in 2011 eighteen clubs have been promoted to the championship.

Obviously one of those is us.

Of the other seventeen only four are currently above us.

Huddersfield who were promoted in 2012

Bournemouth who were promoted in 2013

Wolves who were promoted in 2014

and Bristol City who were promoted in 2015.

Wigan, Burton and Barnsley who were promoted in 2016 and Milwall and Bolton who were promoted with us in 2017 are all below us.

It seems to me that we are punching well above our weight at the moment when compared to the historical record of clubs promoted to the Championship and indeed of those 17 other clubs Charlton, Doncaster Rovers, Yeovil Town, Rotherham United, Franchise FC and Wigan Athletic have suffered one or more relegations.

If we achieve a mid table or better finish to this season we will have significantly beaten the odds and laid a good platform for further development.

Yes we have the odd disappointment but I for one am delighted with where we're at as a club, and as a team, at the moment.

I think Somewhere between 5th and 8th is where we will end up, and is realistic, which will be a fantastic position for us after the dross we have suffered prior to the 16/17 season.

Top 2 dreamers come down to earth now or be prepared for 5 months of disappointment.

Well that certainly made Bert laugh.
You getting privileged information right from the top.
Things do find their way from the top to the Civvy Street minions you know.

Doesn't need to be from the top. If someone is of the opinion we'll be spending £10m+ in January, Cap'n Blade could have told them it wasn't happening.

Push this spend spend spend agenda and when it doesn't happen say how right you were.

Pinchy come and sort this Welsh hoofer out.
Make The Long Ball Work You

I don't need to realign anything. When I look at the table I count the points we are off the top, not from a relegation spot. That's all that I wanted from our first season back. I understand that Wilder is going to drive for more, but I'm not going to do anything more than shrug when we lose a game and I'm not going to go on a morphine drip when the board doesn't break the bank in January. This is the best time for us in years and years. I'm just enjoying it*.

* apart from being a little pissed off that I can't get to the games.

To be honest I've been more Interested in how far off seventh place we are than first all season
Think we are still 5 points off seventh now after our bad run

If we can achieve top 6 that's a phenomenal achievement for a club with our paltry budget

I dont think anything needs "re-aligning". As a supporter I expect us to go for the win in every game we play, and I am sure CW puts the team out to do just that. We have achieved a wonderful start to the season, we are in a strong position and a play-off place is still a very realistic possibility. As for us the fans, our roll is to back the team on the pitch, after seasons of shite we now have a team to be proud of.

The realigning of expectations needs to be about the January Transfer Window. Big spending in January normally is about panic over relegation, or occasionally, higher up the league table, it is absurdly optimistic. Good proven players are generally not for sale, so you have the choice of lower league players (need time to adjust), Premier has- beens, kids, or returning from injury (risky), or with a lot of luck, a good player from our league from a club in financial difficulties. You re-shape the squad in summer, January is for adding depth to the squad, or acquiring a new option (a Premier league kid with pace up front?). Where is the Coutts replacement, so often spoken of on here? I don't see anyone out there who would come in in January, and slot straight into the role. The management deserve knighthoods if they bring in such a player in January.

We need to resist the urge to panic buy. There's no need for a WB, once Baldock is fit we have Freeman and Lafferty in reserve. Up front we have plenty of options. Defence is OK once we can slot Basham back in there. That just leaves midfield, i.e. a Coutts replacement. Lundstram is good enough to step in Fleck or Duffy's shoes but not as a playmaker. So give CW a couple of million and tell him to find someone, and I've got every confidence he will, and Bob's your uncle without breaking the bank. Simple this football lark.

At the start of the season, who realistically wanted us to stay up, ie 4th or 5th from the bottom, let some other team feel the pain of relegation. So i'm more than happy with the where we are at the minute and long may it continue. 2 really good additions in the team should do it. Lundstrum is slowly filling the boots of Coutts. best game yet at Millwall. Need to see the walking wounded to return and watch us kick on again. Goalkeeper ??? - defence looks ok. JOC plus Baldock and a fit Freeman. Fleck , Duffy , Lundstrum , Basham in Midfield then who from Sharp , Clarke , Brooks , Donaldson , Hanson & Carruthers. who'd be a manager. IN Wilder we trust.
