I hope after reading that that Adkins' Reading was Bassett's Watford.

Yeah same hopingel reading is the expection & not Southampton as back to back promotions is great achievement to be optimistic but he did have under the radar premier league & international quality like Fonte lallana oxlaide Chamberlain lambert & Schneiderlin

Who no-one had heard of at the time, and certainly weren't internationals. Maybe in five years time we'll be saying 'it was easy to get out of L1, we had (have?) internationals like Reed and Adams.'

i knew about lallana, when they were in admin & close to relegaton/ relegated to to L1 i wanted to buy him. but yeah i gte what your saying & who knows

Worth reading the comments Roy found when we appointed Adkins.

Especially Adkins struggle at Reading seemed to be more down to what was going on board level. There have been rumours this season about the relationship between the prince and McCabe not being all rosy and I wonder if that has an effect on this season.

The prince wanting to sack Adkins early maybe? McCabe blocking the decision?

Who knows.

I find it fascinating that his time there is considered such a failure. Its well known that Adkins was mis-sold the project at Reading. He was sold a club that was gearing itself to become a fixture in the Premier League and was under instruction to get Reading playing good football through buying quality, bringing through young players and establishing them as a Premier League team.

They had a very wealthy owner in Anton Zingarevich and Adkins was told he would be backed. Unfortunately, it didn't turn out that way at all and Zingarevich not only decided over the summer to not put in any money but he actually went AWOL. I read at the time on a Reading forum that John Madjeski couldn't even get hold of him for long periods of time, they were utterly rudderless. It meant Adkins had to shelve redevelopment plans as he had inherited a weak squad that could only play the way McDermott had them playing, counter attacking, route 1 percentages. They were hopeless in the Premier League, it was Adkins job to build a team in the championship capable of going back up and sticking.

As I said in my opening post on another thread, he had 1 season in the championship with them, they were in the play offs all season, just missed out on the final day and finished 7th under a very unsteady board. The new board sacked him early the next season, backed Clarke and they finished 19th. Today they sit 14th and that is after a little upturn for them this season. Despite having the most trying circumstances to work under with no backing, he delivered their best result back in the championship. I just personally don't see that as a failure on his part. I think any manager who is put in that position is going to struggle and I would argue that 7th was actually decent in the circumstances

you can slice it anyway you want but he has underachieved for me this season and I'm gutted how it has turned out.

His past is record is impressive, but it is here and now that matters for SUFC. We are long suffering fans and each season brings more disappointment.

Previous promotions are great on the CV, however I'm only bothered about what Adkins does at SUFC and so far he's been very poor A CV does not get you promoted, good management skills do and so far there has been little evidence of this.We can read pages and pages of comments from Saints fans, stating how he great Adkins is and comments along the lines of that he is the best manager who has ever walked on this earth. This may convince some, however I want to see evidence of an up turn in performances and results, before I'm convinced and this will need to be more than two matches. By my reckoning we have lost four out of the last five away games and it would have been five out of five, but for a 95th minute equaliser at Fleetwood. Its only three games ago that we were terrible at Southend. It would be great if Adkins was a success, however the most recent comments made by the fans of his last club Reading, are a worry.

Don't think we can afford to sack Adkins both financially and finding a suitable replacement . To me it does appear he is not only rebuilding the first team squad but also the infrastructure and culture of the club.

The comments on the Reading message board is a concern , even more so after the Derby County comments on Clough which were a mirror image of what we got and had to put up with.

I do think they were mitigating circumstances at Reading , which after having a chairman who cared for the club , new owners came in , and reneged on agreements with Adkins. Lack of commitment and financial backing .

Also I do think you need patience and after 5 years in this league it is something I lack with the blades . Ok Adkins is not responsible , but he is being paid good money to sort the shit out , which he has not cleared but added to. He has to pacify us fans so we trust and have faith in him. Only producing a winning formula will do this IMO.

The main man who will make or break us is McCabe and the board , they are the catalyst to what we do next season. Even Jose , Pep , and that top top guy Diego fella at Aletico Madrid could not be successful at the lane , never mind Warnock , if you do not get financial backing from the board and work together in a democratic way .

Clough autocratic - McCabe autocratic = fuck up.

Loads of unknowns but there is at all clubs , both at the top and at the bottom.
