Radio Sheffield: Speed it is

I could name quite a few ex-players that have turned out to become a good manager. You have to start somewhere, he's been at the club for a while and knows the place well.

Aslong as he gets off to a good start then it could be a good move.

If he gets off to a bad start we need to take it on the chin and shut up. Last thing we need to do is slip into the piggie way of constantly swapping managers.

I've had my say, can't hide the fact that I'm disappointed and think it's a bad move but we have him now and good luck, we'll need it.

Absolutely agree with the bold.

Maybe not the second part but we really need to get behind him and let him have a fair crack of the whip before people start hounding him out

DJ UK has been on here for years mate - he's mostly harmless! Even wished us well before Wembley, and how many of us would have wished the Oink well if the boot had been on the other foot? I remember him getting lots of thanks (when we had a thanks button - Linz/Foxy ;))

And he says here that he hopes Speedy does well.

Seems about as good as you're gonna find amongst our hard of thinking neighbours!

:D Thanks

Yeah, as you say I do wish you well and would love both clubs to do well, but that's for another thread.

As of my previous post:

No imagination: You don't agree? He was a very easy appointment and one that could majorly backfire. Think this one will turn 99% against your board if it goes tits up (which i see it will).

In regards to everyone needing to be behind him. Couldn't agree more, but we all know this isn't going to happen. As soon as he has 2 or 3 bad results, it will be the regular nobbers coming on Radio Sheffield calling for his head (and i mean that for both clubs, Sheffield fans seem to be some of the most fickle in the country, some of them are a disgrace).

I can also see you becoming like us as well. Manager after manager and slowly going down the table. Tbh i can't see Speed being in charge at the end of the season, but like i said i've always liked Speed and i hope he does well.

When the fuss has died down all that has happened is that we have appointed a completely inexperienced manager. Last time we did this it was was Martin Peters and we'd had the opportunity to look at him too. I wish Speed well but am underwhelmed. Looks like a knee jerk sacking and a cheap replacement. We should have had a shortlist and bided time until one of them becomes available. For example when Palace were in trouble last year we could have had Neil back,(not everyones choice but certainly mine) instead we hang on for 6 months and sack Blackwell when it appears there are no better alternatives available than to take a punt on a completely untried and inexperienced manager. How long is the contract and does he have money?

It was a stage-managed outburst from McCabe giving Blackwell the honourable way out whilst taking all the stick for the summer transfers. Blackie knew it was coming before anybody and played the fall guy. Now Speedo has a clean slate and can't be blamed for any signings or criticism for pre-season. Maybe another signing to come, but can't say any more. A bit too close to the source. I mean sauce, erm..

There is always a risk with a fledgling manager, BUT I think this decision has been made shrewdly I believe Speed has gradually been groomed for the job (more than likely without KB's full knowledge!!!) and will have had input into the summer signings, hence the refusal to let him go to Swansea in the summer.

Exactly. Why else did Leon Britton (sp?) come here other than to play under the future manager of Wales? (He is Welsh, isn't he?). Hic

:D Thanks

Fair play. I take back my closing comments. We were on different wavelengths with the imagination comment, but I would still disagree with you. Easy appointment, maybe, but the only sensible option the board left themselves with having allowed significant recruitment in the Summer and a pre-season prep under their belts.

Blackwell going in the Summer would have left the board making a much more difficult decision and maybe there would have been better external candidates. But, based on where we are now we have to allow Speed a chance.
