First half - dreadful, with a couple of chances at the end that gave hope the 2nd half might be better. We were ponderous, dull, no width, launching hopeless balls forward.

Second half - half decent. Nice header by Collins from a decent near-post delivery by Gallagher. That seemed to settle us and at last we started to play a bit more coherently. We weren't really troubled after that. Cresswell had one decent effort - Blackman should have done better towards the end.

Howard 7/10 - important decent save 1st half. Looked confident and steady. First time I've been this season, so was keen to see how he compared to Simmo. Seemed reliable all game.

McMahon 5.5/10 - disappointing game I thought. Couple of bad bits of defending first half, and quite guilty of just lumping it. I expected better given his reputation. Unlucky not to score mind with a decent free kick that was tipped over.

Collins 7.5/10 - solid, assured, calm, and a goal. No complaints - looked easily as good as the Collins last year.

Maguire 6.5/10 - mixed game. Had a torrid first half, giving away free kicks, and in one move getting done twice nearly resulting in a goal. Stupidly booked for kicking the ball away. Improved second half.

Hill 7/10 - one moment first half where he was turned in the middle, but otherwise one o our better performers. He was excellent 2nd half.

Gallagher 6/10 - has a decent shot on him, but in his own words he says he likes being a creative player. A really mixed bag in that respect. Linked up better second half, but another I was expecting a lot more from.

McDonald 8/10 - brilliant, even when we were playing poorly.

McAllister 6/10 - didn't do well first half at all, seemed bypassed by the game. Game into it much more in the 2nd, and made plenty of decent challenges towards the end.

Cresswell 5.5/10 - thought with the exception of one shot, he offered little. Saw plenty of the ball, and was guilty of over hitting crosses, misplacing passes etc. He may be able to play up front still, but the days when he can 'fill in' at left wing are long over.

Blackman 6.5/10 - despite missing a great opportunity near the end after being set up superbly by Porter, he impressed me. Good workrate, touch of quality, unlucky not to score. Needs to be playing with the right partner though.

Kitson 5.5/10 - thought he was terrible. Never really got in the game, no real efforts on goal, didn't seem to try much.

Subs

Porter - looked more deserving of a place in the side on that small cameo than Kitson. Showed strength, worked hard, linked up well with Blackman. That's all still enough to get people yelling at him though - cannot understand some of our fans' clear resentment towards him whatever he does.

Williams - came on to solidify the left late on. Did fine.

Highlight of the game - the melée outside the ground following the goal as one fan was removed for running on the pitch. He escaped the clutches of 2 stewards holding him for imminent police, before running through the car park into the distance, evading a chase that involved 5+ stewards. They ultimately returned empty-handed a few mins later to the delight of the away end that saw it all, who responded with the Benny Hill theme tune.

For me - winning is just about everything. And when the pigs lose too, it's a great day. A bit disappointed to hear Kitson didn't take his chance to impress as we are still searching for an effective strike partnership. And - of course - we are still crying out for decent wingers. McDonald is a class above in the current team.

They sounded fairly impressed with Kitson on the radio, said he led the line well.

Off Topic I Know.
Thanks to John from Stratford, who stomped up for the cab to Yeovil junction.
Only met john today off the train from waterloo but a diamond, cheers pal if you read this.
Hope to see you at Orient in a few weeks.

Yes, I heard others leaving the ground saying he did well. I personally didn't see that today - looked unfit and didn't link up well with Blackman, and I thought that was due to him rather than Blackman. Can only call it as I see it, and I've no axe to grind with Kitson, but thought he was poor.

Listened on Radio pig and according to GOD Kitson did OK, had some good touches and flick ons, and tried to link up with Blackman whenever he could. he's only just finding some fitness so dont write him off just yet. We should err on the judgement of GOD !

Happy with a win. Still unbeaten.

What's up with miller? I quite liked the bit I've seen of him and thought he could play wide if required. He seems to have been frozen out somewhat.

Lots of low marks for a win. A win and the only away team in the division to keep a clean sheet. I know nothing about todays game, but i'll take 3 points every time  just a shame nearly everybody else won.

Can't disagree with the report, think it is spot on. 3 points are 3 points regardless of how they are obtained.

What an ace day! Blades win away and that scummy lot lose again!!! Yabadabadoooooooooooooo

Whilst still a dream what odds a repeat headline

Blades Up, Owls Down
Yes, bring it on!

similar to last season then. Get 85+ pts this time round and we'll win league

Considering Yeovil were one of the bright sparks at the start of the season, quite possibly. Don't get me wrong, I had a cracking day - and if we can grind out results when we aren't playing well, who cares?

Getting Flynn and Doyle particularly back in will be a big boost. If we can fix the right wing problem, and find the best partner for Blackman, we should hopefully see it start clicking.

I went. Disagree on a few points.
Howard. Very solid.
Hill. Terrible. Lazy. No overlap. He was the player that I was most frustrated with.

Maguire was good for me. Only pulled by the referee for being strong and holding his ground.
Kitson showed very positive signs for me.
He was clearly up for it. Some good touches. Clearly overweight, but lasted longer than I thought he would.
Wilson seems to be getting him match sharp by playing him. If you can do that and win, thats ok.
Porter was much better though.

The game could have gone either way.
The worrying thing is that it seems that we are lowering our standards to league 1 level now.
Yeovil are terrible, we should have beaten a team like that 5-0.

But we worked hard and ground out a result.
No complaints really - apart from the hold ups on the M3 - didnt move for an hour.

Funny moment of the day -the man in front of me had taken a plastic flower out of the toilet. (yes there were plastic flower decorations on top of the urinals).
2 stewards came over - took the flower off him and sternly blurted 'we put those flowers in the toilets for everybody's benefit. Not just for you'.

Brilliant. Worth it for that alone.

Hill. Terrible. Lazy. No overlap. He was the player that I was most frustrated with.

Disagree. Strongly. He overlapped in the first half on at least three occasions I can remember, only for Cresswell to ignore him and decide to cut in on his right and cross - two of which were wildly overhit. In the second half he overlapped where he could - particularly towards the end.

Hill seems to be one of those 'terrible, by reputation' players. There was one moment in the first half when he was covering in the middle where he got turned, but that aside he was very solid. To describe him as terrible does him a terrible disservice. He has his limitations, no hiding that, and frankly I'll be very happy to see Lecs return - but he was more than fine today.

I went.I sincerely hope you are taking the piss with this comment or were too pissed to realise how well he played in the second half

Bit harsh on the first half. Not great but McMahon had a free kick tipped over,Collins missed a free header from a corner,Cresswell should have done better with a header and Gallagher has those 3 chances at the end of the half.

I thought we closed the game off well after we scored.

Blackman frustrates me thou as he seems to react to situations rather than aniticipating. Maybe that is is lack of experience. Surprised Miller of Cofe didnt replace him for the last 1o minutes thou.

My other worry is that, other than the Bournemouth game,we struggle to score more than 1 goal per game.

Hill - I am sober - and stand by my thoughts. He was bad.
Yes he did overlap twice later on after 70 minutes of not doing it.

Hill must watch dvd's of David Batty, every ball is only ever simple, square or backwards.

Not many teams will go to Yeovil and come away with three points.
I feel that todays game was very similar to the one last season when we won by the same score. It was a scrappy match today and I agree with the OP, the first half was dreadful, the only high point being Gallaghers free kick which deserved to go in.
Thought we scored against the run of play when Collins bulleted his header into the top corner from a lovely Gallagher corner although after the goal, we seemed to be on the back foot for a while.
Last fifteen minutes belonged to United and we could have increased the lead with a bit more composure in front of goal.
McDonald was superb, Porter did well too when he came on. All in all, a good day out and three very good points , well done Blades.

Sorry but you must have watched a completely different game to the one I saw today and i don't think many who went will agree with you. People can have opinions but based on today's performance you are way off the mark.

The fact you called him lazy is probably the most ridiculous comment I have heard about him. He is probably our most energetic defender. His quality may not be there sometimes but he always gives everything.

If you think Hill is lazy,i dread to think what you thought of Blackman's efforts at times today..

Another example of a 'scapegoat' not being credited for a good performance ?

I had a feeling we may sneak a win today. Yeovil are on a bit of a slide, still a good win though. Relieved to get Doyle and Flynn back, fed up with the cobbled together team we've had to put out. I reckon their suspensions have cost us 4 points, Bury and Doncaster are crap. Both will be down near the bottom. We probably would have won both games.

Personally i think Blackman needs a game or two on the bench. For two reasons, i think he's the most likely player to come on as sub and score, which is something we need whilst we aren't scoring more than 1 a game. Plus we desperately need to give all our strikers more playing time, to see who are our best options. As much as i don't like Porter, he needs a start or two so we can make final judgment on whether he can be a part of the team or not. We need to start getting a clear idea of who our best strikers are. Blackman is probably our best striker, unless Kitson discovers form of old. But he isn't setting the world alight. I'd like to see how Porter and Kitson can play together. Not all that hopeful, but it's worth seeing before we get rid of Porter. Blackman needs games too, i'm not saying he doesn't. But it wouldn't do much harm leaving him on the bench til about 60 mins for a game or two.

I wrote a more detailed report here http://www.s24su.com/forum/index.ph...t-olles-day-out-in-yeovil-match-report.28077/

I pretty much agree with Loughboro's take on the game, though disagree with the ratings. McDonald was queit for me, Maguire had a mare, Blackman was completely annonymous and Kitson did ok. The latter lead the line well. Whilst he did not look a real threat, he was a handful. The ball generally sticks when it goes to him. He is strong, decent in the air and brings other people into play. I can see the appeal of playing him away from home. Gallagher showed some good flashes and his set pieces were excellent. I got mixed up in my match report and though McMahon was taking the corners. However it was Gallagher. His set pieces were very good. We scored from one and generally troubled them. He is worth having in the team just for this, though he looked very dangerous towards the end of the first half. The game was dire and we were far from impressive. Yeolvil will feel that they should have got a result. Howeer we won and kept a clean sheet. As the game went on we got stronger and they did not trouble us after the goal. Not many teams will come to Yeovil and roll them over. Hence the bottom line is it is a very good 3 points (albeit a tad lucky).

Hill was one of our better players yesterday. You must have been that Hill baiter stood in front of me....

I actually cannot understand the criticism of Hill. He is not Roberto Carlos, but at third tier level he is a solid defender. On Saturday he was tock solid. He was much better than the shaky McMahon. Hill really needs to work on his distribution (that is Wilson or some other bugger needs to tell him to stop hoofing it and play it short - pass to Kev!) but he is good left back. It is a bit embarassing to see him spaly it out into the stand, when he wants to play it down the line, from time to time. However his primary duty is to defend and he is good at that. He gets tight, his positioning is pretty good and on Sat-di he stopped everything coming down the right. The other side was much more of a threat with McMahon looking very dodgy.

3 points, still unbeaten, playing DOWN to L3 standards. If we keep going till Chrimbo and are near the summit[I THINK WE WILL BE] Danny to into the loan market, and strengthens team for final promo push Paddy Doyler back on satdi now we'll see what were about.,just a pity Big Kevin did'nt score for Bolton.U.T.B.
