Smashing day out. Couple of Kelhams in the Cremorne, down to Salt and Battered, met up with me two (long suffering Blades fans) mates. Took our seats at the Shoreham end of the South Stand at the front (where I bumped into an old Navy mate of mine from years gone by)

We turned out in what appeared to be

-------------------------Long----------------------
---------Baptiste----Edgar-----McEveley-----
Basham---Coutts-Hammond-Flynn----Done
------------Adams----------Sharp--------------

Walsall settled and stroked the ball about a bit as we chased. Then we started to put a few moves together down the left with Flynn and Done combining well and outflanking their wide men. It looked quite decent for a while and whilst Walsall tried to come back at us, they didn't really threaten Longs goal much

Another decent move saw a cracking chest high cross go across goal and BASHAM was at the back stick to power his header into the roof of the net. Excellent movement and an excellent goal from a side which looked dangerous and purposeful.

Five minutes later we went down the opposite flank and some deft footwork saw a cross chested by SHARP and crashed into the net from just inside the box. It truly was a splendid finish by a bloke really showing his class at this level.

The rest of the first half saw us stifle what Walsall had to offer.

Second half we sat back but really, for a side who looked very much together earlier on this season and likely automatic contenders, they barely gave us much to get upset about. We threatened near the end but a bit more confidence from Adams and Flynn and we'd have had another, which really would have been well deserved.

The players left the pitch to well-earned applause. A good game and the best team won.

Long 7/10. Steady enough
Baptiste 7/10. Very solid and surged forward down the wings at times to push the attack on
Edgar 7.5/10. Good game. Didn't give their centre forward anything to go on
McEveley 7.5/10. A good performance. Looked solid
Done 8/10. Grafted and worked hard with Flynn
Hammond 6/10. Huffed and puffed, but to me, no real end result
Coutts 6.5/10.Still a bit in-and-out of the game at times
Flynn 7.5/10. Good graft with Done and positionally very sound tucked in on the right
Basham 9/10. Best game I have seen him in a Utd shirt. Really dominated the wing and although skinned by Henry a few times, was very good and took his goal well
Adams 6/10. Not really at the races today
Sharp 8.5/10. Typical, chase-everything Billy Sharp performance. Great finish for his goal

McGahey (for Baptiste) 7/10 This kid isn't bad. Good surging runs from the back
Woolford (for Done) Don't think he touched the ball
CL (for Adams) H Not on long enough to make any impact

Overall, a pleasing performance in a game I expected us to get tubbed in. Will we make the playoffs? No. Was this a step in the right direction? Yes. Did they show some promise ... yes.

Nice to bump into Grappler at the end as well. Nice to see you mate.

I like this about Mcgahey, seen him do it a few times now.
