Promotion dilemma

There seems to be a lot of mediocre teams up there to me...Whenever I watch the likes of Southampton,Palace etc, they look very ordinary...i'd fancy our chances of staying up with what we've got plus a few additions to be honest.
I watched Palace on tv at Donny...I know they had one or two changes,but they were shocking...moved the ball slowly,wanted to much time,lost possession a lot...I just thought United would smash these on this showing.
Not there yet,so I'm only really looking at West Brom...we have a tough run in,but this group of players just keep surpassing themselves,i wouldn't put anything past them.

I've only watched us in the Premier League for one season and I remember being so happy that Wham screwed us out of another season of watching us compete with some of the world's best. Every year you see three teams come down celebrating that they get to play a level lower. Ask any Villa, Boro, Stoke, or Swansea fan if they'd have it back and I'm sure they'd say no.

Why even bother going up at all?

Agree entirely. I thought we’d hold our own in the Championship, but I didn’t expect us be pushing for promotion last season and I certainly didn’t expect us to be even stronger this season and be in with a shout of autos.

It’s all down to good management and if Wilder is in charge then I’d be optimistic we’d survive our first season in the Prem. After that though it will come down to investment in the playing staff and that’s the biggest uncertainty and possibly the thing that could eventually see Wilder walk away.

Lovely sunshine, new kit, no longer a 3 sided ground, a brilliant equaliser by Charlie George near the end denied us a win against the champions. I thought we were going to stay in the top division for many more seasons!

We'd been tipped that year by a few pundits as dark horses for the title :( Curse of the South Stand.

I don’t agree with that view tbh. It’s brilliant to see your club competing at the highest level with the very best. If you’ve got good management then anything is possible. I’m not suggesting we would finish at the top end in our first season, but somewhere mid table would be possible.

I think most fans of relegated teams would want to be back there. It’s football’s ultimate prize.

I enjoyed our little flirtation with the Prem under Warnock, even though he ran scared half the time and went all negative with his team selection away from home. I enjoyed those years under Bassett too. And back in the days of the old First Division I enjoyed seeing us topping it for several weeks at the start of the season. Great, great memories.

Know what you mean but a football club must keep progressing or stagnate. Like Wednesday. With sensible investment and our indomitable team spirit, there's 6 to 8 teams we can match. Can the players/Wilder/Knill etc. make the step up? Reading this excellent if coruscating article, it would appear that some of the most formidable 'opponents' are the money-grubbling agents.

I was amazed to hear so many on Praise and Grumble saying we're off to Anfield etc. Do they not realise that Wednesday fans will love throwing that back at us, as we would to them, if we fail in the play offs again. I don't think the majority of our fan base think we're going up definitely. Its still far too early to tell, but I do think we have an excellent chance.
 



If, and it’s a big if, then let’s hope we don’t do what Fulham have done and ditched most of the team that got them there but give most of them a chance.

I realise it's probably been discussed on here over and over but to have watched the Blades in the top flight in your first 5 seasons and then only see them appear there in another 5 seasons over the next 43 years just emphasizes how things went so badly wrong.

My track record of watching the Blades is similar to yours and because my earlier years watching them was in the top flight I consider the natural position for us us in the top division.

I guarantee that Chris will already have plan A and plan B in his back pocket, and will have a list of requirements for both options. Whether he gets them is the question, but it won't stop him planning.
 
Why would anyone not want us to go up?
If we don't then eventually CW Will manage in the EPL with or without us.
 
OK, bit premature but let's look objectively.

The team who's model we would need to follow is Bournemouth without a doubt.

1. Stick with the manager (Howe) and his trusted servants (Arter, Cook, Francis, Wilson) who got us there with a few well-chosen signings (Murray, King, Distin)
2. Continue to play the football that got us there - none of this overly negative, happy with a point rubbish, keep attacking teams the way we already do
3. Gradually evolve the squad but never wholesale changes in one window, be happy with mid-table for a couple of years

You can add the 60s to that list for me so you can say my formative footballing years were spent watching United in the top flight. For me its no big deal, it will be a return to our little slot in the grand scheme of things.

The cloud on the silver lining has to be the boardroom squabble. For the sake of argument, lets say United get £100m up front if they are promoted. That's £50m each for the Prince and McCabe. It's unlikely their courtroom battle will be resolved by then so do you think either of them are going to sign off a cheque for this amount for CW to spend or are they going to stick it in an ISA and leave it there as insurance should they lose the legal battle? It will be a brave man who's going to gamble £50m on winning what is a red or a black on the roulette wheel.

The thought of United going up with this bollocks still up in the air fills me with despair. The outcome would be a fucking disaster.

All very sensible, but Bournemouth also invested millions in the squad. Don’t forget that!

Go up and invest the money wisely. We'll likely go back down again, if not straight away then the season after. Build a team for the future which will mean we go back up stronger.

Unless there's massive investment from somewhere.

Seriously though , far worse teams than ours with far worse managers than ours have been promoted to the Premiership and stayed there .

Even without ANY further additions , plus the loanees, I would fancy us to be well clear of the relegation zone . With a couple of shrewd signings I think we could make mid table at least .

Oh , and by the way , anyone who thinks that Billy Sharp couldn't cut it at that level will be proved wrong . Again .

It may not happen but whatever the outcome , this season will be one that Blades of all ages can look back on with a great deal of pride .
