I can’t speak for Ball_Sup (Phil) but whilst I agree that our club is run well, it is being run well within the business model that is the Premier League. The way the Premier League is run and the state of the leagues below it (as we know all about just a few seasons ago) is hardly run for the benefit of football. I think if we weren’t in our first season back in the top flight we might have a different view of how the Premier League is conducting itself.
Yes. I've got my anti-Saudi money agenda. But, putting that to one side. I'm resigned to the Mad Premier League Business Model that Utd have been sucked into. But, if I'd have a free choice, I wouldn't want the ownership of the Club to be decided by a fucking Court Case and I'd prefer the football side of the business to own the ground we play on. It's difficult to feel sympathy for PL clubs as businesses. They run an insane set of spending. Underpinned by very risky income models. And have to take ludicrous decisions like not owning their own stadium. All that is being exposed now - and the saviour is.....
Playing games at half ten on a Tuesday morning
In a park near Burton on Trent
With no spectators
Apparently.....
And Wilder can't even pick the team if someone's got a cough.

It's not football anymore! (and it's not about VAR)
  • Playing in some neutral empty stadium
  • Playing shortened halves
  • Players deciding if they want to play or not
  • 5 subs
  • No relegation
Seriously is that a brand that excites?

I'd rather wait, finish this whenever we can properly and delay/scrap next season

How do you suppose United continue to stay in business during a delay of many months or a season which doesn’t take place?

Yeah ,hopefully we will be one of the clubs that survives till then

They don’t need to, no income and similar outgoings generally means a business won’t last very long.

You can say that about every club. Football will not cease to exist, it will be restructured. Big wages for starters.

Fuck it then ,let's just stay in the house forever watching television and zoom chatting the family with nothing to talk about except how bored you are
Its not the zombie apocolypse its a virus with the same mortality rates as seasonal flu

We will all have to change the way we live our lived from now on including footballers and celebrities

If you want to.wait for things to get back to the way they were ( even though you didn't like that either ) then you could be waiting so long that the clubs aren't there anymore

If youf prefer a rebirth or some sort of phoenix club just go and watch Sheffield f.c

So, you'd rather have no football for a year than watch a diluted version? Me, I'd happily watch a kickabout in the park right now.

I don't support Sheffield FC. Different people will see it differently. That's OK. But, I'm not worried about pointing out how far away from being football many of these proposals are. And, they're needed because PL Clubs couldn't run their spending v income business. Just The Flu......

here in Spain we are following a resumption to a normality road map of baby steps , try a little relaxation of rules here the odd shop opening there
in the UK the media are calling for release one week and then when Boris says he will set out the first small steps on Sunday the idiot press say they are sending out mixed messages
THE BBC and Sky seem to just want headlines and sticks to beat everybody with

our death toll is higher than Spain and France they moan
lets forget little details like there's 23million people more in the UK than Spain and 10 million more than in france

care homes are 85 per cent privately owned in the UK ,,,, why the governments getting the blame for ppe shortages here is barmy
of the 15 per cent that arent private most are council run so some come under labour control, yet one Labour female MP says that the govt are not doing enough
does that include those run by labour, perhaps she should think before slagging off whoever runs them

Here in Spain the care home population is 155000, in the UK its 468000,,,,, I wonder who will suffer most deaths what does logic say

What if they live with someone at risk for various reasons. Football is just a game.

Priorities.

It's a business. A business that employs far more people who don't play and coach than those that do.

It's a tough enough time as it is but people are going to need to return to work with the available risk mitigation in place.

I have genuine sympathy for people concerned for themselves and loved ones who are higher risk, but I also have sympathy for people seeing their livelihoods fading away and young kids couped up in flats for potentially months on end.

Lockdown can't continue indefinitely until a vaccine is or isn't found. At some point in the coming weeks and months there has to be a relaxation otherwise we'll have far bigger issues than Covid.

If many people of all ages earning minimum wage or modest salaries are returning to work, many worried about the virus no doubt, then it's a bit rich young fit healthy footballers earning 10s or 100s of thousands of pounds a week refusing, when they will have a more protected and monitored environment than most.

I didn't say its just the flu and you always come across as if supporting Sheffield united is part of some punishment you received and are forced to.carry out until the sweet release of death

I don’t think anyone has said there will be midweek games at 10:30 have they?
Playing games while people are busy “working” from home is hardly likely to kickstart the economy.

It will be interesting to see what they do propose for the scheduling though.
I would go with 18:00 and 20:00 on Tuesday and Wednesday (10 matches)
12:00, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00 and 20:00 on Saturday and Sunday (10 matches)
Then all the final matches to be played at the same time.
Doesn’t seem to be too hectic a schedule and all games can be completed in 5 weeks.
Would just need some careful scheduling to ensure that clubs aren’t playing back to back matches.
No doubt certain clubs would jump on any opportunity to cry foul if they proposed playing on Monday and Friday as well.

I couldn't agree more Blade too Long. After the daily Downing Street briefing the BBC news go straight in with a stick to beat the government with. Sky and ITV are just as bad. They don't seem to mention much about the support the government is giving with salary support, rate and rent reductions, tax relief, loan holidays etc., schemes which are probably the most generous in the world. I turn the news off now before I through a brick at it.
Anyway, I don't wish to get too political on a football forum so I'll shut mi gob na.
Let's get back to the footie as this lockdown is making me go do dally!

It's quite simple. Until there is a vaccine or proven and universally available effective treatment, we are going to remain in this predicament. So what do we do? All be put to sleep for a year or so then suddenly woke up when normal life can return and pick up where we left off? Some people need to get real. We have to learn to live with this virus and adapt our economy, working, socialising and living paterns accordingly. All this whinging about how unfair option x, y or z is a load of bollocks. Ffs, I'd hate to be in the trenches with some of the folk in positions of relative power these days.

As has been said, whatever we do will of course be a compromise situation. Let's just try to start to get back to some sort of normality even if it means behind closed doors football and all the appropriate safety measures that it will take. The fact that some clubs are using this to try to avoid any risk of relegation on an obvious technically is fucking appalling in my book. Yes, ok we'd all love for this pandemic to have never started and life just to have carried on as normal. But that is not the case, we are where we are so let's pull ourselves up by the bootstraps and get on with it.

Up the mighty Blades!

The person at risk should be isolated, the person earning the money to pay for this should continue to do what they do to pay for it, nobody should be given a free ride for the sake of it.
Football is a business.
As you say 'priorities'.

Great post BTL. I must admit I'd thought that our govt had done an ok job managing the Covid 19, but then was shocked to see our death toll compared to Germany's. What you highlighted about the care home numbers here compared to Spain was very important and puts thing in perspective. Also the fact that the care homes should provide their own ppe (as they are private companies) surely has been conveniently swerved. I've never heard any mention of it.
As for the future of football, it seems clear to me that along with every other type of social gathering ie pubs, theatres, gigs etc it's never going to return in its current format till there's a successful vaccine available to all. I fear for the clubs who are lower down the pyramid as their viability relies on income from supporters coming through the gates.

Society reacts against change rather than logic. The fact that work-related deaths per person in the NHS this year will still be less than the normal average in agriculture and construction is over-ridden by the previous perception that Healthcare was a low risk profession, a situation that has changed. When this is all over we’ll still be cursing the tractors that hold us up.

I agree with comments above about the news - finding issues with the government is more provocative than saying they are doing a good job. The stats are all reported in an agenda-driven way - pressure was put on when carehome deaths weren’t included and as soon as they were we were criticised for having high death rates compared against countries who weren’t including carehomes!

If you want cold hard facts read the FT and look at the stats on their website.

These are potentially fellas with enough money to last a number of lifetimes. Their priorities are completely different to personon earnings a normal wage. Some of them will have be paid a million quid since the last time they kicked a ball.... threatening to withdraw any payment from them lined up against their loved ones health is hardly a choice for them.

the suggestion is that they don't need to risk anybody's health and they have the resources to support this, it's about integrity, fulfilling a contract which made you them that wealthy.

My original post was in reply to someone who said he wouldn't respect the person who refuses to make a choice of money over their family. I stand by disagreeing with that nonsense.

League 1 and 2 not going to finish the season.

Votes upcoming to decide how to finish the season with a stupid weighted PpG seemingly favourite...

Premier league also. I'll take that, we finish 6th and the Shammers are relegated, no wonder Brady has been so vocal.

PL will finish, as for times they were proposing 3pm kick off's shown free on clubs Youtube channels live.

Forget the Premier League, I'm still dreaming about the FA Cup, and when I say "dreaming" I mean just that. Last week I dreamt that we beat Arsenal 3-1 behind closed doors, having to watch it on the telly. We were 1-0 down after 6 minutes but then two quick goals, in the 56th and 58th minutes, saw us go 2-1 ahead. We then added a third in injury time.

This week I progressed to the semi-final, this time in front of a crowd, and somehow against Reading, my dreamy mind not questioning the fact that we'd already disposed of them in the 5th Round. 2-1 down going into injury time, we equalised from a corner. In extra time Reading had went 3-2 up through a controversial goal which was just in the process of going to VAR when I woke up. Devastated not to know the outcome.

If I manage to pick this dream up and we finish the game, providing it is in United's favour, I will be suggesting my dreams to the FA as a way of completing the tournament.

If I die and go to heaven, and God tells me that indeed our name was on the Cup in 2020, but alas, Coronavirus put paid to our success, I'm going to be pretty annoyed.
