Sheffield United v Portsmouth 29.12.84 | by Sharrowblade

Home to Portsmouth in the 84-85 season.

Can’t remember the match but that’s irrelevant.
I always remember that programme because I’m in the crowd on the cover of match day programme. It’s showing the away game at Oldham from earlier in the 84-85 season.

Instead of going on the away end behind the goal. About 10 of us Blades were stood in the side terracing. We did it quite regularly back then, you just had to make sure you weren’t wearing colours and they’d let you in on the turnstile.

I’m quite tall, 6 foot and stood right at the back near the left hand side of the picture with a light grey jacket on.
The Pompey game was odd. United had the better of it but it was 0-0 with about 25 mins to go. Then Alan Knight miscued a clearance straight to Glen Cockerill, who lobbed Knight to open the scoring, and the floodgates. 15 mins later we were 4-0 up. They scored a late consolation and it finished 4-1.

3 days later we were 2-0 up on Birmingham at home, went 2-4 down, and it finished 3-4. 12 goals in 72 hours.

I was at the Pompey game but I was never allowed to go on New Years Day because my parents had an open house thing for family and friends on that day every year, so I was confined to my bedroom listening to the shambles unfold at the Lane via score updates on Radio Hallam.

Remember the Birmingham game was stood on the terrace right near away fans .
The fuckers fired a flare of some sort and it hit the fence at the front of the terrace.
I saw it as it left the away end ...fucking shit me sen .😃

Portsmouth goal was a last minute pen which was greeted with ironic cheers by the United fans.

I’ve got a random assortment of match day programmes from home games spanning 2016/17 season to 2021/22, if anyone would like to buy them?

All in good condition. A breakdown of what I’ve got from each season, below.

16/17 - league one champions v chesterfield (1)
17/18 - 18 league, 2 cup and 2 duplicates (22)
18/19 - 1 pre season (inter), 12 league and 1 cup (14)
19/20 - 16 league, 4 cup and 1 duplicate (21)
20/21 - 18 league, 1 duplicate and 2 cup (21)
21/22 - 6 league (6)

Nicky Johns in goal for Charlton.

Blades of a certain era will remember how Tony Currie, appearing for Leeds at The Lane, left Johns in a sprawling heap in the back of the away-end goal one floodlit night long ago!

My first of two visits to the Valley, travelled by train from Newbury (I was in the 6th form at school) and met my Norwich supporting mate (he left school in summer 1978) at the ground. We stood on the big terracing. The ground capacity was 66,000, the biggest in the league at the time.

Neil Shipperley's dad, Dave, opened the scoring with a header. Imre Varadi equalised but Mike Flanagan scored twice late in the game.

At least two European Cup winners appearing for The Blades! But I’m really struggling to remember our #12 ?!?

Wigley was an intermittently skilful winger we signed from Forest in Oct 85 as a replacement for the aging Colin Morris.

Unfortunately for Wigley, Morris then went on a great run of form and he didn't get much of a look in. He went to Birmingham in March 87 with Martin Kuhl coming the other way

His only goal for United is still fondly remembered by us oldies however. It was in Nov 85 against Blackburn at the Lane, when on a run from the half way line, he beat half the Blackburn team before slotting in in.

The most insane thing about the old Valley Kop was that it was, unusually, actually a Terrace...

PS: 7 players in the centre semi-circle!

Shifting these two pieces on, due to moving and decluttering. Drop me a message if you’re interested.
