Somebody made a reference on the old shirts thread about an original away shirt from 81 going for £511.

To a degree I can understand that.

With regards to programmes recently one that stood out was this one:

A word of warning, its aint that rare, good condition at a push £20-25.

This has the score written on the front and isn't in great condition.

The score written on the front would seriously devalue it, and many wouldn't touch it.

Always take a look at the bidding pattern.

Its rare to have any programme such as this to get more than a handful of bids and most would come in the final couple of minutes if at all.

I'm always cynical when there's a lot of bids made by a couple of people and in small increments. Its shill bidding,

I met a lad once who had begun collecting Sheffield Eagles programmes, I noticed he was on ebay and had bid on 20 programmes. I got in touch with him and told him how much he'd bid on each item and he asked me how I knew. I said you've bid a fiver on each one, and the seller has a little friend and they have bid you up. I told him to withdraw his bids and see what the seller will do. I promised him the seller would withdraw all the items, which he did.

They were worth a quid each tops.

Don't be put off tho, most sellers are good, its just something you should always keep in mind.

I have to agree with Deadbat, some of the prices are getting silly.

Neshblade raises a good point, I'm no expert on shirts but if I were to pay out a substantial amount, (for say a match worn shirt) I'd like to know where it came from and who had worn it. Not just go on the say so of a bloke who was selling it.

Supply and demand. The original shirts will never be made as they are again, and year on year less of them will survive.

If the club bring out remade versions the price is likely to go up as they become fashionable the originals will stand out due to the fact that they're the real deal.
The new versions don't have done of the original features such as manufacturers logo etc.

I reckon if we were relegated/ to stay in the championship the market for Blades shirts would crash. I got the 78 home shirt for 90 quid and the yellow laver away for 40 quid from classic football shirts whilst we were in league one. If they were to go on there now they'd be at least 300 and 100 each.

It must be a Scottish theme Sharrowblade. We know our friends north of the border tend to pay a little more for pre 1960 programmes. The Utd v Clyde friendly from the 50s went for a similar amount a few months ago…. Crazy….
It’s getting rarer to find a hidden gem nowadays with people thinking what they have is worth far more than it really is but I managed to find someone selling a bag full of around 100 United programmes for £15. At least half were suffering from damp and 75% were battered and you wouldn’t have paid him 15p for them until you spotted one of the last pictures he posted.
BINGO

Morning Stu, I'm going to take it that you weren't interested in the Locks ;).

And were more interested in the Ipswich programme.

Auction Watch:

Sheffield Auction gallery last thursday didn't turn up anything of note for United collectors, although there was a surprise that the John Lundstram shirt went for £50.

Having a sort out and found all these in a box. Programmes ranging from 1993 to 2004. Someone is welcome to have them. Just message me.

Ta

Ok I admit defeat, what is so special about the Ipswich programme ? ( I though programmes from the 70’s were fairly common and I have loads of them in the loft somewhere)
The game was postponed in December and played in March 1974 midweek during the power crisis, John Hope’s last game for United I think.. might be the original that is worth something

I came home for that weekend from my boarding school in December 1973 looking forward to Furphy's 1st match but it snowed heavily overnight. It was the first time for some years that we had a home game postponed due to bad weather.

Thanks Both. 73/74 was my first season of going regularly but I have no memory of that.
Programmes from that season are, like most 70s programmes, pretty common and worth no more than a pound. This postponed one is quite rare. As for value I’ve only seen a handful sold, for anything from £50 to £100.

I would say that's a bit on the high side.....but I suppose it depends if there's a nutter buying it.....and we all know 1 or 2 of them ;)

We'll be looking at postponed programmes shortly, as well as the 'valuable ones', Pre-War, friendlies, programme fairs, auctions, this season's programmes and the big dilemma, the question of Storage.

So what of our next away offering of the season, our 2nd, given that Swansea aren't printing a hard copy till the end of the season.

So here's Luton, basically 60 pages of very little, with a tonne of adverts about 24 pages. I've seen better programmes in the Northern Counties League.

Begins badly, picks up a bit in the middle, ends badly.

There's a page on former Hatter and Blade Martin Crainie.

The opposition profile is minimal to say the least. 5 players. Verrips, Bashembauer, Sander, McBurnie and the one to look out for.....Brewster!

There's also a double page spread on United's ten top managers, I'm shocked no Bryan Robson, or Nigel Adkins.

This is the bottom of the League for your £3.50's worth.

The Sheffield Football Memorabilia Fayre returns after a 2 year absence and will be taking place at the Norton House Country Club, Sheffield S8 8HD. (Opp St James Church, Norton). Just off the outer ring road. Parking available

Its being held on Thursday 30th December.

Recent programme Fayre's have been more interesting lately, with some good stuff knocking about. Should be a varied selection. (Programmes, Tickets, Teamsheets, Big Match, Autographs, Cards and the odd gnome).

We have 11 dealers in all attending, and I'm hoping that the replica FA Cup and Premier League Trophies will be making an appearance for a photo shoot opportunity.

If there is anything that you would like the dealers to bring, let me know and I'll pass that information on.

I've already been asked for United Pre-war, Friendlies, Reserves, and badges.

On my behalf, I've also asked for a turnstile 🤔 ;):).

It will start at 10.30, ends at 1:30pm. Entry £1, (Proceeds going to the club). U16s Free, includes raffle ticket. Drawn at 12:30.

I Understand the bar will be open for tea's and coffee. And for alcohol from 12. (Moonshine, Brown Cow, Farmers Blonde, Stones, Carling, Coors) on draught.

Will keep updating as we go.

I used to go to the annual Sheffield programme fair at the Royal Victoria Hotel from 1980 to about 1985.
I also used to go to the programme seller, who had a stall at the open air market next to Sheaf market from 1978 to 1981.
and I also used to visit the programme shop at Shalesmoor from 1984 to 1986.
He was a big Unitedite, think he was called Alan, I’m sure he said in the shop that he had every United programme from about 1930.
He always had a stall at the Sheffield Programme fair (at the Royal Vic) too.

I have hundreds of United programmes - mainly home but a large number of away too - going back to the late 70s. Although I don’t really want to, I’m thinking I may need to offload them as they take up too much space. Can anyone recommend the best way of selling programmes? Thanks.

That would be Alan Scholey, and yes he had quite a collection.

The Royal Vic was its traditional venue until the pandemic and sadly the organizer (Gordon) succumbed to illness earlier this year.

I'm not sure how much the Queen Vic would have been to hire but I don't suspect it was cheap.

So hence the new venue and the new organizer (me) 🤣

Hi Deano, the problem you've got is that there's no great value in them, unless you've got some hard to find friendlies and there's not many of them in this period.

1. Individually by ebay: its not really worth the effort and time.
2. Bulk lot by ebay: Much quicker, but not likely to sell for any value....... if at all. (Unless there is a newbie collector wanting a foundation start for collecting).
3. Auction House: May fetch £20-30 depending on who's in attendance, but then there's your sellers fees.
4. Find somebody local who'll give you £10-20 for them if you're lucky (Remember somebodys got to collect them and they will be heavy).

Or do what a lot of people end up doing and ask if anybody wants to take them off your hands before they are disposed off. (They do take a lot of space up)

Sorry that they aren't better answers.

There used to be a bloke who had a shop at Scarborough, he sold programmes, memorabilia etc.
He was a Unitedite but the shop closed due to his illness.

Bert once bought a signed picture of Jimmy Hagan from him.

Your correct Silent Blade Alan passed away a long time ago.he showed me the one-sheet programme. United v west ham 1962-he wanted £50 for it, but I could not afford it at the time. wished I did buy now though.

The United/west ham is not as rare as it once was. They do come up fairly frequently. When I started collecting seriously about 15 years ago it was a £60-£80 programme but over the years its fallen in value and I've seen them go between £30-40. Beware of photo-copies.

He once offered me 1925 fa cup final programme for £250! But couldn't afford it at the time! He sadly passed away in may 1994.
