I think it cost us around 5 million for all the PL upgrades though I never saw a breakdown.

No I recently did the stadium tour and we were told Sky requirements when we got promoted cost £20 million. None of these benefited a single spectator. All about media facilities and other stuff.

I seem to remember, years ago, that there was thought (I've no idea where it came from) that the 18yard line should be extended to the touchlines and the offside rule would only apply inside the area between the extended 18 yard line and the goal line.

It really was a joke - TAA clearly moved his arm towards the ball and benefited from it massively, and a few passes later they'd scored. Scandalous decision, and skirted over by the commentators. You say it didn't make a difference to the score, but who knows? Maybe if they kept Liverpool out for longer the result would have been very different.
It really didn't help that they had Carragher in the studio who tried to make every excuse under the sun for TAA - "his arm was going that way anyway", "he didn't mean it" - absolute biased bollocks. If it had been a Leeds player handling the ball in the lead up to a Leeds goal he'd have been spitting feathers.
That game last night reminded me that next year (all being well!) we'll be subjected to that shit week in week out!

Bound to happen at sometime , the game is just corrupt as fuck now , VAR is just there to take the important decisions out of the of the refs hands so there is no chance of a mistake and the wrong team winning , they can make VAR support any interpretation they want . Additionally, some clubs have become global brands that need success. VAR can be used to help maintain the PL as the home of England's globally-recognised clubs. The PL would prefer teams like Spurs, Everton, Chelsea etc to be in the top six and challenging for Europe. When needed, VAR can be used to assist the top teams.

A few years ago most people would have argued that VAR was making games fairer. Now I doubt that many would agree. Many decisions are just plain wrong. Smaller clubs rarely benefit from the marginal offsides and debatable handballs used by VAR to cancel out goals.

Some VAR decisions are so clearly wrong (Bayern game last week is a good example) that the only conclusion you can reach is that the system is bent.

Some very interesting points there Dkc. It does seem that the top Premier League clubs are immune from VAR controversies. Better to just punish the minnows and make it look like VAR is effective.

VAR always favours the PL's favourite Clubs and that won't change

Hecky will need to drill it into the players next season to play to the whistle (as we will get hardly any decisions in our favour by the PL referees) and we will need to learn to survive the hard way .... against the other team, the officials & VAR

Lets hope for a rapid take-over to clarify the future, a decent budget for Hecky, and a slice of luck that we never usually get

I don't disagree overall, but I didn't feel we were especially hard done by from VAR. Maybe my memory has blanked out the relegation season.

The Lundstram big toe is the obvious one, but we benefitted from a handball rule that was only in place for 2 years (Declan Rice).

Egan's red at Villa was harsh but it was given on the field IIRC not by VAR and I can understand why the ref gave it.

The ghost goal also at Villa in the first game back after lockdown ... it was a joke but not a VAR issue imo.

The Shelvey goal was also ridiculous. Linesmen were flagging when they shouldn't and weren't flagging when they should ... but he wasn't offside and again not a VAR issue for me.

When we have a contentious issue that could go in our favour and they go to VAR I’m fairly sure there’s a ‘Sheffield United’ button that the refs press that bypasses the VAR panel and goes straight to a “fuck off” decision.

the newcastle game actually conflicted me because i thought at the time, the push on gabriel might have got it ruled out, because the other 2 are inconclusive makes sense, to go with the only on field decision

but then the problem that happens too often is we all in these circumstances are judging players as if they are honest players, & wouldnt go down unless they are fouled if players were honest, but we know that couldnt be further from the truth. as im starting to think that on pro license course they have section on how to turn your players into cheating con artists, as more & more are creeping in, ,so we've got to stop pretending that all these players are honest. whats to say that gabriel knew he'd lost the marker so made the most of the contact to get out of jail

We haven't recognized it since we came back to the Prem the first time. Goal line tech and fkin obvious, I mean very fkin obvious, errors only. Otherwise, bin it and let's get back to the good old days of blaming refs for missing calls, ahhhh a simpler time.

It's not really surprising given it's whole reason for existence was errors by the officials in very high profile games.
