“I listen to Radio Sheffield a bit, and to listen to some blunts you would think they never spend money, they seem to think getting Billy Sharp on a free but paying him 20 grand a week is not spending money!! They are worse than the Dingles.”

they understand reality , more than some of ours do
but he missed we paid a fee for Billy too

" Go on the Blades website, full of doom and gloom on there”

my they have their finger on the pulse

"In the League, they’ve scored two fewer goals than ourselves but have shipped eight more than we have and I would hope that as long as our international squad return fit and raring to go, we should be able to gather another three points with, say, a 2-0 scoreline.

Fuck's sake! Get over yersens!

(And hope we nick Bradshaw off em in January.)

Acting like the Massives (of the Midlands).Hope a downfall is coming their way

With a host of Championship clubs and Rangers chasing him, you have absolutely zero chance. He's not going to move to a lower positioned league club, with less ambition and stability at this point in his career........ ;)

Oh dear.....

Barry blunt, please don't tell me you chose that name in an ironic fashion, or are you another barneyowl....

I see nothing here but a defeat. We can't stop conceding and they can score. 3-1 walsall.

Think they'll batter us this weekend, 4-1. As above, they're reasonably good at scoring goals and we're unreasonably bad at defending, they're at home and in form.

I think the Walsall fans' assessments aren't too bad (aside from all the usual, unoriginal, "Blunts" nonsense). I've always thought Wigan will eventually run out as (comfortable) champions of this division. When we first hired Adkins I expected us to be up there with them. As it's transpired he's proven to be terrible in the transfer market and his abject failure to address our defensive fraitilities have cost us dearly. Going into the season with McEveley as captain and with Collins, Freeman and McFadzean as the other components of a back four... dear me. They also speak about us trying to sign half their squad (we've had some terrible players from their place), but for months there was a Radio Sheffield commmentator (can't remember which) saying he could see Walsall being up there if they kept hold of Bradshaw, he was willing one of the local teams to go in for him. We signed Sammon instead.
It's a shame we messed the summer up so badly, because we're not a good team by any stretch of the imagination, but this season it seems like you don't even have to be, this is the worst standard of League 1 since we've been down here without doubt. Our attacking play isn't great, but we do score goals. If we had an ok defence (I'm not even asking them to be good) we'd probably be top 3/4 going into January, where (as the the Walsall fans identify) we could strengthen a little more than most of our competitiors and kick on.

James Shield The Star -
Meanwhile, those seemingly intent on rubbishing everything United do, peddling tired clichés and accusing them of “robbing a living” whenever they suffer a bad result, must decide if they want to help solve or become part of the problem.

Ah Mr Shield has jumped on the 'our fans are cunts' bandwagon I see.

I didn't realise 17,000 people paying their money and turning up every other Saturday could pose a football club such a massive problem.

Keep the booing up, it does wonders for the rest of us promotion challengers.

As for Bradshaw, yes he's excellent but hasn't scored much recently as he's a marked man. However, his workrate and clever movement is superb, so while he's occupying 2/3 defenders it leaves time and space for our other excellent midfielders (and defenders who also get forward) to take advantage of. We're far from a one man team. Unlike your impressive (on paper, once upon a time anyway) bunch of "individuals".

We're average at home so it could go any way. A lot depends on who scores first, if it's us, we usually go on to win. I think a 1-1 draw.

I don't boo, nor do most of us.

The fans are not the problem. But it suits a lot of people to pretend we are.

If anyones robbing a wage its James Shield, obviously hes not been this season and seen what shite weve had to endure

I stopped reading Shield long ago - he's watched this team decline over the last 7 or 8 years. Does he ever ask searching questions about this or is he just the clubs mouthpiece?

I didn't think anyone read The Star anymore anyway?

If there is one fucking thing I detest about the clubs decline from the PL down to stagnating in the 3rd division is people blaming our plight on the fans, we deserve medals the size of dustbin lids for sticking with the tripe we have had served up down the years. I note in Adkins cliche ridden interview yesterday he was lauding Walsall for sticking with the manager, maybe he's starting to feel the heat and will no doubt start blaming us. Fucking managers/journalists are full of blaming the fans but the worse is those on here, our own fans, blaming us. WE ARE NOT AT FUCKING FAULT FOR OUR CLUBS INCOMPETENCE IN THE LAST 5 YEARS AND MORE.

Him and the Radio Sheffield journalists ask fuck all of any contriversy, my brother pulled one of the Radio Sheffield journalists up on this and was referred to as a 'silly boy' my brother merely asked him why he doesn't ask searching questions as a proper journalist would.

Despite your period of relative success - which I am sure won't last - I see your attendances are still shit.

Not how I read it. Doesn't actually say much really other than players are rated more highly by supporters after they've left than when they were there, a phenomenon he admits applies to all clubs, and that people who boo when we're 3-0 up are cunts. And, IMHO, they are.
In fact, I'm going to paraphrase a scouser I heard on Talksport yesterday; middle aged men with beer bellies dressed in a replica shirt, stood making a booing noise, do you realise how fucking stupid you look?

My my my. How brittle must one's self-esteem be if you genuinely take objection at someone or other taking a stab at the fans? I read this type of reaction here all the time. Someone is critical of aspects of our support, and instantly lots of people jump up as if they have been personally offended. Very often it is people who themselves can be very forthright in their opinions in the "I pay my money so can say my piece any way I like" vein.

Well, well, well. The world isn't black and white. There doesn't always have to be easy dichotomies. And anyone offended by statements made by using group labels rather than direct reference needs to grow up and try to work out how the world works and how to live a happy life.

It is perfectly possible that Sheffield United has admirable, tremendous support that deserves medals, yet at the same time certain aspects of how that support behaves or reacts or turns is conducive to worsening performances on any given day. To point that out is neither blaming "the fans", nor is it excusing in any way the many many other failures at different levels of the club that have created a situation where many long suffering fans feel the need to lose patience. It is called analysis in a world where there rarely is mono-causality.

As a middle of the road supporter whose weekend is ruined by any defeat and who even mopes when we skank a few weak penalties at Fleetwood in the JPT, I can be accused of taking the game too seriously, too. I probably do. But deary me. Following the Blades is as personal to me as it gets. The "fans" is not me. I am one of them, but if there is criticism of our support, do I care? No. Why should I? If people wanna throw labels at me or question how I arrange my emotional world around the club, call me boring, a slasher or a clapper, be my guest.

I really don't get this almost jealous or hurt reaction many on here display at criticisms of the fans. I don't even care if the criticism is directly aimed at behaviours I engage in, although to be fair it rarely is, being as predominantly docile as I am... :p

He'll be a marked man on Saturday as well but will notch, that's a dead cert.

A lot depends on who scores first, if it's us, we usually go on to win. I think a 1-1 draw.

We have failed to win any game when we have conceded the first goal this season, despite a few come backs to gain parity.
We concede the first goal far too often - it appears that the players only start to realise that they have a match to play when they go behind.

Our record that the Bescot is abysmal (it was shit at Fellows before that as well) and I'm not expecting that to alter tomorrow afternoon.
I don't expect us to trouble the score sheet given your lads are relatively competent in defence - you'll keep us quiet and then score a couple on the break as our lads are left chasing shadows - 2-0 prediction.

I note in Adkins cliche ridden interview yesterday he was lauding Walsall for sticking with the manager.
But Nige ... why wouldn't they?
Dean Smith creates miracles with the budget he has to work with every year and puts out a very competitive side for this division.
Walsall punch their weight (and more) as they are always going to be a third division side that flirts with the Championship on occasions.

That's what creates the level of disappointment for what the Blades achieve - it isn't anything like punching at the right weight.
We're like an ageing middleweight boxer who looks decent enough when sparring or shadow boxing but then put them in the ring in an actual bout and see them take the first body punch and they are down like a sack of shit.

It's not that I take criticism of the support personally, I don't. I know that I don't boo (and for what it's worth I thought it was very out of order when there was booing at the 3-0 win the other week, although most of it was directed at the ref). What I object to is the insinuation and occasionally outright accusation that the fans are at fault for the team, and the club under-performing.

Not only is this insulting to the thousands of people who still pony up to watch this shit but it is used to mask real problems at the club. It's all too easy for people to blame the fans for poor play. By the same token, it's all to easy for fans to blame the current manager when's he's not responsible for the bloated, lopsided squad, the fact that we're in the third tier, the club's financial straits etc.

By all means, bellends like Shield keep going on about the fans being at fault. Fans keep shouting for a manager's head every six months. Ignore everything else and see where that gets us.

Despite your period of relative success - which I am sure won't last - I see your attendances are still shit.

Yes, and always will be. It's difficult to imagine anything else with our so called illustrious neighbours, who intriguingly also suffer from the "we were good once and have a lot of (booing, negative) fans, so we expect a divine right to success" mentality that particularly Wolves and Villa suffer from.

It doesn't hold us back though, and we generally over achieve in terms of budget and fan base. Better than constantly under achieving.

As for fans not taking the blame. They always will when there's a certain percentage booing. Heard it again last season. If you think it doesn't exist, or accept it does, but doesn't affect anything then you are wrong. It will have players on edge and you will never see the best from them, and the manager won't get the best from them. You're an integral part of the Brammall Lane viscous circle, no matter how large or small that part is.
