James Shield The Star -
Meanwhile, those seemingly intent on rubbishing everything United do, peddling tired clichés and accusing them of “robbing a living” whenever they suffer a bad result, must decide if they want to help solve or become part of the problem.

"A former Sheffield United player once told me: “I never realised quite how good I was until I left.”
The individual, who for the purposes of politeness shall remain nameless, had just experienced a metamorphosis of Kafka-esque proportions. From cart horse to thoroughbred in the space of six short months. The same six months, incidentally, since he had left Bramall Lane."

A Player that left in April / May time - who might that be?
Shield may have altered the time line since he may have thought we'd check?

I can't think of any player that has left us in the last 12 months and gone on to be a decent player at another club - who would have copped it from the fans.
There's plenty that suffered at the hands of the management at the time that may feel they are playing in an environment without fear.

What bull-shit is Shield peddling again now?

Third away game for me this year, as the last two were Gillingham and Port Vale I'd guess we're fucked

With a host of Championship clubs and Rangers chasing him, you have absolutely zero chance. He's not going to move to a lower positioned league club, with less ambition and stability at this point in his career........ ;)

Yeah, you're no doubt right. Can we have Romaine Sawyers instead then?

Unlikely. He has higher aspirations too, and arguably has more potential that Bradshaw. Unfortunately he's not as quick to sign a new contract like Bradshaw so he might end up leaving for nothing. If that's the case then it's more likely to be in the summer.

Rico Henry is the best of the lot anyway. Unbelievable talent for an 18 year old, hence his England recognition and the top PL clubs watching him. Undoubtedly the best I've seen at Walsall at that age.

Anyway, when they all go, the club (and Smith) will bring more through that we can sell for big money, whilst bigger clubs waste money on huge wages to past-it players.

It doesn't say anything about the player leaving in the last year. Poorly written article though and possibly an apocryphal story. I've heard players saying similar on the radio within the last month (and nowt to do with us).

Yes, and always will be. It's difficult to imagine anything else with our so called illustrious neighbours, who intriguingly also suffer from the "we were good once and have a lot of (booing, negative) fans, so we expect a divine right to success" mentality that particularly Wolves and Villa suffer from.

It doesn't hold us back though, and we generally over achieve in terms of budget and fan base. Better than constantly under achieving.

As for fans not taking the blame. They always will when there's a certain percentage booing. Heard it again last season. If you think it doesn't exist, or accept it does, but doesn't affect anything then you are wrong. It will have players on edge and you will never see the best from them, and the manager won't get the best from them. You're an integral part of the Brammall Lane viscous circle, no matter how large or small that part is.

good post actually IMO, often thought we are a bit like Wolves in that way, we have a lot of billy big timers. I don't disagree with booing as a means for money paying fans to express their disappointment after a poor performance, but I think it should be saved until the end of the game.

Agree, it should be after the game, not like in the first half, when you were losing at Southend last week.

Whilst I'm not here to to add urine to fried potato sticks and I'm glad you're enjoying all the good things at your club, I'd just like to point out that we've been doing one half of what you describe for much longer, and much better, than you.

Winz.

Don't we do both? Develop good young players, sell them and invest the money on huge wages for past it players?

"In the League, they’ve scored two fewer goals than ourselves but have shipped eight more than we have and I would hope that as long as our international squad return fit and raring to go, we should be able to gather another three points with, say, a 2-0 scoreline.

Fuck's sake! Get over yersens!

(And hope we nick Bradshaw off em in January.)

Its fair to say that I would swap Bradshaw for Billy and day of the week and the lad sawyers is miles more effective at this level than any of our midfielders.

I'm going tomorrow but I'm not confident of a result of any positive kind when our current appalling form and performances are considered ...... :(

UTB & FTP

Ah Mr Shield has jumped on the 'our fans are cunts' bandwagon I see.

I didn't realise 17,000 people paying their money and turning up every other Saturday could pose a football club such a massive problem.

James Shield has been a know nothing, brown nosing, gobshite for many years and he will no doubt continue to be until the Wedn***ay Star eventually folds through lack of interest.

He's never been known to ask the Club any "uncomfortable" searching questions, always takes the "party line" and is generally about as much use as an ash tray on a motorbike. he is to reporting, what Higdon is to front line striking .......

Hard to believe but this is a 'big game" for the Blades and there's a good chance the team might turn up for once.

Andy Taylor then ;) ?

He hasn't been playing much lately as Rico Henry has been so good. He may play on the left of a back three, depending on which formation we play.

Someone will be along soon to tell us how Andy Taylor is Messi's long lost cousin and since he moved away from the negative fans at Bramall Lane he's knocking on the door of whichever country his Grandma's cat was born in. Another shite player who we had to put up with for far too long.

Love to see us spring a surprise but can't see any thing other than a thumping defeat today, in fact I think that this game is the first of five defeats coming up in the next month, along with losses to Barnsley, Coventry, Wigan and Bradford.

Dark days.

But Nige ... why wouldn't they?
Dean Smith creates miracles with the budget he has to work with every year and puts out a very competitive side for this division.
Walsall punch their weight (and more) as they are always going to be a third division side that flirts with the Championship on occasions.

That's what creates the level of disappointment for what the Blades achieve - it isn't anything like punching at the right weight.
We're like an ageing middleweight boxer who looks decent enough when sparring or shadow boxing but then put them in the ring in an actual bout and see them take the first body punch and they are down like a sack of shit.
Walsall nearly got relegated last season .They hav'nt flirted with promotion since we been in this league always start well then that just keeps them up at the end .

Bring Edgar back in

Bash, Coutts and Hammond in CM

The diamond is completed by Baxter with Adams and Billy up top.

Blades 2 nil win.

UTB

PS: yes, I'm sober - off to the pub later.

No energy in the middle there.

We were no where near getting relegated last season, and up until now Smith has lost his best players every season as he develops them and bigger clubs offer wages we can't afford. If he'd been allowed to keep Grigg, Paterson, Brandy, Cuvelier and others then we'd have gone up by now.

Put it like this. I'd rather watch the football we play every week, than what you mustered today....which mostly amounted to hoof it up to a £20,000 a week lump who earns as much as our entire starting line up today (no, seriously). A bit of context before you gob off please.

But if you're happy with your "proven" managers such as Adkins and Clough, and you demand a name next time, then good luck to you.

Sharp is on £20,000 a week? Brayford must be on about £30,000 then.

The board really have put their hands in their pockets. Thanks to the Walsall fan for letting us know this

£20,000 a week ha ha ha ha

Clough wasn't 'proven', Adkins is and I am happy with him thanks.

Baz, here's a bit of context for you.

This is arguably the lowest point in our history. The way you're bigging your club up, it sounds like this is as good as it's ever been for you and you still couldn't beat the worst Sheff U team I've ever seen.

I reckon with a decent manager, and Adkins has a good track record, we'll improve and eventually get promoted out of this league, that's all that I'm bothered about.

Along the way, we'll have to endure lots more rubbish no doubt, as well as lectures from chip on the shoulder, bitter wits like you (I'm assuming Barry Blunt isn't your real name, it's very funny, well done).
