WE HAVE HAD INVESTMENT

The money just went on the wrong players so was wasted.

So maybe the board have learnt their lesson that's it's not about spending your way out of this league,

Burton, Walsall and Gillingham have shown the way.

JR for next season.

(I know he's a fictional character and dead but couldn't do a worse job)

Season ticket sales will probably go down but if we have a good August and you'll get people without ST's going to a few more individual games. Also, half season tickets will sell well if we are in the top 2 next Christmas.

How far back do we go with attendances? We averaged over 30,000 in the Prem, then we averaged over 25,000 the following few years, so there has been a steady decline in numbers over the last 10 tragic years, but granted the numbers have not dropped as drastically as I anticipated, I'm still surprised we have not hit around 16,000 for games in this division. Shit, we had Tonge, Jagielka, Brown, Kenny, and Onoura playing in front of 13,000 when we finished 3rd in 2002/03, yet Collins, McEverley, Sammon etc have had the fortune to play in front of a solid 19,000 every week.

I think the Mental Health Foundation should pop along to the Lane on Saturday, maybe I could explain to them why I decided to go to the match too.

And who's fault is that? Why should the club and fans suffer for boardroom mistakes?

I also notice how your examples are clubs that haven't achieved promotion, conveniently ignoring the clubs who have spent money to get out of this league, like Bristol, Wolves, MK Dons.

Minus our player sales, how much have we actually 'invested'?

Hang on. You say 'we have had investment'

Let's open that out a bit. How much has been invested in playing staff, since we dropped to div three?

Next, tell me how much we have sold in monetary value of players.

Next, tell me what 'investment' that nice pitch has paid in dividends this season. I wouldn't have twitched an eyebrow if we'd have spent that £1m+ on Dan Burn in the JTW (or STW) if he'd have stopped eight or nine avoidable goals this season. That is investment.

And will/could benefit from £8-9m TV money that Championship clubs next season.

Agreed. He goes to more games than me, more fanatical. So yes happy to accept he's a bigger Blade.

Think there's some sort of 'Big Blade Loyalty Card' scheme coming out next year, Rodders. The more games you go to, you get a swipe at the turnstiles. You get to cash these in and it increases the size and boldness of your font on messageboards. It also works with replica shirts and how many songs you know.

Nowt against Jim, not at all - he's just the unfortunate mouthpiece fronting the shambles. But he does seem to have lost the plot a bit (on behalf of the owners) with his "it'll take seven seasons to put right last season's unexpected excesses" (or whatever "impromptu" tosh it was that he came out with at 11.01 on Monday).

May just as well have this character in charge of PR at the Lane these days -

Because that's how professional football, indeed all businesses, work; the people at the top fuck up, everyone suffers.

I'm sorry but you can't call it investment if we're selling players for £2-3 million, then only putting £500,000 back into the club.

But that would mean picking up players from this or lower leagues that have potential.
We have no one at the club who is capable of spotting these players.

I'm only looking from when the Prince tookover as that ties with the "Investment" proclamation from McCabe.

The way I see it is:
Transfers in (Approximate values):
John Brayford - £1.5m
Matt Done - £500k
Billy Sharp - £500k
Florent Cuvelier - Undisclosed
Stephan Scougall - Undisclosed
Paul Coutts - Undisclosed
(I'll make an assumption that the combined undisclosed fees are £500k)
Total £3m (This doesn't include any signing on fees for our "Free" transfers)

Transfers Out (approximate Values):
Harry McGuire - £2.5m
Jamie Murphy - £1.75m
Total £3.25m

Sheffield United operating loss Y/E 2014 - £3.4m
Sheffield United operating loss Y/E 2015 - £2.5m
Total Operating loss - £5.9m

The operating losses will include income from our excellent cup runs. This leads me to believe there has been investment of, roughly, just under £6m in the last two seasons.

Regards the Desso pitch. Nothing that SUFC do is done for anything other than financial reasons, the long term view is that the new pitch will/should allow us to host events which will increase our revenue (nothing really to do with playing lovely passing footy). I probably agree that the money would've been better spent on the squad instead this season, we could then upgrade the pitch when we're in the championship where the knock on effect of it potentially taking money away from being invested in the playing squad is reduced. The £1m for the Desso pitch isn't included in my figures.

People seem to view "Investment" as spending on players in the squad (probably due to big mouth McCabe) without the "Investment" to cover the Operating Losses where would we be?

They can start with offering a plan fans can buy into. The only plan we've had so far is "game changing investment", we don't have to sell our best players any longer. Ok, so that myths debunked, so what's the next narrative we are supposed to buy into? "We are streamlining the squad and still expecting promotion, get yer season tickets ! " Surely this wont cut it?
