In my recent Updated Graphs thread yesterday, Newbury Blade , CaptainMorgans and Balham Blade have raised points about our poor performances against lower-ranked teams, so I thought that I would put together a few numbers to investigate.

Table 1 is particularly telling.

In Home Games against Top 8 teams we are averaging 2.6 points per game from 5 games.

In Home Games against the current Bottom 16 in the league we are averaging 1.33 points per game from 6 games.

Clearly, when teams come to play us we are more than a match for anybody but we struggle when they play a low block and fast counter.

What is also interesting is that in Away Games against Bottom 8 teams we are averaging 2.25 points per game from 4 games – almost twice the average than when we are at home.

Clearly the poor teams play a more open game when they are at home, which is to our advantage.

We obviously need to improve against teams that sit back and play on the break. As discussed on the other thread, the most promising attacks against Huddersfield were when Illiman (3 times) and McAtee (twice) ran straight at them, causing havoc each time (including our goal). When we tried to pass through them it was like playing in front of a brick wall.

On the flip side – when teams counter attack us with pace down our open middle, having just Norwood and Egan in front of them is hardly a fair race, and has caused us many problems!

If our Home results against Bottom 16 teams matched our Home results against Top 8 teams we would have 7 or 8 more points – and be 4 or 5 clear of Burnley.

Good stuff, perhaps at home against the more defensive teams we should go 4 at the back and add an attacking player such as Khadra.
In my opinion we should be moving gradually to a back 4 system anyway, as per just about every premium league team and an increasing number of championship teams.

Thank you

Very interesting stuff

Agreed, a back 4 of Baldock, Anel, Egan and Clark is very good at this level.

The key is not to do what we did for long spells in the first half against Huddersfield which was play the game in front of them where they just wait for us to put a cross in.

The same goes for anyone we're playing in this league to be honest which is to move the ball fast and make the defence face their own goal. Once they're doing that, we've got enough talent to capitalise. As soon as we had Huddersfield back pedalling, we scored.

Perhaps the stats are more meaningful if they consider did Anel play a full game.

Any team faced with a packed midfield/ defence needs players who have the ability to run at them and dribble through them.
We have Ndiaye and possibly Macatee: the former is more dangerous further forward and Macatee doesn’t play in every match, so we are left trying to go round the outsides, with only Khadra having the pace and trickery to do so
As you rightly point out it is not a problem when we go visiting as the opponents feel obligated to be more open and attack

Looking forward to Bogle getting back, maybe right midfield in front of George (when Berge is injured again).

Excellent stuff, mate.
Thanks for this.

It's the Norwood / Egan combo that worries me. They both have great elements to their games, but runners through the middle make a lot of ground and balls down the sides / over the top often catch us out. It's why I'm so keen for us to sign a mobile, holding midfielder in January.
Let's shut the gate when we're attacking!

We've definitely lost some scruffy points at home so far, especially when you consider we started so strong. I wonder if some of the top results have to do with greater motivation? Against Blackburn and Reading (who were top at the time), we would go above them with a win. Burnley was a six pointer. The crowd much more involved as well in those games.

Harder to get both fans and players excited by a game that should be a routine win?

Good work as always :)

I still think we're always trying to score the 'perfect' goal and, frankly, our shooting from range is abysmal. I'm not suggesting we should just shoot from anywhere, but if we could at least shoot on target, there would be chances created from rebounds. Saturday was another example of our constant failure to get the ball in the box early and instead we prat about with it on the edge of the box while the opposition defence gets themselves nice and set. We need to be putting the ball in while they are still recovering position. The Rotherham game was no different, loads of possesion outside their box and very few actual chances, attempts on goal or working their keeper.

It is a strange League this year. Some of the teams are currently in false positions - Middlesborough & WBA particularly are lower than they will finish QPR are falling like a stone and I don't think Blackburn will finish in the top 6 either
