Would he walk into our current team?
He wasn't as slow as Ray McSnail our midfielder in the mid 80s.I remember watching him play. He did walk about a lot yes.
There was a deadline day in 1979?! Here's me thinking this was a recent phenomenon.Crap left back signed from Ipswich on Deadline Day in 1979. Got crocked about a year later and retired through injury

We signed Len Allchurch on Deadline Day in 1961. We signed Jim Brown and Tony Field on DD in 1974, also John Cutbush in 1977, Bruce Rioch (on loan) in 1979. Dont know when DD was introducedThere was a deadline day in 1979?! Here's me thinking this was a recent phenomenon.
(Mmmmm, 1979, I wish I was back there now. The football was as shit but at least I'd have the B52s gig at the Limit to look forward to!)
He was actually our regular left back from his signing until the end of 79-80 and then played in midfield for most of 80-81. He played the first few games of 81-82 and then was indeed injured and retired at the end of that season. We gave him a testimonial v Ipswich in April 83.
My top Tibbott memory was in the game v Hull at the Lane on 20/12/80. Bob Hatton had put us 2 up only for Hull to get one back through an Edwards pen and be pressing for an equaliser. With about 15 mins left, Tibbott had the ball about 20 yards from the Hull goal and shot; the shot hit a defender which changed the shot's trajectory, but also took all the power off it. The goalie had gone right (where the shot was originally going) as the ball veered towards the left. The goalie realised the deflection had taken the ball to the other side of the goal and gave up and just lay where his rightward dive had taken him, assuming there was no way he could get to it now.
What he didn't realise, but what everyone on the ground could clearly see was that the ball was now only slowly tricking towards the goal and the goalie would have had time to turn round, sit down, have a fag and then scoop the ball up with his cap as it were. It actually went slowly over the line to put us 3-1 up and that's how it stayed.
Maybank chinned McPhail and got sent off.We signed Tibbott after Paul Garner was ruled out for a month after having his lung punctured in the 2-0 defeat at Brighton in the previous match
There's a sort of Germanic look about him. Bet he gegenpressed well in his day.
