Policing Costs

The club only pay for police officers 'inside' the ground, hence the increased use of stewards, any police officers deployed outside the ground comes out of the normal SYP budget, as it is a public place and not the responsibility of Sheffield United, anymore than policing the city centre on a Saturday night is.

That's some mighty poor reporting there - right down to the Star name-checking some internet site for providing the average attendances of the clubs it reports on week-in, week-out. Do they really not know what the average attendances of the local clubs are?
Clubs only pay for the policing within the footprints of their grounds so it's no surprise Wednesday's figure would be higher as they would have the biggest need for policing in the city centre etc with more away fans than United would ever have in League 1.
And if those figures are right, South Yorkshire Police have overcharged United and we're due a small rebate. Police can't charge for services they don't provide but the Star don't seem to have asked what's going on.

On the face of it is does look like United have had an unfair deal, but I'd bet it's more likely The Star have got their figures wrong. I don't see how Wednesday's policing costs can be that £430k while ours are only £170k.
Because we were playing clubs like Fleetwood where no police was necessary. We probably only had 5 home games where there was a demand for a reasonable police presence.
