Playing in front of 2000 fans

On Sunday we'll be playing in front of 2000 fans. Not including the games where no fans have been allowed, have we played in front of such a low crowd in the league? I'm guessing a Wimbledon away game during their later years?

We lost 1-0, Agyemang scored I think. I was 12, I didn't really want to be there and I think it was the coldest that I've ever been. It was just before the FA Cup semi versus Arsenal and I think Marcel Cas got seriously injured adding even more injury time on a freezing cold night.

Edit - just checked and it was actually Shipperley who scored for Wimbledon.

I was also at the same stadium 2 days earlier when we drew 2-2 against Palace. I was definitely brought up right!

It may not seem fair, but when the Lane opens up to fans again restricted to 2000, then the ticket allocation should go to the Kop season ticket holders only and keeping their own seats. The team needs as much vocal support as they can and will probably only get that from the Kop ticket holders. And before I'm questioned, No, I'm not one of them.

I've a sneaking suspicion social distancing might have something to say about that.

I don’t think that anyone should have been allowed back until everyone was, it creates an unfair advantage for those jn the lower tiers otherwise.

I am one of them, but obviously the club will choose to open the South Stand. Instead of the bloke behind me on the kop giving it full volume, there will be some sad twat with a tartan flask busy unwrapping a Werthers and moaning about people standing up.

2k fans is not football.

Nor is 4k, 6k, 8k etc etc.

I love United and have being going since 1970, but I don't want to attend some pastiche make-believe version of what I love.

I will go back when >20k are allowed.

It was Ben Doane who got injured that night, had to retire subsequently. He use to live in the village and play cricket at one of my old clubs

Having played with Ben at over 35’s and got to know him it’s really sad how much that tackle messed up a good chunk of his life.
Was a lovely footballer too, played centre mid and used to run every game.

Don't get your hopes up lads and lasses. We'll be in tier 3 for the forseeable. Despite Covid rates in South Yorkshire falling rapidly, and loads of places in London and Essex having far higher rates than us, the plan appears to be to do everything to keep London and the south east out of tier 3, including mass testing in schools- something that's happened nowhere else except Scouseland. In terms of football crowds, I'd be surprised if we're allowed any till next season. Soz!

In that case rather than select from the kop, they should hold auditions one on one. At the command 'sing' you pipe up with whatever Blades related chant you want but any pause, questioning or anything to buy time and you're out.

I was sceptical about attending if it was just 2/4K allowed back. I said I wouldn’t want to do that, and would rather wait until it was back to more normal levels.

However, seeing the fans back on MOTD last week changed my mind. It made a bigger impact than I thought and made me realise how much I miss going. I’d take it for now, just for something different to do!

Maybe the reality would be different once in the ground, but I’d give it a go now, despite my earlier thoughts.

We’re all Blades....Even the “tartan flaskers.” But I do agree we should all go back together. Southampton having fans in the ground when others can’t, is simply unfair.

i reckon the long term future is all stadia reduced to 50% capacity....so that’s 15.5K crowds max.

That's really sad Sheff. I'm not an armchair fan, and watching crowdless football on telly is no real experience at all. I have watched a lot of the games this season, mainly to support my lad, Esteemed Forgeblade, who lives by himself, and going to the game together is what we've done for nearly 25 years. Like many people, pub/match/pub is what we do, and what's happening now, and for some time to come (up here at least), is no substitute. I'm not a Northern soul fan, but "Keep the Faith " seems appropriate. UTB!

Agreed. Having a crowd against us (although not sure that S’oton have a particularly vociferous support) has been known to raise our players. Obviously nothing like our lot getting behind them but I have a feeling that it may just have a positive impact for us on Sunday . Will it be enough, who knows...?
