The “can play in midfield” player could easily be the striker (Burke).

I’m not fully believing Wilder on positions though. No real need for him to be giving any info on that front. He might as well keep the fact we’re signing Buendia secret.

No mention of midfielders coming in.

Slightly disappointed by this, on the face of it. Improving creativity and ball retention in the middle third of the pitch looked like priorities to me, this window.

But several weeks left. And we don’t know who these 5 are, yet. Fingers crossed.

You know, I get really frustrated about the kind of players that some fans feel we're able to sign as a club.

This thread goes some way to balancing it up!

LoughboroBlade also, its not the same as last season. There's not two players for every position in the midfield. Two for the left Osborn and Fleck, one for the middle Norwood, two for the right Berge and Lunny - assuming Lunny stays. I doubt that Slater is stepping up yet. So I think we're a bit light in there to be honest. Last season Besic came in, of course.

Norwood, Berge and Lundstram can all play CM. In fact it is all their preferred and best position.

Wilder seems enthusiastic that the players he anticipates bringing in will make us better than last year.
Last year we finished ninth with a v strong defence
Ramsdale is not that far behind Henderson, we retain the rest of the back five
Same midfield with better players up front
Cannot understand the despondency

Bloke off Twitter: "Wilder has said we're pursuing 5 players, thoughts on who they might be?"

Nixon: Sounds about right.

Yeah, sounds about right because Wilder literally said it ya fuckin pleb.
Probably gets paid a fair whack for that cutting edge analysis too.

Burke, Brewster and

Amen brother. I am surprised at how many seem to have decided that we can't possibly do as well last season.

Every season, I find myself wondering whether people have actually been watching how Wilder operates.

He doesn't go backwards. We will be pushing top 6 again.

What I'm getting at is that if Norwood is injured, Berge moves to the middle, but if Lunny's suspended who's gonna play RCM? You may think that its unlikely but I think we need two for every position, that's all i'm saying mate.

This sounds a little unconventional, maybe even mad but, Didzy at RCM.

It’s exactly the same amount of cover for Norwood as we ended the season with. With an extra centre-back expected to come in (presumably right sided) you’d also expect Rodwell to fill in at midfield in an emergency. We’re one down with Luke Freeman leaving, but that’s totally separate to the Norwood cover question.

We had Besic last season though also Loughboro. We've lost Freeman as well and just seem a bit light in there. Yes Rodwell can cover but he's not played a PL game in three years or so. I'm just a tad surprised, especially given that Lunny's situation is still not sorted, but maybe he's changes his mind.

I think most Blades agree that Berge was bought with a view to replacing Norwood at some point so quite sure CSW is happy to slot him in there and play Lunny at RCM if Norwood is unavailable.

LWB Rico Henry
RWB Roberts
CB Callum chambers (loan)
ST Burke
ST Dennis

Could actually see that being not far off the mark tbh apart from Chambers. RC had us in for him last summer and we all know CW doesn't give up on his targets even if it takes him a couple of windows. I really can't see him coming here on loan unless he was pretty much nailed on to start. He's perfect for the Bash role but that would be incredibly harsh on Bash after the season he had last year.

So I think the collective view is most of us have a slight stirring in the groin area after CW's post match interview earlier. He nailed what positions he's after (LWB, RWB, CB and 2 FW's) and that he expects 3 to come in by Monday/Tuesday with 2 being on international duty at present. He also stated that international loans may be a last minute job at the end of the window.

Based on his previous transfer strategy it's probably likely that the 2 international players will be from England, Scotland, Wales, NI or ROI unless there's a leftfield move in there so it's actually not that hard to break down who the targets may be.

I think it's pretty obvious one of the signings is Burke.

The 3rd player not on international duty could be anyone but wouldn't surprise me if it was Swift.

Also I wouldn't believe every word CW said re positions, players close. We could well see different positions and more players arrive as he plays he cards close to his chest normally.

San Marino V Liechtenstein in a few days might tell us more, the striker will have to give a weeks notice to the window cleaning round.
That hilarious joke has already been done about half a dozen times in this thread

Rodwell has played 3 times for England in midfield. Slater has played pre-season. Bash played there at Elland Road😁

International players from France, Italy, Belgium etc, or international players from San Marino, Gibraltar and Scotland etc?

I just think we need another but totally take your point on Bash. Rodwell's played for England but it was a while ago and hasn't played much football fo r a year or two. But maybe he will be class. Slater maybe needs another loan I would guess.

International players or not, It’s vague enough to mean they could be outstanding and improve the team, or just normal players to fill out the squad.

Not many in the home nations sides would walk into our starting 11 from Scotland, Ireland or Wales.
Bale....after that I’m struggling

Love how you've lumped Scotland in with San Marino and Co! I'd love a San Marino international!

I'd forgot about Brewster I think he's more likely than Dennis. And didn't Nixon say we were in for cabango at some point? I've not seen anything of him, is he any good?

We had Besic last season though also Loughboro. We've lost Freeman as well and just seem a bit light in there. Yes Rodwell can cover but he's not played a PL game in three years or so. Besic was long gone by the restart, and effectively out of the picture when Berge arrived. August to Jan we had 2 DCM options (Norwood & Besic) and 2 RCM options (Lundstram and Besic). For the restart you had 2 DCM options (Norwood & Berge) and 2 RCM options (Berge & Lundstram). 3 players covering two positions for both. There was a moment in Feb/March where we had 4 players covering two positions. If one of the defenders coming in are a midfield option as Wilder says, I don’t think we’re any weaker than we were in midfield. In fact with the rise of Osborn and Berge I think we’re probably stronger, even with Freeman departing.

Ryan Sessegnon maybe one, just saying anyone see his celebration after his goal for u21s? Was that meaning blades? Maybe wrong
