Not true. Hodgy never made a comeback after being replaced by Hope. Hope's replacement was McAllister.
I believe, from memory, that Hodgy did make a short comeback during (or at the end) of Hope's reign before fresh blood was brought in, perhaps McAllister or Jim Brown. Hodgy was then the 2nd team coach.

Further research from the Hodgy biography will be carried out.

Back to the OP point, John Hope's darker days and Derek Richardson were the worst goalkeepers that I saw play for United.

Barry Hayles was a great disappointment in his time at the lane, particularly after having a blinder for Fulham against us in his previous appearance at the Lane.

I'm positive Hodgkinson never played again after getting dropped for Hope.

You'd have to have been a proper whiffer to have been excited about Maxime Chamot.

You must have missed Lee Baxter's 45 minutes at Burnley...

We've had some real numpties between the sticks. Paul Tomlinson comes to mind. The present encumbent is right up there as well...

This thread would be a lot shorter if we had to list the genuine top of the tree talent we've ever had. And when I say genuine top of the tree talent, I mean just that, not ordinary players who looked ok whilst playing for us in our unique Blaayyyhhhddeess Waahhyyy

Currie
Woodward
Shaw
Hagan
Gillespie
Needham
K Walker

That's seven I can think of in about a bajillion years of Sheffield United history
Anybody got any more ?

James Beattie (1st time round)?

And in the "They were utter gash" column, I'd respectfully suggest one Mr. Brian Howard. Came on as a sub, had 35 minutes where he looked like the solution to the CMF issue, with attacking intent, the ability to disguise a pass, combined with the ability to actually find a teammate, and generally seems like a decent buy for the £500k or so we gave the Sister-shaggers for him....

... and who turned out to be utter, utter, utter wank in the long-run.

Another Blackwell signing where you thought 'how is he going to fit in?'

.

I am afraid Hodgy's biography has quite a lot of errors. His ghost writer was Les Scott who is a Stoke fan who doesn't really know much about the Blades. One example he wrote a long story about George Best scoring against him in Man U's 3-0 win at Bramall Lane in October 1967. The scorers in that match were Brian Kidd, Denis Law and John Aston. The only time George Best scored a goal in a competitive match at Bramall Lane was in Boxing Day 1964 (they won 1-0)

Quite. There's errors on virtually every page.

Touchy bastard with a shit memory.
MMMM
Correct, I watched Hodgy play in a reserves match shortly after he was dropped from the 1st team (last competitive match was the 2-1 defeat at Bolton (who finished bottom of the table) on 16th Jan 1971) but McAlister soon replaced Hodgy in the reserves team and was always playing for the reserves until he was given a league debut in the 0-0 draw at Ipswich . Hope was dropped along with Woody after the 4-0 home defeat to Derby the previous week. In Hope's first game for our reserves he injured his knee badly and was carried off. He was out injured for a very long time. Meehan (dont remember him) played in goal for our reserves n the first few weeks of the 1971-72 season until we signed John Connaughton from Man U. Connaughton was our reserves keeper for a year until McAlister's leg was broken by Rodney Marsh in October 1973. Connaughton's 1st team debut for us was in the 1-0 defeat at Liverpool (his dropped catch led to Kevin Keegan's goal). Hope returned to reserves action on the same day as Connaughton's debut at Liverpool. Connaughton got dropped after the 2-2 home draw against Spurs. Hope's return to the 1st team was in the 2-1 win at Burnley but he played only 7 more games before making way for new signing Jim Brown (easily our best keeper from the 1970s decade but a dimwit chose Steve Conroy in the 1970s team at the 125th year anniversary awards)
So did Hodgy play for the 1st team after Hope had played ?

No. His last competitive match was the 2-1 defeat at Bolton in 16th January 1971 (I was there), his last 1st team game was the 1-0 friendly defeat at Chesterfield (Fenoughty scored in the 1st minute) on 23rd January 1971. I saw him play in the reserves on 13th February 1971 (1st team won 2-0 at Charlton) and I don't think he played many reserves matches after this one (McAlister then played for our reserves for about a year)

p.s do you remember when we whooped Ipswich 7-0, the little guy on the pavillion putting up the scores didnt know what to do as it only had space for 5 goals

Look in Clareborough's Complete Records book
well, i have not heard of that one b4, but i will look. BTW if there are any Blades in Spain who have bin lids, i have a box of old programs going back years i am willing to give to a good Blades fan home, also got some Hendrix bootlegs on orange and pink vinyl.

Anyone remember any ?

Turn it on its head of who S6 thought were shite and actually did something.

S6 turning down Cantona because Trevor Francis had not seen him play on grass.

S6 turning down Vardey as they thought £5m from Leicester was too much when offered to them by Pearson

Apologies , but thank fuck it wasn't us .

I heard the pigs had a deal lined up for candy for a lot less than that but it fell through when Pearson went

Craig Beattie is surely worth a mention truly useless probably 1 of the reasons we loat 09 play off final as he was so invisible ee might as well had 10 men. Couldn't hit a barn door if it slapped him in the face. I would say even porter or higdon were better
