Just looking at the recently departed Matt Hill's record and he played close to 100 times for us in all competitions but never found the back of the net.

Who else played a significant number of matches but never scored?

Bill Cook played 300+ outfield games in a fifteen year period ending in 1927 and never scored. I think that's the biggest drought from an outfield player.

John Pemberton never scored either, but like Nilsen he scored in a penalty shoot out.

Tom Cowan and Brian Smith were other non scorers who played a fair bit.

Out of our current players Stephen McGinn has the most appearances without scoring, 36 in all competitions.

Hill scored one of the Wembley penalties v Huddersfield.

There is an even more select subset - players who never scored for us and never scored for anyone else either.

Step forward Marcus Williams.

According to a source I have, George Green beats Bill Cook. Here's three others with many games and no goals (not goalkeepers).

George Green (1923-34) 438 appearances EDIT (His wiki says he scored 10 goals so I'm not sure now ! He did win the FA Cup and played for England though.)

Len Birks (1924-31) 220 appearances

Tom Johnson (1930-41) 212 appearances (son of Harry snr and brother of Harry jnr. Harry junior is of course our all time top scorer !)

Len and Tom never scored for any other club either.

No doubt a proper statistician can put this right if the source is wrong !

Ah yes, Green beats Cook!

It is odd that Tom Johnson didn't score as his brother Harry is of course our all time record scorer.

I don't know the numbers but wasn't lee sandford famous for having never scored for us?

whoops, 5 in 183 according to wiki

He scored a few:

7/9/96 Oldham (A)
13/2/98 Reading (h) - last minute winner in the cup
23/11/99 Port Vale (h) the notorious game
25/11/00 Bolton (H)

There may be 1 or 2 others

I'm pretty sure Justin Edinburgh only scored two career goals, one each for Spurs and Portsmouth.... Both against us!

EDIT - Just checked, i'm correct.

3-1 win at home to Hudders in 1996=97

Bill Cook lived in Hebburn throughout his Blades playing career but after retiring from football he and his family moved to live in Sheffield which is rather strange! Dont know how long were his train journeys from Hebburn when he plays in matches! as for training, he must have had an agreement with the club to train at his local club

Roger Nilson.
I always said one day he would have broken the net with one of his piledriving efforts, but never came off.

Laurens ten heuvel, never scored after a big build up about his goalscoring prowess, played for 5 English clubs including us, never bagged for any of them

Didn't he score about 3 in his first two games and never scored again?

Players who never scored but did in a shoot-out is a good sub category. Any advance on:

Matt Hill
John Pemberton
Roger Nilsen?

I remember when won away on penalties with a bunch in kids in the League Cup, did any of them not score a senior goal?

Patterson did score for us.i remember it in a 3,or 4 nil win against???????i cant remember!

Pretty sure he also scored for us in a draw where Kevin Francis got the other - smallest guy on the pitch getting a header, tallest scoring with his feet.

Ullathorne got none in 3 seasons for us, but don't think he got more than 50 games in that time if that.

Also.......Gooooooooooooooooose!
