Players who never scored for us

My dad and I noticed at the time that Ullathorne hadn't scored (maybe he was the only outfield player in the team/squad who hadn't), so we nicknamed him Hattrick Rob. The 'Hattrick' title has often been passed along if anyone else is worthy of it, so from this thread it seems it should be Hattrick Steve McGinn at the moment!

Ullathorne once bagged one for Norwich in one of the highest scoring Premier League matches.

09/04/94 Norwich 4-5 Southampton

Dave Kitson also scored for Reading in the highest ever scoring Premier League match and twice in the joint second highest scoring Premier League match.

29/09/07 Portsmouth 7-4 Reading
29/12/07 Tottenham 6-4 Reading

Also, Beagrie and Windass scored for Bradford in this belter.

12/02/00 West Ham 5-4 Bradford

Cullip scored against Villa in the Cup. He also scored a perfectly good goal at Arsenal in the 5th round which was disallowed for no reason.

Hayles never scored before he was dumped after 4 games, and replaced with noted goal machine Ashley Ward.

There is also the now annual tradition of signing a loan striker from a higher division who plays a dozen or so games and fails to score:

2012: O'Halloran
2013: Poleon
2014: Paynter

Who will it be next year? My money's on Billy Sharp.

There's also 2011: Marcus Bent.

I'm pretty sure Justin Edinburgh only scored two career goals, one each for Spurs and Portsmouth.... Both against us!

EDIT - Just checked, i'm correct.

Now that is just our luck!

And I saw both of them.

The Spurs match - wasn't that the one where Pembo went in goal? 2-2 wasn't it? Darren? Silent?

And the Pompey one was a corner that came in from the right, passed everyone into the centre of the goal and Edinburgh got a foot to it.

Just MY luck.

It was 2-2 but pemberton did not go in goal. That was against Liverpool earlier that season. We came back from 2-0 down to draw with Spurs.

The only time Pembo went in goal was in the 3-1 defeat at home to Liverpool in Aug 1990. Tracey played throughout the 2-2 draw against Spurs in april 1991

Stand corrected Silent and Revs.

I remember standing on the JSS lower for the Spurs match. JEs goal was at the BL end I think. I think Andy Walker scored for us.

I was at the 'Ian Rush breaks Trace's cheekbone' game as well. Felt reyt sorry for Trace because he was off his line dead quick and down at Rushy's feet to get the ball. Rush did it and walked away and didn't offer much sympathy even when it was obvious Trace was in a bit of a mess and was stretchered off. Recall the third goal going in in that game and Pembo flapping hopelessly at the ball.

I was there with my sister and my niece (sister of Tongy's ex-bird) who went on to marry (and divorce) Tim Shaw of many radio and TV shows (including that car one on Sky at the moment)

Andy Walker joined us in 1996. In that 2-2 draw at home to Spurs in April 1991, Paul Walsh scored the other goal for Spurs. Paul Beesley reduced the arrears with a header before Deano's last minute lob over Thorsvedt

This was my first ever match as a six year old. Edinburgh's goal was definitely at the Lane end - all four goals came in the second half.

Don't think Chris Short ever scored (not that it was his primary job) for us, he must have played 40/50 games.

Andy Barnsley?

Chris Kamara?

Tom Cowan?

Don't think Claude Davis scored, but he probably only played about 20 games.

Short scored at Leicester when we lost 4-2 in the promotion season. None of the others you mention scored though.

He scored a few:

7/9/96 Oldham (A)
13/2/98 Reading (h) - last minute winner in the cup
23/11/99 Port Vale (h) the notorious game
25/11/00 Bolton (H)

There may be 1 or 2 others

I'm pretty sure Sandford scored a bizarre goal at Fratton Park from a left wing cross in the infamous "linesman get's twatted" game in 1998 - or did it go down as a goalkeeper own goal ??

It was recorded as an own goal by Alan Knight. It was a big looping high cross and Knight made a real mess of it and pushed it in his own net.

I'm pretty sure (but haven't looked at the stats) that the 'great' Johan Cruyff never actually scored for the Blades .......... useless !!

Is Rhian Brewster the striker that has played the most ever matches for us but never scored a league goal?

It'll be 30 league games if he plays but fails to score against Huddersfield on Saturday.

In total, he has now gone 400 days without a league goal since he scored for Swansea against Reading in July 2020.

Don’t disrespect my star boy. He’s our top scorer😂

Pedro Veron yes uncle of Jaun, not sure if he ever progressed from the reserves,he did score an absolute stunner in a testimonial game, high ball in, controlled on his chest and hit a volley on the half turn into the top corner from about 30 yards
