Players who initially impressed but then turned out pants.

A long term saga, played out over a number of years/forums, whereby a couple of players (of which Brian Howard is one) may not be mentioned without raising the blood pressure to unacceptable levels.

Hahaha fair enough :D Can't you ask Foxy to ban his name with the profanity filters mate? :-)

While we're on about Lee's, how about Lee Hendrie ?

Lazy, self-aggrandising, diiirty hobbit.

Brian Howard, at least he kept David Carney out of the team.

When it comes down to it, i seriously do not think i have seen a worse player than that imbecile. The Australian David Beckham!!!!!

i had him down as crap when he rocked up with f*ckin blue boots .. blue boots ffs

I think this could be the start of another thread;

players who wore blue boots.

Lee Martin, what was that kid all about, I can't actually remember him doing anything of any note while at UTD.

so much so I can only remember him for his blue boots at the sty

Does Scott Marshall count? Thought he was great for us on loan and was convinced he'd replace Adams when he retired. That loan spell ended up being his only consistent spell in a team in the top two divisions. He's now caretaker boss at Villa following Lambert's sacking.

I wrote to Bassett within the year he was with us suggesting we should sign Marshall, and Jostein's brother Tore Andre from Norway. He wrote back saying we enquired about both - Arsenal had high hopes for Marshall, so didn't want to sell, while Flo was 'too expensive'. Not sure if that was more than we were able to pay, or more than we were willing, but when he went to Chelsea a couple of years later it was for £300,000, which seems fairly low.

I was thinking about Marshall after his Villa appointment. He played pretty well for us throughout his loan spell. His career did not go well afterwards.

Wikipedia says he was the last Scot to play for Arsenal.

300K for Tore Andre was not a lot, but Bassett was telling you he was too expensive in 1995: that's probably true. We were skint then.

Simon Francis (Everybody loved that we'd signed him as we beat the wendies to him. He was sh@t)

Erik Tonne

Gareth Bale. I know he didn't play for us but he had an awful record at Spurs. Something like 20 games before he tasted victory in a spurs kit

He signed for Chelsea as a Bosman player, then Brann chose to let him go 6 months prior to that for a fee of about £300,000. Prior to this there had been bids of £3-4m.

When you wrote to Bassett Tore Andre was probably at Tromsø, or even Sogndal, meaning he would possibly have been available for a reasonable fee.

Willie Falconer. Scored on debut (v Swindon at the Lane I recall) in the PL, then disappeared down Jamie Hoylands trapdoor!
The worst player I have ever seen for Utd.
Who was that centre half who had a good game at Highbury in the cup and thought he was the legend of the Lane only to fall out with Warnock and get transferred into obscurity ?

Danny Culip?

I think Marshall was with us late '94 or early '95 and I'd have written probably before the end of that season. I remember that Bassett was gone by the end of the same year, so looks like Flo would have been at Tromsø. Missed opportunity! :-)
