McBurnie was joint top scorer that's his return. Also he's only been here one season. We wanted Maupay last season of course, and I dare say he would have adapted quicker than McBurnie to the PL but then we missed out on him so its not as if we didn't try. So we go for another top Championship player in McBurnie. It's not the late 80's when we signed players for peanuts and make them into England Internationals! We could develop players in League One like Fleck but they need to hit the ground running in the Prem. They cost more and with it the risk is higher if they don't make the grade.

I know the Maupay vs McBurnie thing has been done to death, but I still remain unconvinced that Maupay would suit us. Have you seen the number of shots he takes? He's a shoot on sight type and we're anything but that.

Agree with a what a few have pointed out though, loads on the failed list hade played a part in getting us to where we are now, including :
-Madine
-Hanson
- Lee Evans
-Freeman
- Jay Oshea
-Robinson (Chelsea away, Man U at home)

Even Washington played some part in a minor way. He scored a big goal away (I think it was Brentford) and his pace regularly helped see out a game. We also don't see how they affect others in the squad. I.e. Is Fleck better due to Freeman pressure, etc etc.

I'm not losing it completely. He did start away at Brentford in a 3-2 victory, setting one up and putting in a decent performance.

We've had a few posts of a similar nature on transfers and merits of those that haven't made the grade. The posts weren't necessarily on individual thread, granted. But what is the point in this thread?! Talk about glass half full! We've got promoted twice in three years, spending very little to do that and the manager had to sell a few good players along the way that would have certainly helped like Brooks, Calvert-Lewin, and Che Adams and people point out those that didn't make the grade! The only thing that matters is the big picture, and Wilder has brought us PL football and we're now in a fantastic positon, but oh no Carrurthers, Ched and Chis Hussey wern't good enough were they, and how much did they cost!?

I suspect it’s a reaction to the attempts by a number of posters to silence any negative thoughts about our signings with the argument that our manager is so good that each signing must be a good one.

In Chris' case, you need to look at how many players have we wasted a lot of money on versus how many players have not cost a lot of money but gone on to be important players for us.

Can't agree that Hanson & Madine were failures. They were brought in to do a job, did that job, to a greater or lessor extent, and were then sold. To me that shows a manager who knows what is needed at the time and gets it done. UTB

I didn't know that such an exercise in silencing the fan base was in play.

I still think it's a shit thread but plenty seem to want to play so perhaps I should quietly leave them to it

Apart from the stupid sending off against Brentford, I though Madine was excellent. Good touch for a big lad. Both he and Hanson suffered from what I call target man syndrome. Whenever we play with one of these, it seems that the rest of the team resort to lumping it high to them and we become one-dimensional. Happened at Oxford in League One. First half, the players just kept lumping it to Hanson and although he tried, it wasn't working. Second half, Lavery replaced him and the players had to play it on the deck and we came back to win 3-2.

Happened in a few games last season with McBurnie.

O'Shea does not deserve to be anywhere near this list. Played well and scored some important goals in the League 1 run in, Oldham away won us a point, Swindon away put us back in the lead at 3-2 (after a dreadful error by their keeper) and Port Vale away.

The Evans one is harsh too. He was probably the best we could get at the time at fairly short notice following the injury to Coutts. He wasn't bad, perhaps just a bit slow for our way of playing. Scored two memorable goals v Boro but harsh to blame him for our late season dip. He seems worse because Norwood was such a massive upgrade on him.

Ben Heneghan is one that didn't work out. Came as one with potential but never fulfilled it. Now getting regular games (and pelters) at Blackpool.

I'd chuck in the possibility that Woodburn made Duffy up his game even more. There are others too.

Just what I thought. Why would we wait until we’re on the eve of a brand new season and a week when several new players have come through the door to put out this little moral sapping dig fest? I don’t get it. Maybe something to chew over at the end of the season or during lockdown but just hours before a new Premier League Season dawns? Nah.
