Players that Chris signed/loaned that never did owt for us.

We've had a few posts of a similar nature on transfers and merits of those that haven't made the grade. The posts weren't necessarily on individual thread, granted. But what is the point in this thread?! Talk about glass half full! We've got promoted twice in three years, spending very little to do that and the manager had to sell a few good players along the way that would have certainly helped like Brooks, Calvert-Lewin, and Che Adams and people point out those that didn't make the grade! The only thing that matters is the big picture, and Wilder has brought us PL football and we're now in a fantastic positon, but oh no Carrurthers, Ched and Chis Hussey wern't good enough were they, and how much did they cost!?

There's definitely a pattern with Chris's signings. Hanson did a job, a job that was needed at that time. We had no plan B and bringing him in gave us a different option. It was exactly the same with Madine. Signed in January to give us that different option. It helped to get us over the line. It's a different kettle of fish in the prem. We need plans A, B, C and D. With the signings Chris is making (and looking to make) we are progressing in the right way here. Now more pace and power up front is required. We are work in progress to establish ourselves as a solid PL club, but progress is definitely being made. ⚔⚔⚔
 
I think several named on this thread would feel hard done by. While there were a few duds, most contributed in some form at their respective levels.

What is interesting is I can't think of any that have left the club and gone onto better things, which highlights that CWAK really do get the best out of players. Robinson may be an exception as he's now got an opportunity to play in a more natural wider position.
 



Michael Verrips for me, he only ever started one match and that was against Flyde in the Fa Cup.
He got injured after around 20 minutes, his signing hasn't turned out how a lot of people thought it would.
 
The thing to remember here is that Wilder usually signs at least 3 or 4 players every transfer window. There is usually one dud in there, but that is just the law of percentages, more often than not the 3 or 4 players strengthen us overall. Even the best managers sign duds, it is the way of the world.

How much have McBurnie and Callum cost us?
For what return?
 
I think for me Chris Hussey was the most bewildering one, but Verrips is coming up on the rails

Rose tinted specs and to think some thought Madine could do a job in the Prem
Evans was good at passing sideways, save for the odd shot

Madine did fine, but in no way was he a Prem striker. Somewhat telling that he ended up at Blackpool, good signing for them though

Theres me thinking Gary Madine made 16 appearances during a pivotal part of the season, scoring 3 goals, helping us to promotion.
Evans came in and was part of a midfield that was in an evolution - yes we upgraded by he enabled us to continue with our style of play and scored a couple of cracking goals.

Its not rose tinted specs to say two players contributed to our team. Thats a bizarre thing to say.

Our away form improved a lot after the signings of Madine and Dowell. We were a play off team due to our away form before then, rather than a genuine automatic promotion challenger. Dowell allowed us to counter attack more effectively, and Madine gave us somebody who we could go into earlier to build the counter attacks. A different tool in the toolbox.Inspired business. With Hanson we effectively countered the low block that every single team was adopting at that point in the season to increasing success. They were getting murdered when they attempted to out football us, had learned their lesson and had resorted to eleven men behind the ball.

At the time Coutts was out injured there was nobody else in the squad who could fulfil that position so Wilder got the best that was available with in our costs structure until better ( Norwood) was available.

McBurnie was joint top scorer that's his return. Also he's only been here one season. We wanted Maupay last season of course, and I dare say he would have adapted quicker than McBurnie to the PL but then we missed out on him so its not as if we didn't try. So we go for another top Championship player in McBurnie. It's not the late 80's when we signed players for peanuts and make them into England Internationals! We could develop players in League One like Fleck but they need to hit the ground running in the Prem. They cost more and with it the risk is higher if they don't make the grade.
