Which player, from history, do you really wish United had signed?

We famously missed out on Maradona. We had Tore Andre Flo training with us before his move to Chelsea. While across the city, Wednesday missed out on signing Cantona.

So what other near-misses have we had and who do you think we ought to have looked at in the past?

You have to think what might have been if Maradona would have signed for United. I think it's very likely that we would be an established Premiership side.

When the late Jimmy Sirrel was manager, he was offered this Sauchie born, gangly kid playing for Partick Thistle for £50,000. This was a bit of a fee for the mid-70s for a teenager not long into the top division in Scotland.

After a bit of consideration and watching him a few times, Jimmy decided not to sign him........I often wonder what happened to that Alan Hansen!!

Just like Forest, we told a young Shaun Wright-Phillips that he wasn't tall enough to make it in the professional game. Whoops.

Also at the start of the Premier League season Warnock and McCabe said no to a certain Marco Materazzi because his wages would have been too high! He then just went and won the World Cup and stuck with Inter. :o

Juan Sebastian Veron?

'My uncle played for Sheffield United'

I particularly like this bit...

"But my abiding memory of Pedro was the prank he pulled before he left. The Yorkshire and Humberside Cup - or whatever it was called then - was a local competition that both United and Wednesday used to enter. Often they both made the final and would play in front of crowds of 50,000. Anyway, Verde's claim to fame from his time here is that after winning the Cup he nicked the bloody trophy! People at the club are pretty sure that when he buggered off back to Argentina he took it with him because it's never been seen since.'

.... I assume they mean John Garrett as well. Certainly reads like a quote from him!

Is he that player they have crossed with a footballer (Veron) and a really fast car (Veyron)? :D ;)

I noticed it before you posted :D

My excuse is that I'm brain dead today.

Meant to be writing about "carbon footprints" but I've just read my work back through and there are numerous cases of "carbon footballs".

During the close season in the mid-70s, we were looking for the finishing touch to what was looking to be a team that would challenge and compete for trophies. We needed a centre-forward to aide and compliment Bill Dearden. The club agreed a fee of £100,000 for the player concerned and went into negotiations with him regarding wages. A deal couldn't be reached as the club were concerned about paying such high wages for an ageing forward...so Francis Lee signed for eventual champions Derby County, we spent 100 grand on a carthorse called Guthrie and got relegated!!

It was wrote in red crayon though, which may have discredited it somewhat :D

Ha ha ha, comedy genius!

Hasselbaink in our Premiership season.

He signed for Charlton instead because he wanted to stay in London. I think we'd have stayed up if we'd got him to be honest.
