We’ve got trips to London planned in July and there are no direct trains on Saturdays even in July due to rail works.Rail engineering works are often planned years in advance and scheduled when the required equipment/teams are available - The current midland mainline upgrades are scheduled over a number of weekends (9/10 I think) and so when planned years ago it wouldn't have been justifiable to move the whole schedule on the off chance a Sheffield team (or Derby/Forest/Leicester) were in the play off final this year.
If they could only plan engineering works on weekends when nothing is happening in London their options of when to do the work would be incredibly limited.
