Thats from the 0-1 defeat on 21/10/72. Note that Badger is wearing the no.8 shirt. That is because he was injured at the start of that season and Steve Goulding came in as right back. Harris must have been impressed by Goulding as, when Badger was fit, he kept Goulding at RB and slotted Badger in in midfield.

A pretty rare occassion i am sure, but why isnt the picture facing the south stand, rather than the side of the lane where there isnt a stand

For some reason, all the ones of the penalties were taken facing the "building" site

I was on the kop that day, there were a couple of drunk everton fans in front of me, when they scored the daft pillocks jumped up to celebrate, the 'Silly-Born-Twats' got a right hammering, it made me feel physicaly sick seeing all the fists and feet going in..

If I remember rightly, Goulding hit the bar in that game and Ian Holmes had a goal disallowed for offside. Neither managed to ever score a real goal for United.

If I remember rightly, Goulding hit the bar in that game and Ian Holmes had a goal disallowed for offside. Neither managed to ever score a real goal for United.

Yes, that is right. Ian Holmes had thought he scored for us in the 1st minute. The linesman had his flag up and then put it down and Holmes raced away to place the ball under Everton's keeper David Lawson at the Kop end. Everton players appealed that the linesman had briefly put his flag up so the ref came over to discuss with the linesman on why he had put his flag up. The ref then decided to disallow the goal for offside. Steve Goulding's effort that hit the bar at the BL end in the 2nd half caused Blades fans to debate whether the ball had crossed the line after it had hit the bar. On the following Monday there was a feature on Calendar tv programme about Blades fans from Scandivanian countries making the trip to the match

Jim Montgomery of Sunderland made several brilliant saves in the 1971 match that was played under heavy rain. One of the finest goalkeeping displays I have ever seen at the Lane. It was rare to see Ted Hemsley making a decisive header and running into the box and it was enough for it to go past Montgomery for the only goal of the game. Not long after the goal, Sunderland hit back with a fine angled shot by Gordon Harris but John Hope brilliantly dived full length to push the ball past the post
