Many thanks for all the replies,, a note on the back stated End April 75, but that's usually refers to the date it was going to be used in one of the papers and not the date of the game. Given our fixtures opponents colours at that time it was either Liverpool or Arsenal and that's clearly Highbury (31st March 1975)

Just look at that fucking player.

What I'd give to see him in Lunny's position on Saturday.

Colchester (a) in the 1981/2 season . It was on MOTD. Lost 5-2. Only lost 3 more times that season .... Hull away ( Edwards scored for them, scored for us the week after) Stockport (a) on a Monday night , and I'm buggered if I can remember the other defeat Silent Blade
I was present at the Colchester away game, just before kick off the ref decided the blue stripes clashed with our red and I guess we had no away shirts with us we borrowed their away shirt which I believe was a dark maroon colour, can't remember if we played in our own shorts, mind say, we were that pissed we were all thinking what a great away strip, until late on someone noticed the badge.
Terrible away day, just glad to say we didn't have many that season

I was only a kid at the time so I've no recollection of his tackling and tracking back, but as he was a 'forrud', I fear the worse.

That said, what a player and a hero to a young lad. I was there when he got 4 against Ipswich and absolutely loved the bloke.

RIP.

I didn't have the pleasure of seeing him smack Ipswich about that day.

Did see him in other games though, met him personally and worshipped him as an athlete and a player. Whenever we scored a worldy in the yard at GVSS it was followed by the cry, "Wood-wood!" In the manner of a commentator like Keith Macklin or Hugh Johns.

In our team he would be the engine room. Pair him up with Berge (who has bits of his old foil TC in him) and we'd launch teams like Villa, Leeds and Fulham.

People might correct me, but I don't ever recall Woody having a bad game, even when we lost.

Maybe I go back a bit further than you Pommps....
In his early days Woody wasn't keen on rough arsed full backs giving him stick and often 'hid'.
A young Emlyn Hughes in his Blackpool days hit Woody hard early on and fished him out of his pocket on the final whistle.
Thankfully, that side of his game disappeared as the 60's drew to a close.
No finer sight than Woody in full flight!

Yep. He certainly learned the bloke's game later on, gained some mass (mainly in those massive legs) and started to impose himself on the game and his opponents

The original kit was one we "borrowed" from the military of the time, standard issue kit. It was described as white shirt and dark shorts and socks and my understanding is that it was a mixture of black, but mainly navy blue shorts. We looked more like England than Derby County.

Great ‘before’ photo. Looks like Reg could have cleared it! Looks like Hateley from Villa and I can see Graham Shaw, Hodgy, Badger and Richardson(?) across the two pics. Thinks it’s at Villa Park from the 64/65 season?

Before my time but what was Mathewson like - not sure he was a regular.

April 1965, we lost 2-1. Not Len Badger, it was Ken Mallender
