Penalty Shoot-Outs

I've just watched the penalties from last night and was surprised how little 'putting off' there was from the home fans behind the goal. Usually there's all sorts of noise and movement trying to distract the opposition.

Even Wednesdayites know it's unwise to jump and move around a lot, when one has a large turd resting in their undies.

Simon Tracey the hero that night in December. Played Newcastle next?

That's correct. Tracey had made a mistake with their goal, but made up for it in the shoot-out. I have no idea why the third round was placed in December that year.

Penalty shoot outs are great for the team that wins but misery for the team that loses. A bit of a lottery at the best of times. Wouldn't it be fairer to have the golden goal? i.e. if it's 0-0 after 90 minutes then the teams play extra time until one team scores a goal in open play. At least that's scoring a goal in proper play so less of a lottery.

Fine in theory but in our 2012 play off final it would have been the 'Turd Goal' principle. Both us and Udders would still be playing now with no sign of a goal coming.

11th September 2001, didn't we lose to Grimsby on penalties? It wasn't the most important thing to happen that day though.

That's right, Nickelback released the seminal dad rock masterpiece Silver Side Up.

The Arsenal game? Surely not?

I have a hazy recollection we had a keeper on the bench that night and for some reason chose not to sub him in at the end of ET. I may of course be wrong...

Danny Haystead apparently according to Soccerbase. Am I alone in having no recollection of him at all?

Warnock asked some of the senior players what they thought to the idea. Kenny was injured and (going on memory now so could be wrong) I think our other goalkeeper (Phil Barnes?) had been signed after the first game making him ineligible. Was another keeper unavailable as well?

So it came down to play Kenny even though he was nowhere near fit enough, play some young kid or stick Jags in!

The Blackburn 1993 game will live long in the memory for me. Coming from behind twice, that game really ebbed and flowed. One of those nights of real high drama and frayed nerves. Absolute pandemonium when we'd won the shoot-out and random embraces with fellow Blades. Loved it.
