Once it went to penalties, I knew the pork would lose, they are useless in penalty shoot-outs.

Before Foxy or Linz hit the move thread button, I wanted to look at our own record in shoot-outs. It's not too bad.

Ones I can recall without looking it up are :

Won v Blackburn, FA Cup Quarter Final 1993
Won v Coventry, FA Cup Quarter Final 1998
Lost v Huddersfield, Play-off Final 2012
Won v Bristol Rovers, Watney Cup Final 1974?
Lost v Arsenal, FA Cup 5th Round 2004?? (hard to remember as it seemed like we played them every year for a while!)
Won v West Ham, FA Cup 4th Round.... can't remember year even though I was there!
Won v West Ham, League Cup 2nd Round, 2014/5?

Still vividly remember the brilliant scenes in 1993 and 1998.

Any more?

From our League One stay you're missing:

League Cup
Burton (H) L4-5 August 2012
Hartlepool (A) W4-3 August 2011

Checkatrade/Johnstone's Paint Trophy
Leicester U23s (H) L4-5 August 2016
Scunthorpe (A) W5-3 September 2013
Coventry (A) L1-4 November 2012

The more I think about our shootout loss to Huddersfield, the more I get pissed off with the system. How in fucking hell is it fair to take 11 penalties, us shooting second, all in front of their fans? If EVER there was a solid case for reforming the sequence, we are it.

Should we end up in a theoretical penalty shootout right now, who'd take one?
Obviously Sharp and Coutts would have one but then who? I can't think of anyone else either taking one or striking me as a good penalty taker other than Fleck, who missed against Leicester reserves.

Hopefully we get autos next year so we don't have to rely on it :p

I've just watched the penalties from last night and was surprised how little 'putting off' there was from the home fans behind the goal. Usually there's all sorts of noise and movement trying to distract the opposition.

11th September 2001, didn't we lose to Grimsby on penalties? It wasn't the most important thing to happen that day though.

Didn't Huddersfield miss all their first 3 penalties ? And we still couldn't come out on top after 5 penalties. Not sure that penalty shoot out proved any case for reforming the sequence.

Other shootouts I remember:

Losing at home to Arsenal in the FA Cup - Paddy didn't get near to one.

Notts County ages ago (91 ish maybe?) in what I think was the ZDS cup. Cannot remember who won but it seemed to go on forever with everyone missing.

Edit: just seen Arsenal one in OP.

They did, worst pen shootout in history. Plus we still have to pay for Simmo putting through the windows on the international space station.

From our current team, my pick would be:

1. Fleck
2. Basham
3. Freeman
4. Coutts
5. Sharp

Maybe they were on their phones?

I remember the Arsenal one in the cup well. Paddy was injured that night and could only dive one way so the Arsenal players put each penalty the other way. I reckon we'd have stood a better chance putting Jags in goal.

Having lost the PO Final to Huddersfield, if I'm not mistaken the defeat to Burton in the League Cup was our next competitive match as it was played before the League season started. This meant we lost two consecutive matches on penalties. Has this ever happened before?

They did, granted, but that was followed by 13 successful penalties - the difference between the pressure each of our takers faced and the pressure Huddersfield faced cannot be laughed off, IMO.

Jags was close to starting that game in net which would have been quite incredible.

The Arsenal game? Surely not?

I have a hazy recollection we had a keeper on the bench that night and for some reason chose not to sub him in at the end of ET. I may of course be wrong...
