Pemberton's Somersault Throw In

I have an abiding memory of him cocking it up once and looking a pillock. Think he got booked for a challenge immediately after he landed on his arse, through temper embarrassment and frustration.

It used to be so much fun watching United!
 
First half of our midweek home game against West Ham in August 1991. Pembo's somersault throw was from John St side attacking the Lane End, the delivery wasnt right so he ran towards the Hammers player who received the throw in and kicked him. There was a mini scuffle that Vinnie Jones (with a head sweatband) got heavily involved. Not sure about bookings
 
I don't remember that. I remember Steve Watson doing it at Newcastle. Didn't Dave Challinor do the same at Tranmere?

I remember this as well. Petulant and hilarious.

From memory he picked the ball up looking all cocky, took the run up, somersaulted with grace and power...and threw the ball about two feet in front of him.

Don't know that he ever tried it again. :)

I think the idea originated in the States. There was a clip on some TV programme that started doing the rounds.
 
You do all realise that if it was pre Premier league then it didn't happen....

Brilliant! I was at that match. How can you recall all this information? Great memory you have. I can't even remember what I did yesterday!
 
I remember Pembo`s throw vividly, west ham were chopping our lads all night and were ready for a scrap, but we had players who could look after `emselves in those days. Pembo really got it wrong tho`, all going ok and the flip was there but he settled too low and the projection of the ball went askew and got some west ham tart bang on. The west ham won the world cup football academy were under the tutelage of Billy wouldn`t know what a football was if it was lodged up his arse Bonds.

Only football that night was from Glyn Hodges who set up a terrific goal for Beez.

From memory the ground was almost full for the first proper show of the new kop.... but the official attendance was summat like 24000, the first of the tax dodging manipulations of our crowds? (allegedly :-))

Bought a season ticket for the Kop that season. Never again because of the poor leg room and having to keep standing up as so many in front of me kept standing up! Went back to South Stand the following season.

spoke to Beez about that goal when my son played in same team as his younger son in 2012-13. He remembers it well. It was Hodges to agana who backheeled for Hodges to play the ball to Beez!
 
Aye, i moved to the still standing up corner between the kop and john street because f the shite kop leg room!!

Thanks for that Silent, my memory must be slightly wonky i thought it were Glyn to Jock, Jock backheel to Glyn, super drive across for Beez to glide in at pace.

Then again from behind a kop pillar, looking backkards wi` your eyes shut Jock & Tony did look alike

Always remember laughing when crowds went up as 16000 when you were struggling to see were you could fit another 500!

I really remember the night as I was excited to go in the new Kop, then remember everyone moaning about leg room, depth and the bloody posts!

Was the goal the result of the short corner routine we did for years like that? Don't know why they don't try it now it was a great routine.

Jammy offside typical west ham goal, i remember it being scrappy and undeserved but forgot it was 48 yard offside (or thereabouts!!)

First time I saw us use that corner routine was in the FA Cup 5th round match at Norwich in Feb 1989. Martin Pike took the corner from the right, played the ball to Agana who backheeled for Pike to blast the ball to the 6 yards box and it just missed the heads of Booker and Deane. The first success was at Wolves in May 1989 and it was Roberts-Agana- Roberts for Stancliffe to head in the equaliser

 
I practiced the 'Pemberton Rocket' throw-in in our back garden for about two weeks after that game. I had visions of impressing my school mates in the forthcoming Silverdale vs High Storrs derby. I managed to achieve plenty of scuffed knees, nose and elbows but couldn't seem to let go of the ball, so gave up and stuck to standard throw-ins*.

*Well I would have done, but I was an unused sub so didn't get the chance.

I think that was the last time he tried it; as I remember it he raced in from the touchline and took out Ian Bishop (?) with a two-footed 'tackle'.

It later became know as the Leeds (or Tottenham) corner as they copied it in about 1993.
