Scotland international Paul Hartley is wanted by Sheffield United after leaving Celtic at the end of his contract.
Hartley is due for talks with Blades chief Kevin Blackwell this week as he considers his future.
United have slapped a £2.5million price on Matthew Kilgallon's head after he turned down a new contract.
Wigan and Middlesbrough are both chasing the classy defender but could now be put off by the price.
Celtic have confirmed the departures of striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and midfielder Paul Hartley.
Manager Tony Mowbray said: "I had a good long conversation with Paul. He came in to see me.
"The outcome of that is Paul won't be offered a new contract. He is free to look for other employment.

Scotland midfielder Paul Hartley will have a medical on Friday and is expected to complete a move to Bristol City before the weekend.
The 32-year-old's contract with Celtic has expired and Greek side Iraklis Saloniki had also offered him a deal.
Hartley made 36 appearances for Celtic last season and was told by new manager Tony Mowbray he was free to move on.
Hearts were also keen to take Hartley back to Tynecastle, having sold him to Celtic for £1.1m in 2007.
The midfielder, who has 22 Scotland caps, started his career with Hamilton Accies before spells with Millwall, Raith Rovers, Hibernian and St Johnstone.
