CONFIRMED Patrick Bamford

What precisely do people think Bamford "expected" when he signed for us? I will remind everyone again that we were in the relegation zone when he put pen to paper, so I doubt he was expecting us to charge to promotion anytime soon.

If he leaves it will be because someone is offering him more money and (possibly) it is worth uprooting his family for a couple of years, not because we have put in a few shit performances since he signed. That's what teams in a relegation battle tend to do and until we put 6 places and a healthy points total between us and 22nd, that's where we are.

If he decides to stay it will be because he is willing to take a less generous contract, as he is enjoying his time here, with a manager he trusts and also doesn't have to move house, even country.

He signed to put himself in the shop window.

Possibly, and if so then a move away is a fait accompli.

But the suggestion from others is that he will leave us because the team is more shit than he may have imagined. I find that implausible. He knew what he was walking into.
I agree, he knew what the team looked like. What he had no idea about is what life is like on a day to day basis. That may or may not be to his taste, we don’t know, but it could be a factor.

The two aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive. Plenty of folks have been sweet talked into a job to discover it wasn’t what was sold to them. I’m not saying that’s the case here but it certainly happens, in football as in all walks of life.

He should have stayed at Coventry with Frank Lampard perhaps.

He must enjoy working with players (and manager) who put him in the position to score so many though.
Whatever his short or long term desires are.

He wanted to and Lampard wanted him but the owners refused to sanction a deal.

So Frank said get thissen a short term deal till JTW, show everyone what you can do, and then they'll let me sign you in January on a 2 year deal and be back in the Prem soon.

He mentioned that not moving his family was one of the major considerations when he decided to sign for us. If he is settled in the area, even Umerica might not be enough to lure him away, provided we offer him a good contract. A few bad results won't change his thinking one way or the other.
im quite confident he will sign at least.till the summer i think hes enjoying his football with us and wilder

1st Jan according to Wilder and it's now upto owners and the player to decide the outcome. Sounds like Wilder has said yes I want him but negotiation now out of his hands. COH better not muck this up.
A wave at the end of the Stoke game will be telling, I suppose.

What a signing he's turned out to be. I think we may struggle to keep him in Jan. Hopefully he shows some loyalty, I have a feeling he will.
What loyalty do you believe he owes us?
If we’d originally offer him an 18 month deal and then he’s looking to get out after 6 months you’d have a point but he owes us nothing more than what he’s given.
For what it’s worth, I think there’s a better than average chance he at least stays until the summer.
He’s playing well, getting attention and only increasing his profile for the summer when we have no idea what our next stage will be with these owners.

Eh? Eddie now lives in USA
Whoosh 😉

To be fair, Eddie Mcreadie is the bus driver, not the nursery teacher. Failing memory. And apologies to everyone who now has that in their head 🤪

As for Bamford, I hope he stays. After all, he knows we're all wankers at he lane.

He had no club and nobody was falling over themselves to sign him. We've been as good for him as he has for us. With that in mind, I'd say he does.

Unlikely to stay.
The most we should offer in our financial situation is until the end of the season in the hope he helps ensure we stay up.
Beyond that, there's a massive financial restructuring coming up in the summer and we can't and shouldn't commit to anything beyond that.

Disagree. He's performed beyond expectation and more than repaid the "faith" we showed in him. If we wanted him until the end of the season then we should have offered him that contract in the first place. Clearly we wanted a cheap way out if it didn't come off.

And that suited both parties, we could get rid if he was injured or no good and he got a chance to advertise his ability.
His agent won tjenpoler game as he succeeded beyond anyone's wildest dreams and now he gets to negotiate a better contract with us or someone else.

The biggest danger to him not signing for us is that at his age another club offers him a longer contract, say 2-3 years, than we are prepared to offer.

If he’s been as good for him as he has for us, why does he still owe us?
I really don’t understand why loyalty is judged by some fans in such an unbalanced fashion. We didn’t offer him a longer contract so in many ways we didn’t believe in him so why now he’s done as much, if not more than was asked, does he owe us?
It seems like we’re in a position of our own making and hopefully we find a path of mutual gratification.
Our initial lack of conviction is going to cost us though, but I would suspect but thats the risk isn’t it? We’ve certainly been on the end of offer longer deals that never pay off.

If he’d been signed for 18 months and got another injury, the outcry on here would have made the whole Brewster episode seem like a jolly bit of banter. The deal was fair for both sides, at the time. Nobody knew that Ings would end up being ineffective - if he wasn’t, Bamford may have on had 10 minute sub cameos.
It’s now up to us to try and convince him to stay until the end of the season. That said, given his recent career, if another Championship/ lower level PL club offers him a 2-3 year deal on £30-40k per week, he’d be mad not to snap it up.

Exactly right!
