one of my blades kop heros in 1970s was alex sabella he was a different kind of gravy in this era.what did you think of him >?..utb..
So much expectation.
Alas as brilliant as he was a period that brought us to the 4th.
Mind you that was the best ever season I can recollect.

I was never a big Sabella fan. Not going to deny he was a skillful player but he was very lightweight and went into hiding when games became physical. I will remember him mostly for his diving in the box, a lot of the time the ref would see through this but he did con a good few refs on his way to swindling many a penalty.

Before my time but us signing those two lads with apparently poor English the other day made me look up this video from back in the day. Real shame he got the Argentina job so didn't manage here that one time.

Wouldn't it have been Maradona instead if we stumped up a little extra? I don't know the exact history of that time

Yeh remember seeing it on the back page of the Sheffield Star we were getting this wonder kid called Maradona.
Apparently it was agreed with the club and the player. Then one of their directors who was absent at the early meetings, said they wanted more money.
We couldn’t afford the increased fee so went for our 2nd choice Sabella instead.

To be fair based on pure skill Sabella was on a similar but slightly lower level to Maradona…..yes he was that good…almost like a circus act.
However Maradona was quicker……Sabella was incredibly slow…couldn’t sprint…hence his knickname in Argentina of “The Sloth”
Also Maradona was built like an ox, a street fighter with great determination to win. Sabella was small and lightweight.

The skill that I remember about Sabella was his pre match knockabout….he stood out from all the rest….passing the ball from shoulder to shoulder
Then flicking it up and catching the ball on the back of his neck….as a kid i’d never seen anything like it….mesmerizing ball juggling.

Another skill was he had a low centre of gravity (quite small and skinny) so had lightening quick feet and a great body swerve and balance.
So although he was really slow he could dribble past players really easily, defenders would try to tackle him but he was too quick footed and had already moved the ball. Hence he must have been fouled about 20 times every match. He used to draw fouls so much that refs would often not give a foul and sometimes he would dive.

A negative of Sabella was that he’s was terrible without the ball, never tackled, low workrate and didn’t come back to defend.
In some games when it was cold, windy and rainy, especially with muddy pitches….it was like playing with 10 men…he kind of disappeared.
Great memories though, a fantastic talent, doing in-game tricks and flicks on the pitch that you rarely ever see.

Loved him.
Had the Cantors top. I was 14 when we signed him, although my Dad used to take me in the early 70's when I was a little kid, he had fallen out of love with it so I had stopped going.
Age 14, signing Sabella I got back into it hugely, bought my first season ticket, started going on my own with my mates (stood behind the goal just behind the 'moat' and the rollercoaster life of a Blades fan begins!
Sabella was the catalyst for it all really.

What did you think of keith edwards he was a striker of quakity a true kop legendView attachment 203664no9 gemView attachment 203664
Following on from your Sabella thread.
Keith was my first real 'footballing hero' at Sheffield Utd. I think everyone who went at the time loved him and Colin Morris.
In the 4th Division we had just lost 2-1 at Hull and 1-0 to Stockport, so had lost 2 out of our first 5 games in div 4 and the downward slide looked like it would never stop for us.
Porterfield signed Edwards and he started soring straight away and never stopped.
Probably the best natural finisher I have ever seen at Utd.
Without him I dread to think where we would have ended up that season.
I used to go to the old Central League games, he would go to watch the reserves a lot and many times he would come and sit with us on the old John Street and just chat 'football'.
Back in the day when you didn't need fancy songs for players with chorus's, pre-chorus and bridges! Just 'Keith Edwards, Keith Edwards, Keith Edwards' That'll do.

Loved King Keith, naturally gifted goalscorer, Golden Boot winner, and an absolute legend.

The Pele style dummy he did to round the keeper was absolutely magical.

Liked to listen to his commentary on RS as well. Don't know what happened. Hope he's ok.

His autobiography is a great read if you want to know more about his career
That 'Pele dummy' would have been viewed millions of times if there were cameras there. Lucky enough to be behind the goal on the Kop when he did it. Poetry in motion as they say.

First home game of the season I think, when he bagged 4 v Gillingham, Sold the same dummy twice to the same defender.
The one I will always remember is the bank holiday monday away day at old Bolton ground.
Keef scored, headbutted the post as well as the ball, ground was rammed with blades all over.
A lot of rucking both inside and outside ground.
We lost 3-1, but that headed goal got us promoted by GD, we had to wait though till Tuesday on the result of the Burnley v Hull game.
