Len Badger my 1st hero
Firstly: this has been an awful 12 months on & off the pitch.
It's not the end of the world (l know) but as I approach the grand old age of 60 (ffs) & witnessing 4 promotions to the top flight my grievance is the people who continuously take charge of my club.
I was born a Bkade, there is no choice in our family.. As a young'un the politics pass you by. I do remember my dad muttering the names of Jones & Birchenall when I was heartbroken that Salmons was sold. He continued the same muttering as we sold player after player. I always assumed he was exaggerating about how bad it actually was. Only recently I checked: after finishing in the top 10 of the then 1st division for 2 consecutive years, the Blades had a bad start to their next season. Whoever was on the board at the time, made the unexplainable decision to sell 2 top quality forwards within 3 months as an answer!!!!
My post is not new (lack of ambition) but I would like to give my damning perspective & love to know how others feel.
These forums are excellent in their diversity of age & opinion. Some of us who have seen it all before are sceptical about bouncing back next season (we never have). The younger fans have the optimism of youth which sadly left me years ago.
My real real gripe about Sheffield United FC is we are seemingly the only club to NEVER show any sustained ambition. I hear some fans say the Championship is where we belong and what did we expect. I look at Sheffield, SHEFFIELD FFS NOT Burnley, Norwich, Southampton, Leicester, Wigan etc.
We are a huge City in England. We are the home of football clubs. We even dominated football at the end of the 19th Century. We have as much right to be ambitious as any other big City club. We have a huge potential fan base (2 university's) even Stevie fu##in Wonder should be able to spot the potential that I have seen all my life. Why oh why do we never get owners with intentions that are as Big as God's own City.
Perspective: I have seen the Blades win promotion to the Top flight. First was 71/72 with a brilliant footballing side that were mainly homegrown & managed by Legend John Harris. Even at 10 yrs old I can remember thinking: 'why don't we sign some really good players to make us better?'. After 3 years & our best finish for many years, we bought a New Stand & Chris ffs Guthrie. We were led to believe for 20 + years that we were penniless due to the New Stand. You actually would think we were the only club ever to build such a structure.
I don't want to be disillusion anyone but it usually takes on average about 15 years to get back up. When we do eventually get back to the top flight it is never through any kind of ambition shown by owners. Indeed, the last 3 promotions have been almost entirely down to charismatic managers that have been able to perform what can only be described as miracles.
You would think owners who have seen their team get promotion on a limited budget MIGHT JUST MIGHT think bloody hell let's go for it and back the miracle working managers. Alas we never f##kin do. We are always the team with the budget of a small club not a Budget to match The potential & size of our Great City. Last season was tremendous, our finish & style of play was admired by many. This was the moment we could have attracted quality players. But no: again we are told we can't pay wages like other clubs (even in our 2nd year). We are forced to acquire 2 or 3rd choice players. I posted before the season, when optimism was high that in any business if you pay poor wages you will eventually end up failing.
Am I in cloud cuckoo land? Am I the only person that sees how much potential the City I love has? How has nobody else with Big money seen what I think is obvious? How can we seemingly be the only club that never (a couple of times fleetingly) speculate to accumulate?
Why are we the only Big City club to have hone down to the 3rd tier 3 F##KIN TIMES. Why is my Dad 82yrs old & never seen United win owt??
One last thing: I started with Birchenal/Jones which was disgraceful. I can't think of any team doing anything like that!! EXCEPT US: NOT once or even twice but 3 times.
