The club said it was for financial reasons which has me really worried about next season

I think lots will be in the same boat, had no income stream for a while, disrupted schedule, lack of commercial activities both on a match and during the week and missed sponsorship. Certain clubs will be able to ride it out, even prosper (those with mega rich owners who the lockdown has benefited ie Chelsea). I think we won't be spending much, but neither will a lot of mid-table/lower placed sides, I only worry that the gap between the big six and the rest will widen even more

Wilder has already alluded to the reasons why he has gone back.

Utd have indicated that they have no intention of signing either Panos or Zitty for the option prices. This is down to the financial downturn to our club caused from Covid19.

CW also mentioned that the transfer budget has been cut back since the one previously signed off in January, and that was due to the PL TV payback of about £15m plus the club having to find circa £50m in the summer to buy back the ground and property.

Retsos signing for Utd is just a victim of circumstances. On the plus side, CW can work with smaller budgets and he can probably get more bang for his buck with this money he does still have at his disposal.

Can't miss Retsos as he hardly played for us.

As for Zitty, well as his Chinese club ha e continued to allow him to stay with us until the end of this season despite knowing that we aren't going to take up the option transfer price, means that either they want us to get him fit and involved, or they may still be open to him signing for us, at a lower price. Maybe he is still playing for a move to us permanently.

That's a real shame for the lad. He looked absolutely delighted when he signed for us.

Be interesting to see if we renegotiate with Leverkusen over the summer. Doesn’t appear to have a future there and we look light there going into next season already.

You never know. We might pickup Retsos in the future.

We might have had to tighten our belt but I'm guessing his parent club will have to do the same, and may accept a lower fee at some point

Other than Hendo, he was the only other loan player I would have liked us to keep as he can play about 3 different positions in defence.

If he did not trust him at all to even be on the bench in games then not sure why he's suddenly go back and sign him. I feel Wilder had a look and realised he was not worth the fee they were asking for, especially for someone who is barely going to play.

With his pedigree he looked a steal...but Leverkeusen were going to let him go for a fraction of what they paid, in the cold light of day it seems obvious he was having problems.

The lad wasn’t getting game time. Which highly rated player would go to a club on loan and want to stay at that club if he wasn’t playing?

Players, most of the time go on loan to get games, it’s been a very strange situation for him throughout his short time here.

He would have stayed for the season if the season hadn't been paused for 3 months though.

Whether he wanted to stay, or whether we wanted him to stay, he's still a highly rated Leverkusen defender - and with the Bundesliga having one game left and Leverkusen in for a European spot next season, they might just think "he's back fit, we'll have him back for the next campaign" rather than trying to find another player in what's likely to be a mental transfer window.

For all the folk rushing to use this as an alert on us suddenly being unable to afford him, do look back at the reasons Wilder explicitly gave in between Villa & Newcastle. You’ll recall early into lockdown he was asked about exactly the scenario where players didn’t want to play – it’s basically identical to the bit I bolded below from his comments last week.

I’ll repeat it again for those at the back – to extend any expiring contracts we need to have both the club and player agree to it. In these instances we clearly wanted to keep the loan players, but only Zivkovic has agreed to stay on. So no need to criticise Wilder for sending Retsos back, nor any need to panic over this being financially driven – it clearly wasn’t.

We have had a couple of the loan players that won't re-sign and I understand that because of their lack of opportunities.

"They don't want to put themselves in a position, they have to look at their careers, but all our main actors that are out of contract have re-signed.

"When we set out on to the pitch we have to have everybody pulling together, we can't have anyone going in different directions, not our players, not our football club, from where we have come from and how far we have come.

"If anyone breaks the chain and don't want to be part of it, no problem.

I fully respect their decision. They will make their decisions based on how they feel and what they feel is right for themselves and their careers.

"One is Mo Besic and I won't name the other player but we will be 24 to 48 hours in coming to that decision.

"Mo has not been with us for a month now and there is a decision to make with Panos and Richario.

"We will make those decisions over the next 24 to 48 hours in conjunction with the players and all the details will be in that statement."

Awful news about O'Connell. Ampadu can play LCB.

I wonder if we might get Retsos back on loan now, as cover across the backline and already half settled into our team.

That’s an interesting shout. Can even play left side if needed to as well. That said, he didn’t get a game last season so makes you wonder if Wilder rates him at all.

We didn't exactly rotate players last season. Not seen anything to say Retsos wasn't "up to it"... But it's possible.

Apparently close to joining St Etienne on loan with a €6.5m option to buy agreement. Much have been really shite if we weren't arsed about going in for him.

never worked out for him , or United.

Some players fit certain football styles , he didnt fit ours.
Hes not the first and wont be the last
One neighbour is a mad Rangers fan and he adores John Lundstram
takes all sorts

David Carmo, his CB partner, was also linked with us last summer. He's done very well for them apparently. Probably the sort we could have actually signed with any sort of acceptable budget

If I remember Retsos was almost permanently injured from the day he joined us, that's why it didn't work out. Looking at his Wiki, it looks like he has barely played any football for the last 4 years due to fitness and finally this season has been able to get a decent run of games under his belt and now is an European final. Maybe, just maybe Rhian B...............
