Paddy Kenny - drugs test

I still think the football rules are ridicolous, not allowed to treat your coughs, wtf? just that says it all for me.

But they're really, really not. No one says you're not allowed to treat your coughs. What it does say is that there are banned substances, and ephedrine - in high enough concentrations - is one of them.

So, it is advised that footballers do not take any medicines that haven't been approved by their club doctor, because if they do so, this exact thing could happen.

Say you're a footballer, who wants to cheat, so you take ephedrine. You then get caught by a urine sample. You tell the anti-doping people that you'd just taken some cough medicine, so that explains the presence of the drug in your urine. What should they do? Let you off? No. The rules are set up in such a way that you can't plead ignorance as a defence; nor can you say you were caught with the drugs accidentally because you're told not to take them by your club.

At worst, Paddy has broken the rules to gain an advantage. At best, he's been very stupid and made it look like he might have something to hide. The anti-doping people can't just let him off because he says he took cough medicine. They have to investigate, and quite rightly too.

Whatever punishment he gets, I will stand by. I can't defend what he's done, whether it's cheating or just being an idiot. Either way, the damage is done.

My favourite quote that I have on my facebook page:

"If you can keep clean sheets then you know that you're going to win or draw a game, definitely not lose it"
Paddy Kenny dispells the myth that footballers are thick! 15 October 2008

Enough said really, sorry Paddy!

And how are you to know he had more than one spoonful of the stuff or one tablet.. and the FA are just being idioots if thats the case. They havent said anything on the matter yet. If hes taken more than 2 tablet/spoon .. he's a cheat.. if he has took one tablet/spoon or maybe two.. hes not a cheat.

I dont have to go to my manager at work and say "Can i please take some cough medicine.. i've got an awful cough" its ridicolous. I also wouldn't get acked if they found out i did take some cough medicine. If it was illegal, it wouldn't be prescribed on the NHS.

Thats just like saying, a footballer cant have a drink of Boost or Red bull on the day of a game, or the previous night before. If thats the case, im glad im not a footballer.

The problem is not with taking cough medicine per-se it is the fact that they contain substances found in performance enhancing drugs. So people caught taking them could say "it was cough medicine yer honour, honest" so they banned them all. Its not a secret, I knew and I'm not a proffessional sportsman, Paddy should have known better, the rule is also quite clear that ignorance is not an excuse and cannot be used as a defence. There is also no leeway for quantities as different things affect people in different ways.

The powers can take things like that into consideration when deciding the punishment though.

I think you're missing the point.

What I'm saying is that if a player can use that particular line of defence to hide a sinister use of the drug, the whole thing falls apart. Players would just cheat and then blame it on cough medicine. That's why they're not supposed to take it.

Also, you're not a footballer. You're not tested for performance enhancing drugs. Your situation cannot be compared to his.

He took a banned substance, therefore he should accept whatever punishment he gets. To say otherwise is like arguing that drink-driving is okay if somebody spikes your orange juice with vodka.
He always had the opportunity to read the label on the medicine, or at least get a grown-up to read it for him.
Whatever punishment he gets is his own tough shit, it's just a shame that he will drop us in the shit too.

I agree with matth and Vistoma on this one. Like I've said before, I do think the punishment is a little harsh if it is to be a two-year-ban, but none of us know if Paddy was taking the drug intentially in order to aid performance. Surely there's some cough medicine that the club could've prescribed him? That's the only thing that worries me about this case - if he's chosen to ignore club rules, or the advice of the staff, then he could be out of the game for a while.

A lot of people are comparing this to the Mutu situation. Yes he took a banned substance, but I and many others have used the word stupid...So it brings me appropriately to Rio Ferdinand.

Ferdinand didn't even fail a drugs test, he just forgot to take it. He was found guilty of misconduct, banned for 8 months and fined 50,000.

Sorry to say it again but as much as I like Paddy, but a stupid error is going to cost him and rightly so.

No place for drugs in the game, but also no place for stupidity.

He's f*cked up and sorry to say but he has to take whatever comes to him on the chin. They know the rules, they get paid well to stick to them.

People get colds all the time and very few end up in this situation

Personally I think Paddy's had a bit of a cough. He didn't want to alert the club doctor to it so thought he'd nip down to Boots and sort it himself because he knew that everyone needed to be 100% for such an important game and he ran the risk of missing a game he desparately wanted to play in.

Oh, and he's a bit thick.

I think that's a little harsh IMO I've met paddy on a few occasions in the pub at anston where my ex collegue lives. From what I have observed/heard he seems a genuine bloke and just seems to be a bit daft if that's the right terminology. I think this seems to be a case of him thinking he knows best. If it is it's just a case of him bucking up his ideas, if not then he deserves a high punishment... We will see and hopefully soon..

I never meant to be so harsh. I'm sure he's good as a person and I'm not pissed at Paddy per se but pissed by what he has done and by the fact that he had put himself ahead of the club.

This would again mean that he had put himself ahead of the club and as a result has let everyone down.

or about a safe in someones garden. allegedly.
Or fielding too many loan players.

Do we get onto the fascist referee batterer yet? or leave that one for later on? :D

I work with a bloke who's a good mate of Paddy's dad, he was telling me he was out for a drink with Kenny snr and his uncle (i think) the other day, and Kenny snr was telling him that Paddy's gutted about it all. He also says it was a genuine mistake, and that apparently Paddy has the original prescription given to him for whatever he took. Allegedly Paddy couldn't get hold of the club Dr so took it upon himself to get it sorted.
They are quite confident that he'll be cleared of any wrongdoing. But i've got to say that i'm not so sure, i think they'll come down like a ton of bricks.
I suppose i'd better also add all this is allegedly to cover my arse. But the bloke that told me does know Kenny snr well.
