Kenny Fails Drugs Test??? wtf.

Ive just been on newsnow.co.uk and been on utd's page to see if any transfer news.
I was shocked to see the headline "Sheffield United Goalkeeper Paddy Kenny Fails Drugs Test".

Now i know its from the mirror and we hate the mirror. But surley they couldnt go that low.

Theres also another article saying he was absent from training, which i read earlier in day but thought nothing of it. But now i dont know what to think.

I'm in shock!

According to the reliable Mirror he was feeling unwell before the play off semi v Preston and instead of taking advice from the medical team at SUFC he went out and bought something which contained a banned something or something.

If its true it looks like a stupid mistake but if the Mirror is correct (when have they ever been???) could end up being banned for 6 months to 2 years!

The club could also end up in the sh*te!

Bloody hell Paddy! Lets just hope its not true.

If it is, then theres we shouldn't cancel his contract, perhaps he can move to Hungary, Sau Paulo, Chengdu, Belgium or Australia for a while...

It's all still rumours as even the Guardian are using the words "reportedly"... until that time, we'll keep it in here.

It's worth noting that Adrian Mutu only received a £20000 fine and a 7 month ban for using cocaine. While still not a performance enhancing drug, it is an illegal one. I'd hope for more leniency for something that is bought over the counter... however foolish the player may be for not consulting the club doctors first.
 
Someone at work just said - i'm unsure of the source on this one - that we may get deducted 10 points for withholding the information about this.

I can't see how we can have, because i'd assume all drug tests are carried out by independent testers.
 
To put it into perspective, the substance he has apparently failed the test for is most commonly found in Sudafed.

It is not banned on the World Anti Doping Agencies list, merely monitored but was banned before 2004, seeing Andreea Răducan stripped of an Olympic gold medal but not banned from competing.

Is it still banned by Footballs governing body or are they in line with the world anti doping agencies?

Well seeing as he has reportedly "failed" his drugs test, I would say it was banned.

Just trying to find out the full list and why it is banned.

He was reportedly randomly tested by the obviously independent testers after the Second Leg against Preston.

There is absolutely no way we could be guilty of witholding any information, as we didn't have any information to withold! :)
 
Curious.

The FA Doping Regulations refer directly to the WADA List of Prohibited Substances.

The following is a quote from this list:

The following substances included in the 2009 Monitoring Program (bupropion, caffeine, phenylephrine, phenylpropanolamine, pipradol, pseudoephedrine, synephrine) are not considered as Prohibited Substances.

It's use as monitored as it is considered a stimulant similar to caffeine but isn't viewed to be a particularly effective stimulant as it's only really effective for people who are sensitive to it. As I said previously, it's most commonly found is Sudafed.

The FA Doping laws set out the failure of a test as a strict liability offence. This means that you don't have to intend to use the drugs, the mere presence of them in your test means you're guilty.

The FA penalties draw heavily from WADA's and the minimum penalty is a suspension of two years for a first offence should a "prohibited substance" be found to be reduced in exceptional circumstances.

We have already established that WADA do not consider what Paddy apparently failed the test for to be a prohibited substance. The FA regulations refer time and time again to WADA's list throughout the regulations.

I can only think that the substance is being reported incorrectly. As far as I can see, it isn't banned?

Also, the request for the B sample to be tested following the failure of the A sample has to be made in writing to the FA... so how exactly they can claim they didn't know anything about it I don't know.

15.2. Every Player shall have the right to request that the Reserve "B" Sample be tested to
ascertain whether the sample discloses the presence of the same Prohibited Substance or
use of a Prohibited Method as was detected in the Main "A" Sample. Such a request must be
made in writing to The FA within seven days of the notification to the Player that the Main "A"
Sample disclosed the presence of a Prohibited Substance or use of a Prohibited Method.
Once a Player has requested the analysis of the Reserve "B" Sample, the laboratory which
conducted the “A” sample analysis will arrange dates, in liaison with The FA and UK Sport for
analysis of the Reserve "B" Sample.

Sorry for the double post.

Ephedrine is now being reported (5 Live) as being the substance found which is on the list of prohitibed substances at certain levels.

**** Each of ephedrine and methylephedrine is prohibited when its concentration in urine is greater than 10 micrograms per milliliter.

But Ephedrine is apparently only available via prescription only in the UK... not exactly over the counter.
 
Well, either way, think his days at United could be numbered. Need another keeper now as we'll be without one for at least 6 Months!
 
I really don't know where the six months figure has come from.

As stated in the FA's Doping Regulations, the minimum suspension is two years for a first offence.

Only under exceptional circumstances do they say they will reduce the length, and then they can make it up as they go along. Six months seems to have been plucked out of nowhere.

5. Minimum penalties

Positive findings will be dealt with as strict liability offences. This means, for example, that a Player
will be guilty of a Doping Offence if a Prohibited Substance, Metabolite or Marker is present in that
Player’s body. It is not relevant whether or not the Player intended to take the Prohibited Substance.

Participants should note that there are a number of minimum penalties set out in the Doping
Regulations which are based on the minimum penalties stipulated by WADA. These include a
minimum suspension of two years for a first offence if a Prohibited Substance is present or detected
in a Player’s body. It is only in exceptional circumstances that these minimum penalties may be
reduced.

The presence or use of a social drug does give you a shorter sentence. You're better taking crack it seems:

“Social Drugs” means amphetamine, cannabinoids (for example, hashish and marijuana), cocaine,
diamorphine (heroin), lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), methadone, methylamphetamine,
methylenedioxymethylamphetamine (MDMA or ecstasy), and methylenedioxyethylamphetamine (MDEA)
and such other substances which The FA deems to be a Social Drug from time to time. The current list of
Social Drugs shall be published on The FA’s website www.TheFA.com;

ephedrine in an over the counter vikcs inhaler did for that scots ski jump guy in the winter olympics if i remember correctly. bloody stupid to take anything without the ok of the club doctor
 
Apparently according to a colleague, Danny Caddermarteri (sp) got 6 months ban for taking "Night Nurse"

so this could be a similar situation. I think we need to see what happens
 
Statement from SUFC

Sheffield United has suspended goalkeeper Paddy Kenny after the player was notified he had failed a drugs test.

The Club has taken the action - part of our standard procedures - after last month's outcome of the tests, carried out by UK Sport, the agency responsible for drug testing programmes in sport.

A Sheffield United spokesman said: "We can confirm that Paddy Kenny has been suspended by the Club. This is an ongoing, confidential matter and as such we are unable to comment further."

The Guardian claim that if he can prove it was taking as a cold medicine, then the social drugs ruling sentences can apply.

In that case, they have sort of changed the definition of strict liability since my days of legal studies :)
 
He should know, i know ex players etc and they knew for instance you can't take anadin as it will show up in a test.

Hope it's just classed under the social ruling

As for Paddy, any player whose been in the game as long as he has should know you don't take anything unless given the OK by the club doctor. Thick as fuck?
