When we started our run teams treated us normally and our high pressing and level of ability were enough for us to go unbeaten for 15. But from the middle to the end of the run teams progressively realised that they wouldn’t beat us like that and became increasingly defensive. We all know that defending is easier than attacking and breaking down 2 lines of 4 is very difficult at any level. There are 3 ways to beat it – go round it, go over it or go through it.

Going over it or going round it requires real pace – which we haven’t got, and going through it requires a higher level of ability than you will ever normally find in League 1 – and which we are seeing that we lack. So you have to have pace to beat it – and there we stutter. Going over and exploiting pace in the middle requires a clinical striker with pace – very unlikely to get one in League 1. So that leaves pace out wide to go round it. Again, getting genuine pace with an ability to put in perfect crosses to head is probably beyond League 1, but getting real pace with a simple instruction to get round the back and hammer it across the 6 yard line is possible. This achieves 2 things – with strikers instructed to anticipate and make near and far post runs it creates chances and goals. But crucially, seeing that this is happening stretches the opposition and creates more space in the centre and increases your ability to play through the middle as well.

Freeman with an instruction to stay wider and Coutts and Fleck with instruction to get it to him early can just about do this. Neither of our left-side options looks capable of this. So for me, getting real pace in both wing backs and keeping them wide is fundamental to the way that we are trying to play. In American football if you want to play the passing game you have to keep the opposition honest by showing that you can run the ball. For us it is exactly the same – to be able to play through teams we have to show that we can and will go round them. There has to be a Plan B and the resources in place to play it.

Onwards and Upwards and We Will Do Magic Again

Whilst I love having pacy players in our team, I think the importance of pace can be over stated depending on the playing style of our opponents. If playing like Leicester last year - with a very counter-attacking style - then pace is absolutely crucial. However if teams are sat back, defending deep (as all recent visitors to BDTBL have done) then sheer pace alone is worth little. Instead understanding between players, sharp passing moves, and perhaps pace over 5 yards - not 30 yards - is more important (see Bolton's third goal).

What we don't really have (and which is key if teams are sat back) is the ability to beat a man out wide (which is different to just being quick) and which Chapman brought to the party against Walsall. If he is out, then another option to add further trickery from out wide is certainly required. It would also be handy if our crossing improved, and/or for our players to make runs across/into the 6 yard box (see Leicester's goal on Saturday for a great near post run that our players never seem to make - despite being the obvious run if you are of a modest height)!

this would in my view utilise Clarke's strengths, having played with his back to goal for 80 minutes meaning he carried no goal threat, the one danger he presented was running onto Billy's cross from wide right which he was unlucky not to turn in.

The first thing we need to work on is our crossing. We've been getting into a fair few good crossing opportunities and then our players seem to go all Kozluk all of a sudden.
That's why a lot of teams have moved away from crossing and try to pass the ball into the box. It's very difficult to hit a cross that doesn't favour the defenders, particularly if you haven't got an old fashioned centre forward. When I was a kid something like half of the goals you saw were from crosses but I suspect that figure is a lot less now.

Agree with that, it's the 'going at players' that we seem to lack and Chapman is possibly the only one who has been doing it given the few chances he's had. We aren't going to pass through teams on a regular basis in this Division and the lack of shooting from distance means we tend to end up passing sideways again or crossing into a crowded box.

Tufty and Knill have mentioned overlapping numerous times in recent interviews and that's where we're likely to get our joy but as you say, the crossing has been pretty bad of late and that's being kind.

As I've mentioned elsewhere though, we have the 'better' teams to come to BDTBL and the 'lesser' teams away so that should suit us regardless.
