Oztumer

As good a player as Oztumer is, I am not sure there is space for him in this team. The thing we lack is pace and as a good a player as he is he is very lightweight and not the quickest.

Which is why I believe we have gone for someone with out an out pace in Thomas.

We do not really have any out and out wingers in our team, and Oztumer tome seems more of a Duffy/Carruthers role.
I am not sure he is better than them anyway, this year he has a stand out season, but season before 6 in 35 and was released.

Stats:
Oztumer : 15 goals in 45 appearances
Jay O'Shea: 11 goals in 43 appearances (from January been on subs bench a lot)

So Oztumer does out perform O'Shea, statistically but the other factors are a poor Chesterfield team, and since Jan he has been mainly used a sub.

Oztumer may cost £500-£1mill (guesswork) and O'Shea is a free. I know who I would be choosing, we can use the money elsewhere.

It's a nice position to be in when we are being linked with very good players and our fans are wondering where on earth we would fit them in the team. I felt the same when we signed Jim Bone from Norwich.

But I tell you what happens...

Players go off form or pick up injuries or suspensions. If Fleck was out, or Duffy was out, who have we got to replace them of similar quality? Carruthers perhaps for Duffy? But Carruthers for me blows very hot and cold. And how about for Fleck?

This guy Oztumer could play just about anywhere in the midfield but his real strength I'd say is to be given a free role, a bit like we do with Duffy. I really like Duffy and think he's a key player - but some games he just seems to hit a bit of a wall and fades away, or his eye just isn't in for some reason.

I would love to see Oztumer in a good Blades team. That would be something else I tell you. Don't worry about where he would fit in - that's the manager's job - you don't come across players with his talent every day and I'd rate him as one of the best midfielders I've seen in years, even including the Championship and many Prem teams.

Would prefer Carruthers because he has a bit more physicality. I think Oztumer is limited by his presence and consequently would struggle to do the box-to-box work necessary at the higher level.

Based on those comments I don't think you've ever seen him play?

I'll be surprised if he's a player we will be looking to bring in I think the big fees will be spent on a centre back and another centre forward.
As for his size I think this will be the thing that will be holding him back he was on a free last season and he didn't go to the championship the has to be something that is going against him and for me it's probably his size.

I don't think size matters. I've been saying this to my wife for years.

I don't think we are talking about "big fees" either. I mean, Walsall aren't exactly the Bank of England and they managed to find the money to sign him from Peterboro last season. Of course he's still got a year to go on his contract, so there'd be some payout due there, but that shouldn't be beyond us.

Taking your line of argument then, would you say that the reason John Fleck didn't go to the Championship was because he's small? I mean, you could have said, "John Fleck can't be any good because Coventry let him go on a free and no Championship club wanted him". And how wrong would that have been?

I think you have to put current contract status, height, and whatever else to one side and look at the player and ask "What could he do for us?" "Would he fit into this team?" For me, Oztumer would be the icing on the cake from what I've seen of him. The bloke has so much skill that you can play him anywhere across midfield or even up front and he will do a job for you. It's some years since I've seen a player that will try things the he tries. He's regularly looking to lob the keeper or shoot from 50 yards out! He's not afraid to do the extraordinary and how we could do with some of that. I honestly think that if we sign him it will be one of the best signings we've ever made. They've nicknamed him "the Turkish Messi" and whilst that's probably taking it a bit too far, there are a lot of similarities in the way he plays. Very clever midfield player who will burst forward and do something very extraordinary, or lob the keeper from 50 yards out. Brilliant entertainment and I think he can do that at Championship level - hopefully for us!

I see the question of a player's size has reared it's head again.......it puzzles me to be frank. Of course, if we were looking at a centre-half, or goalkeeper, I'd expect a physical presence, probably want a player to be at least 6' plus, and have a commanding presence.

As for the rest of the team, well I think it's about balance and who we have that can do the job expected of the manager. Of course it helps if we have physicality throughout the team. A big man up front is always useful, as is a similar type in midfield who can compete with the opposition. But surely quality and attitude are the primary qualities we should look for? Some of the best midfield players I've ever watched have been diminutive, on the small side, but possessed of skill and tenacity that more than compensated for their lack of inches. In a current context, being small never seemed to harm the way players like David Silva, Philippe Coutinho, or Eden Hazard are able to control games and make a positive difference to the way their teams played. They're able to up their game so that they match any physical confrontation during a game. Bottom line, they're simply outstanding players, and this type of players has excelled at any time I've watched football over the last 57 years. It's a complete and utter nonsense that the only thing that matters is that a player must be tall and able to compete. If that were the case what happened to Sammon or Higdon? Quality and attitude gentlemen, these are the things that matter.

David Brookes could become this good but I agree with all you say there.

Not sure if it has been mentioned, but David Brookes is part of the England youth team that will be playing in a tournament in France.

No, that was David Beckham.

Easy mistake to make though as they both have a David in their name and surnames beginning with B.

Spent a day with David Beckham when I did some work with him, some years ago, a genuinely nice bloke. Not long after I spent a day with Mr. T in Los Angeles, a laugh a minute and another nice bloke.

He's in the Wales squad with Norrington-Davies.

He was in the Wales squad, he pulled out because England wanted him as well

Midfielder David Brooks has been named in England's squad for the Toulon Tournament - just minutes after withdrawing from Wales' squad.

Brooks, 19, was included in a 20-man party for Wales' first appearance in the prestigious Under-20 competition.

But the Sheffield United player's England call-up was announced 11 minutes after his Wales withdrawal.

"It's a frustrating part of the job with dual nationality players," said Wales manager Robert Page.

"We'll support him in his decision."

Brooks has made four appearances in all competitions for League One champions Sheffield United this season.

The size regards Fleck is different he's big upper body but yes Fleck was on a free last season why did he stay in league 1 why did no championship club take a punt on him perhaps he had offers from lower end championship clubs but still decided to come to us for whatever reason, Coventry may have offered him a new contract but decided to turn it down and leave on a free.
It's the same with Oztumer mid 20s never played above league 1 scouts and managers from championship clubs will have looked at him and said no, he may move this summer for a decent fee a manager from the championship may think he is worth a good fee.
My opinion is a good big un will always beat a good little un, the are exceptions Messi, Zola but they were special players.
I would be surprised if Wilder is looking at this guy Walsall will want a good fee I would expect some more signings along the lines to what we have just had and then perhaps good fees played for another striker and a centre back.

I agree with the poster who said Oztumer is one of the best players who has lined up against us recently. He was class and completely dominated our midfield (as it was then). I think he would be an excellent signing.

I'm not one to rave about potential signings. I don't go on YouTube and watch some footage of a bloke I've never heard of and then wax lyrical about him like I've been watching him all my life. But Oztumer is a different class imo. Based on seeing him live on 4 occasions (and a bit of YouTube admittedly).

Anyhow I'll give it a rest now until we sign him or he goes elsewhere. But he's special I'm tellin yer!

Did you knob Victoria? Or face?

We already have Duffy and Carruthers, Brooks to come back after his loan spell, O'Shea offered a deal; how many do we want?
I suggest we are not looking for a number 10 unless one of the above leaves. Unless of course TC wants to come out of retirement

Brooks out on loan

O’Shea now gone

Carruthers rumoured to be unsettled.

Duffy getting on and never done it in the championship.

It’s now looking increasingly likely that we will bring someone in for this position. My money would be on Holmes but Oztumer certainly has something about him. I was hoping we would sign him from Posh when Walsall did on a free but it wasn’t to be.

What about this guy:

Two Stocksbridge goals does not a player make.

The lad has barely had a sniff of men's football, we can't rest our hopes on him. If he's good enough he'll get his chances but we need some quality with experience as well. Too much on Brooks' shoulders is unfair and could be detrimental to his development.

(This is coming from someone who was at the Stocky game and thought he was the absolute tits...but we need to be realistic)
