Kyle Walker going in goal for Man City tonight had me thinking about the outfield players The Blades have used in goal due to injury or a sending off to the goalie. Embarrassingly, I can only think of Jags but obviously there are more. Tracey must have been sent off about 20 times alone!

Does anyone have memories of others who went in goal?

Peschisolido and Pemberton spring to mind. Nilsen too.

As an aside, Warnock weirdly put in his autobiography that during the Battle of Bramall Lane he had to put “a left back called Wilko De Vogt in goal” after Tracey’s red card. I don’t know this this was a joke, senility on Warnock’s part, or if we genuinely just signed a random left back to never play left back and occasionally feature in goal in mediocre fashion.

Did Peschisoliso ever actually go in goal for a game? I know he used to piss about at half time and Warnock said he was the back up keeper but I don't remember it ever actually happening.

I suspect this may have come up before and I’ve just imagined that this happened. Mainly because I’ll have wanted this to have happened.

Alan Woodward was the best emergency keeper we have had

81 minutes v L**ds (h) in Nov 1967 (won 1-0), 15 minutes v Newcastle (h) (League Cup) in Sept 1969 (won 2-0), 4 minutes at Orient in Aug 1970 (lost 3-1), 25 mins at L**ds in Nov 1972 (lost 2-1), 31 mins v Man City (h) in Oct 1973 (lost 2-1). Five stints as an emergency keeper totalling 156 minutes and conceded just one goal which was an own goal by Billy Dearden in the Man City match

Woody and Dearden always worked well together!😀

The impressive thing is how well we've done with outfield players in goal. Did Jags ever let one in?

Best goalie kit ever...(not)...

Ian Bryson v Norwich in the Bassett Prem years. Kept a clean sheet I think, 1-0

Here's a list I did a few years ago in another post dating from 1982-3: I don't think there are any additions since. There are a few comments about the games I actually saw.

Alan Young vs Millwall in 1982-3 (last 10 mins, conceded 1, United won 2-1)

Glenn Cockerill vs Luton in 1985-6 (league cup) (a 15 minute spell, John Burridge came back on and finished game: Cockerill conceded one and we lost 3-1)

Paul Stancliffe vs West Brom in 1987-8 (whole of second half: conceded 2 in a 4-0 defeat)

John Pemberton vs Liverpool in 1990-1 (75 minutes - conceded all 3 in 3-1 defeat). Pemeberton was at fault for one of the goals, needlessly racing out and missing the ball.

Roger Nilsen vs Norwich in 1996-7 (played last 20 mins - conceded twice in 2-3 defeat). Nilsen was shocking, and was at fault for both goals, one an o.g. by David Holdsworth. There must have been someone on the field who could have done better.

Don Hutchison vs Ipswich in 1997-8 (played last half hour - conceded once in 2-2 draw). Saw this game on telly. Hutchison did ok but might have done a bit better with their late equaliser, I remember.

Shaun Derry vs Portsmouth in 1997-8 (end of 1st half and all of 2nd half: "clean sheet" in a 1-1 draw). Portsmouth were very poor in the second half and I'm not sure Derry had a shot to save, but his handling was good. He was the best of the 3 keepers who played that day - Tracey got sent off, and Alan Knight dropped Lee Sandford's cross into his own net for our equaliser.

Phil Jagielka vs Palace in 2003-4 (played second half in a 2-1 win: 1 goal conceded). Like Derry, he had little to do, as United were 2 up at HT and defended really well even after Brown got sent off. Their goal was a penalty so no blame for that. Showed good handling skills.

Phil Jagielka vs Millwall in 2004-5 (played second half - 1 goal conceded, United won 2-1)

Phil Jagielka vs Plymouth in 2004-5 (played the last hour - conceded twice in a 3-0 defeat)

Phil Jagielka vs Arsenal in 2006-7 (played last half hour - "clean sheet" in a 1-0 win)

Seem to remember Woodward in goal Derby away saving 2 pens from Alan Hinton in the 70s no idea of date but I was there.
One for silent

He did in a blades legends game against Fulham for the second half- primarily because we didn’t have an actual goalkeeper. Not that that really counts though!

Oh, and the reason all these guys went in goal:

Young - Waugh injured
Cockerill - Burridge injured
Stancliffe - Hansbury injured
Pemberton - Tracey injured
Nilsen and Hutchison - Kelly injured
Derry - Tracey sent off
Jags v Palace, Plymouth, Arsenal - Kenny injured
Jags v Millwall - Kenny sent off

Quick trivia question - the opposite situation, with a sub keeper playing outfield for United, has only happened once. Who did this and when?

Any ideas why Curry sticks two fingers up to the stand after his equaliser?
It wasn't the only match he did it when celebrating a goal (Man City (h) in Feb 1972 and Bristol City (h) in FA Cup in January 1975 spring to mind). Woody did it too celebrating his winner at Chelsea in Sept 1973 (you can see it in you tube)
