Outfield players in goal

Kyle Walker going in goal for Man City tonight had me thinking about the outfield players The Blades have used in goal due to injury or a sending off to the goalie. Embarrassingly, I can only think of Jags but obviously there are more. Tracey must have been sent off about 20 times alone!

Does anyone have memories of others who went in goal?
nah nah nah nah , he's a Blade, n' he's a Blade.

Oh, and the reason all these guys went in goal:

Young - Waugh injured
Cockerill - Burridge injured
Stancliffe - Hansbury injured
Pemberton - Tracey injured
Nilsen and Hutchison - Kelly injured
Derry - Tracey sent off
Jags v Palace, Plymouth, Arsenal - Kenny injured
Jags v Millwall - Kenny sent off

Quick trivia question - the opposite situation, with a sub keeper playing outfield for United, has only happened once. Who did this and when?

Tracey was the keeper when Hutchinson went in nets at Ipswich. He knocked himself out on the post.

How many times has an opposition player gone in goal? Pontus Jansen for Leeds last season is the only one I can think of.

Beckford (1992) and Newman (1995) for Norwich. Will think of more.

Who do we think would go in goal for the current United side under such circumstances (excluding Jags).

Don’t know why but I’m thinking Basham. He just seems the type.

Did the great Mel Rees get subbed in the defeat against Leeds when they beat us to win the league later that day? He was crocked and couldn’t move to get Gayle’s header back. Without that injury we’d have beaten them.

Here's a list I did a few years ago in another post dating from 1982-3: I don't think there are any additions since. There are a few comments about the games I actually saw.

Alan Young vs Millwall in 1982-3 (last 10 mins, conceded 1, United won 2-1)

Glenn Cockerill vs Luton in 1985-6 (league cup) (a 15 minute spell, John Burridge came back on and finished game: Cockerill conceded one and we lost 3-1)

Paul Stancliffe vs West Brom in 1987-8 (whole of second half: conceded 2 in a 4-0 defeat)

John Pemberton vs Liverpool in 1990-1 (75 minutes - conceded all 3 in 3-1 defeat). Pemeberton was at fault for one of the goals, needlessly racing out and missing the ball.

Roger Nilsen vs Norwich in 1996-7 (played last 20 mins - conceded twice in 2-3 defeat). Nilsen was shocking, and was at fault for both goals, one an o.g. by David Holdsworth. There must have been someone on the field who could have done better.

Don Hutchison vs Ipswich in 1997-8 (played last half hour - conceded once in 2-2 draw). Saw this game on telly. Hutchison did ok but might have done a bit better with their late equaliser, I remember.

Shaun Derry vs Portsmouth in 1997-8 (end of 1st half and all of 2nd half: "clean sheet" in a 1-1 draw). Portsmouth were very poor in the second half and I'm not sure Derry had a shot to save, but his handling was good. He was the best of the 3 keepers who played that day - Tracey got sent off, and Alan Knight dropped Lee Sandford's cross into his own net for our equaliser.

Phil Jagielka vs Palace in 2003-4 (played second half in a 2-1 win: 1 goal conceded). Like Derry, he had little to do, as United were 2 up at HT and defended really well even after Brown got sent off. Their goal was a penalty so no blame for that. Showed good handling skills.

Phil Jagielka vs Millwall in 2004-5 (played second half - 1 goal conceded, United won 2-1)

Phil Jagielka vs Plymouth in 2004-5 (played the last hour - conceded twice in a 3-0 defeat)

Phil Jagielka vs Arsenal in 2006-7 (played last half hour - "clean sheet" in a 1-0 win)

Denis Shiels for Alan Hodgkinson in October 1959 v Leyton Orient lost 2-0 at home - no subs of course.

Was just going to say - Shaun Derry in the infamous "linesman twatting" game at Pompey in 1998. I was there in a rare away appearance for me, didn't think we were gonna get out of the ground alive !

Beckford (1992) and Newman (1995) for Norwich. Will think of more.
Kelsey was injured for Arsenal in the 1959 cup replay, and replaced by left-back Evans. Utd won 3-0. Next round, the Norwich keeper Nethercott dislocated his shoulder, but played on, and Utd barely tested him in a 1-1 draw. He did not play in the replay. I think you told me he didn't play again.

And the linesman got knocked out by an unhappy Blade with a tripod!
My first ever Blades game 😀

Alan Woodward was the best emergency keeper we have had

81 minutes v L**ds (h) in Nov 1967 (won 1-0), 15 minutes v Newcastle (h) (League Cup) in Sept 1969 (won 2-0), 4 minutes at Orient in Aug 1970 (lost 3-1), 25 mins at L**ds in Nov 1972 (lost 2-1), 31 mins v Man City (h) in Oct 1973 (lost 2-1). Five stints as an emergency keeper totalling 156 minutes and conceded just one goal which was an own goal by Billy Dearden in the Man City match

Brilliant SB! I knew you'd have the facts at your fingertips, or on the "microfiche" that you stole from the central library ;)

I think it was my mate Mick, who first told me about Woody going in goal. Mick was maybe two or three years older than me and he was a keen Blade. I think it was probably him who had most influence on me going and watching the Blades in the first place. Although I went along as a neutral to my first few games. I'm sure I remember seeing Woody go in goal at least once though. From your list above I'd guess it would be a home match as I didn't travel to many away games in those days, so maybe the one v Man City.

Woody going in goal against Leeds was the one I remember best. He was brilliant that day and made some outstanding saves. This was against the Leeds team which was the outstanding team of the day. Am I right in thinking it was the game after we had sold Mick Jones to them & Mick Hill scored the winner?

It was 6 weeks after we had sold Jones. I read elsewhere that just after Hill headed in the only goal of the game, Blades fans were singing to L**ds fans "You bought the wrong Mick"

It's a shame in these days of sub keepers that this doesn't happen more often, but I spotted this news story from South America of River Plate having four keepers injured and having to play a midfielder in goal. They won, but I bet he wasn't as good as Jags.

Outfield player in goal trivia: David Hirst went in goal for the pigs against Man City on 1st January 1990 (and kept a clean sheet). That game was the last ever top flight match that didn’t have a TV camera present.

Wonder if Brewster can do a job in goal, seems pretty good at keeping the ball out of the net so far!?

I remember Kozzy making a superb goal-line save against Man Citeh in Warnock’s Prem season.

Given the circumstances I think he did alright:

Was it last game of the season at Bristol city and when it was only 1 substitute allowed and basset named a goalie just in case Tracey got injured to protect our goal difference to win promotion?

Two subs were allowed and Benstead was one of the subs named by Bassett at the Bristol City match
