I can think of another example of us losing to non-league opposition, other than Altrincham in the 1981-82 FA Cup. I was only eight, so can't remember anything about the home match, apart from that we drew 2-2 and were sat in the South Stand instead of being stood on the Kop, where we usually were.
I remember feeling embarrassed at losing 3-0 in the replay to a team I hadn't previously heard of. It wasn't a great start to life as a Blades fan, relegated to the fourth tier for the first time in our history in season one and losing to a non-league side in season two. Winning the fourth division in style made up for it though.
I have never accepted the 'devaluation' of the FA Cup, and don't want to be embarrassed once more in our first match ever against Barnet tomorrow!!

I may be wrong, but I think that Tottenham were a non league side when they beat us in the 1901 FA Cup Final.

I forgot that one! I guess that is another example of a unique failure by the Blades, there is another thread about this at the moment!

I was there for that altrincham replay. Awful stuff, don't remember seeing Jonny though.
I was there for the replay too. They had segregated the terrace by erecting a temporary wooden wall out of mdf. Got absolutely dicked by them. All in all a good season though.

Not sure what happened in the 2 games v Altrincham. We played some good stuff in the league that year and took Arsenal to extra time in the League Cup, after beating Newcastle 3-0 at the Lane.
Great season despite getting tonked by a part time outfit.

I also went to the Altrincham replay. We were totally outplayed and deserved nothing. I was at Chester PE college at the time so it wasn't too far.

Was the Newcastle game in the late 80s, I don't remember beating Newcastle 3-0 that season?

Just been to have a look online as I used to work with a bloke who was a keeper for Altrincham in the 80s. Looks like it was before his time.

Along with Yeovil, they were the big non-league giant killers of that era. I remember Altrincham winning at Birmingham City in the cup when Birmingham were in the top flight. I think that was the first time a non-league team had won at a top flight team.

Non league teams to beat us in the Cup:

Port Vale 1898
Spurs 1901 (in the final of course)
Swindon Town 1908
Darlington 1911
Altrincham 1982

This was more common before 1920 when the league had only 2 divisions.

Fun fact - Every team currently in the top 4 divisions has lost to a non league club in the Cup at some point, except one: West Ham.

Great fact! I'll be pedantic, have MK Dons ever lost to a non league side in the cup? :)

I went to both games in the Altringham defeat , we were poor at home when we drew 2-2 and dreadful at their place , we were outplayed and absolutely hammered 3-0. I was sat amongst their fans in the stand & they took the piss big time . it was most of the embarassing nights of my life , & to cap it all snowed all the way home!

I too was at the home game and can't recall anything of note about the game tbf. One thing that does stick in my mind is that wasn't Altrincham and Enfield always the top two in the then non league before promotion was allowed and didn't it go to a vote wether the winner of the division hot promoted or not ?

I was at that game at Altrincham, 3-0 defeat, probably my lowest point supporting the Blades, worse than relegation to the Fourth

Yes. Automatic promotion from the Alliance Premier League (subsequently the Conference) didn’t start until 1987. I think Warnock was the first manager to win automatic promotion, with Scarborough.

I was at that 0.3 defeat, shocking display by the team, we also played Aldershot away in the cup, night game but we only saw half the pitch all night due to dense fog. Lost anall, bad times.

I too was stood on that open end at Altrincham in the rain and sleet. It was the Stuart Houston show - how did he play for Man Utd??
Police kept us back after the game and then a drive over the Pennines in bad conditions with 3 ale-induced mates asleep in the car.
My worst ever away game

This is an interesting read as Altringcham was my first game at the lane age 10 .My dad wasn't interested in football so a kid of our street asked my mother if he could take me .He would have been 15 at the time .I was an arsenal fan up to that point .I've been a blade home and away ever since .Just glad it was him who stepped forward and not some pig ......you never know..

You must have been the only person who became a Blade for life because of that Altrincham game :)
