Our only defeat to non-league opposition - Altrincham?

What you have to remember is Altrincham were only a Division lower than us when we played them.
Barnet are 3 Divisions below us this has the potential to be the most embarrassing match in United's history.

If we don't progress past Barnet our match at Norwich will take place over that weekend.

I was there for the replay too. They had segregated the terrace by erecting a temporary wooden wall out of mdf. Got absolutely dicked by them. All in all a good season though.
We won the treble that season
Division 4 champions
Pennine radio cup(v Bradford City)
County cup (v pigs)

I can think of another example of us losing to non-league opposition, other than Altrincham in the 1981-82 FA Cup. I was only eight, so can't remember anything about the home match, apart from that we drew 2-2 and were sat in the South Stand instead of being stood on the Kop, where we usually were.
I remember feeling embarrassed at losing 3-0 in the replay to a team I hadn't previously heard of. It wasn't a great start to life as a Blades fan, relegated to the fourth tier for the first time in our history in season one and losing to a non-league side in season two. Winning the fourth division in style made up for it though.
I have never accepted the 'devaluation' of the FA Cup, and don't want to be embarrassed once more in our first match ever against Barnet tomorrow!!

So what is it then? You said you can think of another example?

Didn't go to the Alti replay but went to the home game, I'm sure we scored late on to take a 2-1 lead (sure Edwards scored it) then they equalised again in the last couple of minutes.

We were close to going out to Rushden & Diamonds in 1999 when we drew them out of the hat at home. They took us back to their place after a 1-1 draw, then we drew 1-1 down at nene park? only to scrape through on pens. Not sure of the score on pens.

Non league teams to beat us in the Cup:

Port Vale 1898
Spurs 1901 (in the final of course)
Swindon Town 1908
Darlington 1911
Altrincham 1982

This was more common before 1920 when the league had only 2 divisions.

Fun fact - Every team currently in the top 4 divisions has lost to a non league club in the Cup at some point, except one: West Ham.

It was also because a lot of southern teams still played in the Southern League, which was probably as strong as the Football League at the turn of the century. Our defeat to Spurs was not really such a big shock.

The fact that Spurs had already reached the cup final before they beat us in a replay 3-1 up at Burnden Park meant that they were probably a decent side anyway, and had probably beaten a few other league sides to get there.

A few other interesting snippets. When we drew 2-2 In the first game at the Crystal Palace stadium in London (the stadium being long since gone), there was a crowd of nearly 111,000 there. Surely the biggest attendance ever to watch United (though I know Wednesday regularly get this at the sty today)??

It was also the first fa cup game to be filmed by pathe news. You can see footage of the lads including Nudger and Fatty, if you search for it.

We lost the replay at Burnden Park at Bolton (now an Asda) which was also the scene of our earlier league 1 champions coronation in 1898.

I and my brothers went to Altrincham . Not only did we lose 3-0 but it could / should have been 6-0 . We were beyond dire. We made them look like an on song real Madrid side . We could not even manage a shot on goal in the pre match kick in

The attendance for the first game has been quoted as between 110,000 and 120,000 so possibly the largest crowd ever to watch the blades. Ironically there was about 20,000 at the replay due to the expensive prices being charged by Bolton. It became known as “Pie Saturday as the caterers were expecting a large crowd and had loads of pies leftover.

The following season we beat Southampton from the Southern League in the final in a replay just to prove how strong that league was at the time. In the saints lineup was C.B. Fry who also played test cricket for England, was a high jump champion and later a politician.

I think I'm right in thinking that CB Fry was the great uncle of Stephen Fry of Blackadder fame.

Add Barnet to Altrincham in our roll of shame.

The only time we lost to a non league team Altrincham we went on to WIN the league .......so here's hoping !!
