What about the save vs the pigs. He had just been crocked, was on the deck and managed to recoil and tip one over the bar that was destined for the top corner. Save of the season for me and, to counter your point, saved us the game.

To me, it seems a few are dissing Moore solely to elevate Blackman's standing (see what I did there?) when in reality he's probably of equal ability. Both are subject to blunders (as was Long funnily enough) so do we stick or twist the lot of them?

Completely agreed that was a fantastic save and did save us the points that day. Perhaps what I should have said is that more often than not he won't make the saves that win us the points.

The point I was trying to make in my post is that both keepers offer different things but on balance I don't think there is a huge gap between them, in the long run you'd back Blackman to eventually be the better keeper though so if there was a chance of a good bit of business then I'd be happy, but I don't want us to throw money at him just because. So in terms of stick or twist I'd stick with Moore unless the option came about to buy somebody better (or equal who will become better) for a good price.

I think Blackman's a top end Championship keeper already. At 24, and with around 80 senior appearances that's seriously impressive. Moore is a mediocre keeper, who rarely makes an outstanding save whilst rarely letting you down with a howler. I can only think of the pigs game and Coventry at home (that save from the free kick) where I thought he'd gained us points. I can think of many long range shots which I thought he might have saved them,or at least not palmed them back into the danger area for tap ins.Unless we have serious new investment we wont be signing Blackman permanently.I wasn't a Moore lover last year, but recognise that he was fairly solid, and the best we'd had in league one.

Goalkeeper is the least of our worries
Disagree. I think that we need to secure a keeper, as next season we will be down to Moore, Long and Eastwood. We need better, and if we fail to land Blackman on a perm, then we're fooked.

If I ever see him to talk to, i'll thank him for the save he pulled off near the end v. Wednesday. :)

I can't answer your first question but I suspect there will be some out there. What I can say is that, had we had Millwall's keeper in the recent match and they had had ours, we would have beat them at least 3 - 0.

I'm not saying it's more important than strengthening any other position but I think it definitely should not be overlooked.
On this one, I disagree with you. Don't think Jamal had a cat in hell's chance of saving the Millwall goal, as it was a long ball stroked in with the forward's first touch - no chance of setting himself to anticipate where it would go. And there was a match earlier this season (Leeds v Millwall, possibly) which was full of serious errors from the goalies, 2 of them absolute howlers from Archer. We have been served well by the keepers this year in my view.

If we couldn't get Blackman back I'd like Danny Ward (we would probably only be able to get him on loan). I also like the Dingle's keeper, Adam Davies.

Seriously, the goalie is where you start when building a team. Cloughie said so and he broke the bank to do it so that's good enough for me.

Not wanting to argue, and I would need to go back and check, but I think the late, great Brian Clough said that the defence was the first thing you built. Lads who would put their body on the line. The keeper is important, of course, but when a player has a one on one with the keeper, anything can happen, the trick is to stop that situation occurring, so you need a rock solid defence. In his own words, something like "...with a solid defence and a decent keeper, the worst possible result is 0-0...".

He went on to say you need an enforcer in the middle of the field (Dave Mackay for him), an absolute hard man, who doesn't take prisoners.

Anyway I would have to see if I still have his book, an absolutely outstanding read, and one of the few non-SUFC books I would ever take the time over.

Agree this position is a priority all current keepers are good
But all current keepers have failings. The No1 spot needs to be addressed for us to
Progress. Both current keepers have made fantastic saves and the next minute apalling mistakes

Millwall’s keeper made no saves in that game that Blackman wouldn’t have made.

OK, I'm signing off on this one but, before I do , I should say that I think Blackman has all the qualities needed to become a really top class keeper apart from the one which all the truly great ones have possessed, which was a fierce determination to keep the ball out of the net at all costs.

The likes of Shilton, Schmeicel, Seaman etc. almost took it as a personal insult to have a goal scored against them whereas this lad seems to subscribe to the philosophy of a number of modern goalkeepers, which is " as long as it looks as if it's not my fault, I'm ok with that ".

This is something which appears to have crept into the game in the last 5 years or so and every week, I am astonished by the number of goal keepers who just stand there as the ball goes past them, giving it the " nowt to do with me " look.

Did any of the above mentioned, or Hodgy, or Kelly ever do that. ?

Did they fuck.

Also, after seeing how he did against us Kiefer Moore at Barnsley would be a good requisition if it was possible. ....

So, if I’m not mistaken, ISJS, you are saying that you want a keeper that NEVER makes a mistake? While I agree it would be brilliant, it’s not realistic is it? I feel that Blackman, and Moore, have both served us well considering who we are and where we are. You can go to any keeper and find that they have made mistakes, errors or blunders. Put a better quality defence in front, a more robust midfield and a more effective strike force up top and the errors will become less as the keeper will have less to do.

I also don’t understand ISJS’s point.

Blackman is high Championship standard with plenty of potential to be PL standard
but I seems ISJS wants us to buy a tried and tested PL standard player, which we can’t afford.

For me Blackmans best quality where he is massively better than Moore is dealing with corners and crosses.
Blackman is imposing and catches crosses with ease, he’s so tall he doesn’t need to hardly jump.
Where as Moore is leaner and easier to knock off the ball, hence why he often punches crosses and corners.

I think Moore is no better than average CC level and feel that’s his ceiling whereas Blackman has potential to go further in the game.

Before the season started, I expressed reservations about Moore pointing out that he had at least three basic weaknesses . Whilst a few acknowledged this, the majority told me it was bollocks and that he was a fine keeper.

As the season has gone on, a number of those appear to have changed their minds although, to be fair to him, on the occasions he has appeared, I think that overall he has performed better than last year, albeit not without making some mistakes.

Many of those same members are now making out that Blackman is God's gift to goal keeping and that we must sign him at all costs, many of them being the same ones who were singing Moore's praises.

In my view, they've got it wrong again. Whilst in the early part of the season I was a big fan, as the season has progressed it has become clear to me that he too has basic weaknesses not least of which is a mystifyingly lackadaisical approach to certain situations.

Just two examples of this have occurred in the last two games, fnishing up on his arse having left the whole of the right hand side wide open for Birmingham's second goal and coming out too far and going down too slowly for Millwall's equaliser.

Both these were saveable and, had that been the case, we would now be in a very strong position to make the play offs.

Priorities for next season ? Let's start with the number 1 position

Said similar early on. I think Blackman has got better in terms of speeding up a bit and looking more confident. And his kicking is much better too. There’s no goalkeeper I’d rather have when the ball is in the air, he’s been superb in that situation. But he’s too easily beaten by low shots. Takes him ages to get down, and his positioning is suspect on too many occasions.

Still time for him to develop further but he could be improved on I think.

If we can find s better keeper whom the board sanction, then great!

I wasn't suggesting that we should or even could sign him.

I was merely using him as an example of a club much smaller than us having a better goal keeper than either Moore or Blackman . Whilst I can't name any, I suspect there will be others which might also include a second string from a larger club.

Either way, I' m sure the importance of a 3 goal swing in just one match, based purely on the standard of goal keeping , is not lost on you.

I'm just pointing out that if Archer isn't a realistic target, then using him (or a player like him) to compare to our keepers isn't really fair.

The only way we're going to get a player like Archer is by nurturing a youngster - something our fans aren't really patient enough for, in my opinion.

And are Milwall a smaller club than us?

...........and based on Youtube has made some howlers! No, for me, both Blackman and Moore are good enough for now and some would say so is Long based on his season so far and likely their player of the year.

Yes, i agree. I'm not suggesting we sign Archer

Moore is 6'3" so he's hardly a short-arse. I also fail to see how Moore could possibly be leaner than Blackman.

Dependant on budget I’d go for Smithies at QPR. Or if we have a mega budget Bentley from Brentford
Dependent on budget? They'd both cost very similar fee's.

Bialowski at Ipswich would be my choice, he's likely to be slightly cheaper than the other two.
