Before the season started, I expressed reservations about Moore pointing out that he had at least three basic weaknesses . Whilst a few acknowledged this, the majority told me it was bollocks and that he was a fine keeper.

As the season has gone on, a number of those appear to have changed their minds although, to be fair to him, on the occasions he has appeared, I think that overall he has performed better than last year, albeit not without making some mistakes.

Many of those same members are now making out that Blackman is God's gift to goal keeping and that we must sign him at all costs, many of them being the same ones who were singing Moore's praises.

In my view, they've got it wrong again. Whilst in the early part of the season I was a big fan, as the season has progressed it has become clear to me that he too has basic weaknesses not least of which is a mystifyingly lackadaisical approach to certain situations.

Just two examples of this have occurred in the last two games, fnishing up on his arse having left the whole of the right hand side wide open for Birmingham's second goal and coming out too far and going down too slowly for Millwall's equaliser.

Both these were saveable and, had that been the case, we would now be in a very strong position to make the play offs.

Priorities for next season ? Let's start with the number 1 position

Totally agree ISJS. THE most important position for me mate.

A good keeper settles the rest of the team and gives them the confidence that even against all odds they can get something from most games. I just don’t think that’s been the case with us for a while now, probably since the days of Ned and Tracey.

Blackman is a great keeper for his age. He will only get better. Moore is an OK keeper and hit his level.

Great ?

I think not, and age doesn't come into it. - he's either good enough or he's not.

And he's not.

So who do you realistically suggest we sign then? And how frequently have you seen th m play? Every keeper makes mistakes

A player’s level of ability & potential to improve are always relative to their age. The question are: is Blackman’s current skill set (another one for S24SU bullshit bingo) good enough for this level? Is he young enough to theoretically improve further?

Who would be your suggestion for an affordable replacement?

Do you think a new goalkeeper is more important than a new CB or ST?

Said this early in season about getting a top top keeper in. Would still sign Blackman though as I think he could become a top top keeper.

Seriously, the goalie is where you start when building a team. Cloughie said so and he broke the bank to do it so that's good enough for me.

I can't answer your first question but I suspect there will be some out there. What I can say is that, had we had Millwall's keeper in the recent match and they had had ours, we would have beat them at least 3 - 0.

I'm not saying it's more important than strengthening any other position but I think it definitely should not be overlooked.

Good points and to be honest, I'm getting a bit fed up of taking young players on loan who are still learning their trade and consequently, prone to errors.

I had quite enough of that with EEL and CCV.

Ooh, controversial!

Neither completely fills me with confidence, but then again no keeper has since Kelly (and I include Kenny).

There's no doubt that Blackman is an imposing figure and has made some stunning saves this season, but he's also made a number of errors and he just appears to be a bit too laconic. I think Moore has improved this season but he still makes the odd poor decision. I suppose the question is that if we don't see Moore as our No.1 and we don't go in for Blackman, who are we realistically going to get in that's a better keeper?

I hear Westwood might become available. His astronomical wage demands would be a problem...... :D:D:D

I think back to early Season, Jamal's kicks went higher rather than further :)

His deadball kicking wern't much better, and he has stopped jumping up in the air to collect balls chest high ... ala the QPR balls up

Vast improvement since he has been here, good teams cant have shit keepers, be nice to keep him on loan,

still with an option to make it permanent .... if ever we get the lolly

One of the things that has happened in recent years is that top quality goalkeepers have all gravitated towards the top clubs, whether it be first or second choice the top clubs like to have 2 quality goalkeepers. What that means is that decent goalkeepers now play in the Premier League for the next tier of clubs and half decent goalkeepers play for the lower Premier League clubs.

That leaves the dodgy keepers and the hidden gems for the rest of us. There are a lot of very average and slightly dodgy keepers out there and not a lot of hidden gems. We need to find a hidden gem.

I think it's fair to say that Blackman has improved drastically since the start of the season. But is he worth what would possibly be a hefty chunk of the little money we will have to spend?

For me, Moore is an average Championship keeper. He won't make huge mistakes but also won't pull off the wonder saves that win points for us (such as Villa and Millwall's keeper did against us). He's steady.
On the other hand Jamal is a fantastic asset in coming out for high balls and helps nullify the attack in this way, he's so good at it that Millwall specifically set a player at every dead ball situation whose sole purpose was to wrestle Jamal and stop him coming for anything. Jamal will probably save a little bit more than Moore would, and has fantastic reactions with shots that are head height, but he is also prone to lapses in concentration which cost goals.

If we could get Jamal at a reduced price and he was willing to cut his wages then I wouldn't complain at us signing him, but that's not likely to happen and I'd be disappointed if we broke the bank to get him just because he had a fan club here.

What about the save vs the pigs. He had just been crocked, was on the deck and managed to recoil and tip one over the bar that was destined for the top corner. Save of the season for me and, to counter your point, saved us the game.

To me, it seems a few are dissing Moore solely to elevate Blackman's standing (see what I did there?) when in reality he's probably of equal ability. Both are subject to blunders (as was Long funnily enough) so do we stick or twist the lot of them?

Unfortunately Milwall's keeper wouldn't be a realistic target, his transfer fee would likely exceed £3m and even if we had the money, I doubt he would re-locate for a lateral move .

They signed him on a free from Tottenham when he was 21, and have slowly nurtured him into the player he is now. Our fan's aren't patient enough - we apparently need the finished article all the time.

I wasn't suggesting that we should or even could sign him.

I was merely using him as an example of a club much smaller than us having a better goal keeper than either Moore or Blackman . Whilst I can't name any, I suspect there will be others which might also include a second string from a larger club.

Either way, I' m sure the importance of a 3 goal swing in just one match, based purely on the standard of goal keeping , is not lost on you.

Is Archer better than Blackman though? Or are you basing that on one game?
Because I assure you Jordan Archer has made some howlers this season.

Blackman hasn't made an error this big all season. Archer made 2 in one game.

A fair point about not wanting players learning on the job. Although I do think that sensible use of the loan system is vital for us, as it over comes the talent/cost problem, allowing us to get a quality of player that our budget couldn't fund the purchase of.

I wasn't aware of that and, in truth, I was judging his ability on that one match.

Not so with Blackman though who, whilst having made some excellent saves, is far too casual for my liking and seems to go 'missing in action ' too often.

Blackman is by far the best keeper in this division with the ball at his feet (can tell he's been at Chelsea since he was 13) and he makes saves quite frankly no other keeper in this division can.

He makes some errors, never too glaring (QPR apart but that was a serious freak incident) and could improve in some areas. But make no bones about it he's in the top 10 keepers in this division, quite comfortably IMO.

Archer also made two fuck ups last Friday night against Fulham.
He is a good keeper though, they all make mistakes.
Blackman has the potential to be a top class goalkeeper imo.
